We continue to be proud of the progress by each of our students. They are
showing this progress on daily exit slips, formative classroom assessments, our
internal benchmarking system, and through our blended learning ST Math
program. We are looking forward to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness
for College and Careers (PARCC) tests that our grade three and four students
will take during the month of May. This standardized state assessment replaced
the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) for all Lawrence
Public School students.*
In addition, many of our classrooms have begun taking field trips to expand their
background knowledge and provide enriching experiences. Please be on the
lookout for permission slips that will be coming home soon! We also are excited
to announce that on Tuesday, June 14 CDAES will be hosting our field day at
Howard Playstead Park (intersection of Lawrence Street and Hampshire Street).

Seguimos estando orgullosos del progreso de cada uno de nuestros estudiantes.
Ellos están mostrando este progreso en pruebas de salidas diarias, evaluaciones en
el aula de formación, nuestro sistema de marca de progreso interno, y através de
nuestro programa de aprendizaje mixto ST Math. Estamos mirando adelante a las
pruebas Asociación para la Evaluación de la Preparación de Colegio y Carreras
(PARCC) que realizaran nuestros estudinates de tercer y cuarto grado durante el

This fun-filled day will be for all CDAES
students (K-4). More information,
including permission slips, will be sent
home shortly.
In closing, we wanted to thank all families,
students, and staff that participated in our
most recent Parent Advisory Board
(PAB) event – 2nd Annual CDAES
Cultural Night that was held on Thursday,
April 28. Our last remaining event is an
Art Auction and Ice Cream Social that
will be held in our cafeteria on Thursday,
May 26.
We look forward to closing out the
school year on a strong note, and
beginning to plan for enriching summer
programming at CDAES!

From the Directors of
Curriculum and Instruction...
The second term continued to be
eventful in the K-1 Academy. The
vocabulary parade on April 15 was a huge
success with our students learning
multiple new “juicy” words. Poem in your
Pocket Day was held on April 29; this fun
event encouraged students to read and
write their own poems.
Our kindergarteners have continued to
work on reading patterned texts using
their reading strategies. In addition, the
kindergarteners learned about man-made
vs. natural items. The grade 1 students
are learning to infer about character’s
traits and their motivations. Grade 1 also
learned about adding two-digit numbers
using multiple strategies. Grade 1 has an
upcoming field trip to the Franklin Park
Zoo on Thursday, May 19.
The remainder of the school year is going
to be busy!

It’s been an eventful spring so far in
second grade at CDAES! We had a
number of fun events recently that were
exciting for both students and teachers
alike. On the Friday before Spring Break,
students wore costumes of tricky words
CDAES students went all out for the vocabulary parade
as part of the CDAES vocabulary parade.
On the last Friday in April, we celebrated
Poem in Your Pocket Day in which
everyone kept a poem in their pocket
and were randomly asked to stop and
read it during the school day. Some of
our students also went on field trips to
Quarrybrook, the Discovery Museum in
Acton, and to Harvard University. As
part of their created cities, each
classroom wrote and voted on a winning
city constitution containing laws for their
community.
In the classroom, students are working
hard on our spring math units. These
included telling time, where they are
learning time to five minute intervals as
well as half past, quarter to and quarter
past. They learned to identify, add and
subtract coins in our money unit. In our
geometry unit, students learned to
identify two-dimension and threedimension shapes as well as their
properties.
In writing, students are working on a
poetry unit and they have learned to
write autobiographical poems, cinquain
poems and haikus. In ELA, we are just
beginning our fables unit. Students are
learning the components of a fable and
how to use text evidence to find their
meanings.
It's been a fun and productive spring in
second grade!

CDA Announces New Coprincipals for 2016-2017
Sheila Balboni and Brent Merten are pleased to announce that
Tiffany Goddard and Ryan Werb will assume the position of
coprincipals at Community Day Arlington for the 2016-2017
school year. Ryan has been with the school in various teaching
and administrative positions since 2013. Prior to his
employment at CDA, he held positions as an instructional
coach, school operations director and teacher. Ryan has an
impressive record of service with Teach for America and
holds degrees from both Northwestern University and
Harvard. Tiffany has been with CDA since 2013 as the Head
of School for Kindergarten and First Grade. Prior to that,
Tiffany taught for seven years in the Community Day Charter
network where she was a leader in the development of its
literacy program for young children. Tiffany is engaged in a
doctoral program at Boston University. She has an advanced
degree from Salem State University and is a graduate of Saint Michael’s College in
Vermont. At a recent meeting announcing their new positions, both Tiffany and Ryan
expressed their pride at assuming the leadership of a school with such dedicated and
outstanding teachers.

Instruccion...
El segundo término continuó siendo
ocupado en la Academia K-1. El desfile de
vocabulario el 15 de abril fue un gran
éxito con nuestros estudiantes
aprendendiendo varias palabras “jugosas"
nuevas. El Día de Poema en el bolsillo se
llevó a cabo el 29 de abril; este divertido
evento animó a los estudiantes a leer y
escribir sus propios poemas.
Nuestros niños de kinder han seguido
trabajando en la lectura de textos con
dibujos utilizando sus estrategias de
lectura. Además, los niños de kinder
aprendieron sobre cosas hechas por el
hombre y cosas hechas por la naturaleza.
Los estudiantes de grado 1 están
aprendiendo a inferir sobre los rasgos de
los personajes y sus motivaciones. Grado
1 también aprendió acerca de cómo
sumar números de dos dígitos utilizando
múltiples estrategias. Grado 1 tiene una
próxima excursión al zoológico Franklin
Park el jueves 19 de mayo.

Los estudiantes de CDAES sobresalieron para la parade de vocabulario
Ha sido una primavera llena de
acontecimientos hasta ahora en segundo
grado en CDAES! Tuvimos una serie de
eventos de diversión recientemente que
furon emocionante para los estudiantes y
profesores. El viernes antes de las
vacaciones de primavera, los estudiantes
llevaban trajes de palabras difíciles, como
parte del desfile vocabulario de CDAES.
En el último viernes de abril, celebramos
el Dia de Poema en el bolsillo en el que

fueron en viajes de campo a

cada aula escribió y voto por una
constitución de ciudad ganadora que
contiene leyes para su comunidad.

third grade in the annual Talent Show –
this promises to be a huge success with
lots of fun had by all as it is every year!
Finally, we are in the process of planning
our fourth grade graduation ceremony
for the last day of school. We look
forward to celebrating our fourth graders
and sending them off to middle school in
style!

Local Spring Events
CDAES students celebrate another successful model student assembly.
In preparation for the upcoming PARCC
tests, students in third and fourth grades
are having PARCC Pep Rallies! During
these pep rallies, each classroom will
perform chants, cheers, songs, skits and/
or speeches to motivate all students to
try their best on the PARCC tests.
Students are putting on their creative
thinking caps in preparing for these pep
rallies and we can’t wait to see their final
presentations! Please talk to your child
about the importance of trying their best
on these tests, and make sure students
are going to bed early throughout the
month of May to ensure that they are
rested and ready. We appreciate your
support!
After PARCC testing is complete, the
fourth grade is taking a field trip to the
Lowell National Historical Park, and the
third grade will visit the Sea Coast
Science Center. We also are looking

original Mashup called The Uptown Force

Parents as Partners
Parent participation and involvement have
greatly contributed to the success of our
school. All CDAES families are invited to
participate in our parent board and
events at the school. Please get involved!
Parent Advisory Board (PAB)
The PAB meets regularly, giving parents
the opportunity to plan programs that
encourage parental involvement in the
school. Areas addressed in meetings
range from curriculum and academic
issues to fundraising events that provide
support to school programs.

Anual que presentara el cuarto grado
para los estudiantes de tercer grado - que

En preparación para las proximas pruebas
