February 7, 2016 Page 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) The call of Jesus Pastor’s Corner This week’s gospel speaks of Peter’s vocation. The miraculous catch of fish serves to prepare the apostles for what is coming. Christ manifests a superhuman power through this miracle, and Peter feels his nothingness before Him. Christ and His miracle instill in the apostles’ will the desire and the intention to follow Him and His call. Peter and the apostles trust in Christ, have faith in Him and follow Him. Christ’s call is a personal one that changes completely the existence, the very life of the ones called. Let us ask Christ, and God our Father, that we may answer every call, every inspiration arising in us that will contribute to better the world and to lead souls to God. Fr. Federico February 7, 2016 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Lecturas de la semana Sunday Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11 or 15:3 -8, 11; Lk 5:1-11 Monday Saint Jerome Emiliani; Saint Josephine Bakhita, Virgin 1 Kgs 8:1-7, 9-13; Ps 132:6-7, 8-10; Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday 1 Kgs 8:22-23, 27-30; Ps 84:3, 4, 5, and 10, 11; Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday Ash Wednesday Jl 2:12-18; Ps 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 12-13, 14, and 17; 2 Cor 5:20—6:2; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Thursday Our Lady of Lourdes Dt 30:15-20; Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6; Lk 9:22-25 Friday Is 58:1-9a; Ps 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 18-19; Mt 9:14-15 Saturday Is 58:9b-14; Ps 86:1-2, 3-4, 56; Lk 5:27-32 P.S. Warm congratulations to the St. Hugh-Steinway Concerts committee for the outstanding concert presented by tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz on February 5. Meets 2nd Thursday of every month 7:30 pm 7th Grade Room Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 The Jubilee of Mercy /El Jubileo de la Misericordia With our eyes fixed on Jesus and his merciful gaze, we experience the love of the Most Holy Trinity. The mission Jesus received from the Father was that of revealing the mystery of divine love in its fullness. “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8,16), John affirms for the first and only time in all of Holy Scripture. This love has now been made visible and tangible in Jesus’ entire life. His person is nothing but love, a love given gratuitously. The relationships he forms with the people who approach him manifest something entirely unique and unrepeatable. The signs he works, especially in favor of sinners, the poor, the marginalized, the sick, and the suffering, are all meant to teach mercy. Everything in him speaks of mercy. Nothing in him is devoid of compassion. REPORT FROM OUR MINISTRIES Grove for Ghana SACRIFICIAL GIVING COLLECTION LAST WEEK Colecta de la semana pasada $19,493.26 Thanks to your generous support and our most enjoyable annual dinner in October, Grove for Ghana begins the new year with $37,000 in the bank. We have received a request from the Diocese of Goaso, Ghana, for 7 new wells at this time. Six of them are mechanized and cost $6,118 each. The other is solar powered and costs $13,105. We have agreed to send $30,000+ now to provide for the six wells. Perhaps there is someone with extra money and a giving heart who would like to underwrite the solar well and have it dedicated as you wish? We hope to have another event in the first half of this year. We appreciate your support, and obviously could not further this life-giving work without you. If you would like to join us in this ministry, call Bob Dudley 305 962-3651. Understanding the structure of DNA is essential for understanding the concepts of replication and transcription. Making a model of DNA is a great way to learn about how this magnificent structure builds our genes. The 7th grade students of Saint Hugh built edible models of DNA while learning basic DNA structure and the rules of base pairing. One group also used crayons. It was an excellent and delicious way to learn about DNA. Page 10 St. Hugh iPads FOR THE LOWER GRADES Father Federico and Mrs. Fernandez recognize the educational need that our primary students have in working on the latest technology. Consequently, Father Federico agreed to acquire 45 new iPads for use by the primary students to add to our already mobile iPad cart. It has been a great addition and learning tool in the classrooms.
