Family Gram *** ***Cameron Events for fall and Quarter I
*** Family Gram *** Dear Families, We are very excited for the great learning opportunities in Fairfax County Public Schools, for our teachers, students and families. Since school began our teachers have learned about: Professional Learning Communities, Balanced Literacy Eric Jensen Teaching with Poverty in mind, 21st century Learning and Application All our learning impacts what we can offer to your child. I always compare this to going to the dentist. We want to go to the best trained dentist because it is less painful, so is learning under the best trained educator. Thank you for your support as we learn together to make the education for Cameron children the highest quality it can be. Be well, Jeannie McCurry ***Cameron Events for fall and Quarter I*** Please note that dates may change throughout the school year. Children who learn to listen eventually learn to read, and literacy skills provide the basis for a lifetime of learning. If children hear words for two minutes daily, they will have heard 180,000 words a year, and with five minutes that becomes over 350,000 words in a year. Reading aloud to your child will: • Improving listening comprehension • Increasing vocabulary • Providing fluency models • Promoting conceptual understanding • Lengthening attention spans • Creating a positive attitude toward books and reading This week we ask that you take some time and read a book aloud with your child(ren). We will also have special guests on our morning news show; include cluster superintendent Dr. Ivy, to read a book aloud to the school. If you need guidance in choosing a book, click on the link below and it will take you to Scholastic booklists organized by age. http://www.scholastic.com/parents/books-and-reading/book-lists-andrecommendations/ages-3-5 ***Advanced Academic Programs Parent Conference: *** Advanced Academic Programs Parent Conference: A Partnership for Excellence Saturday, October 26, 2013 West Springfield High School 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Flier: Arabic | Chinese | English | Farsi | Korean | Spanish | Urdu | Vietnamese The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Parent Conference will provide a comprehensive overview of K-12 Advanced Academic opportunities. To help your child maximize his math skills: Make sure your child knows math vocabulary. Have him define new terms or use examples to demonstrate understanding. Encourage neat writing. Many math errors are due to sloppy number writing. Have your child trace over numbers to practice writing them. Or suggest he use graph paper to keep numbers aligned neatly. Drill basic math facts. Use flash cards until your child can answer in fewer than three seconds. Teach your child to read word problems several times. Have him draw a picture or diagram to help him understand. Help your child master one concept before moving on to the next. Ask the teacher what you can do. Help your child review examples in his textbook and worksheets. Have him redo the examples before tackling the assignment. Make learning math fun. Play games like Yahtzee, dominoes and Monopoly that require math. ***Literacy Night at Cameron ES is Coming Soon!!!*** Dear Parents and Guardians, Please help us to make this night as meaningful for you as possible. The black goat is named Big Momma, the black goat with the white spot is named Toby, and the tan goat is named Snowball. The small black and tan rabbit is named Shy Shy, the big black and brown rabbit is named Hoppity and the large gray rabbit is named Snowy.
