The message of prayer, penance, sacrifice, and fasting does not always fill your heart with joy and excitement. Lent is hard work. It forces us to look at the parts of our lives that we would rather not look at and to struggle with the faults and failings which we ignore during the year. However, there is another side to Lent, a joyful side filled with hope. The first preface for Lent calls it “a gracious gift” from God. Indeed, it is a gift. Lent is our loving God inviting us into a deeper relationship, giving us another chance to save ourselves from our self-destructiveness, calling us to be renewed and become the persons God created us to be. That same preface tells us that during the Lenten season we await the celebration of Easter “with the joy of minds and hearts renewed”. Personal renewal requires discipline and hard work but it also means feeling the joy of finally overcoming our selfish and destructive habits by the grace of God. A mind and a heart renewed mean no longer feeling hopeless and unable to move forward in your life. The preface then tells us that the journey of renewal begins when we become “more eagerly intent on prayer and on works of charity.” In the end, it is not our strength but God’s grace and power that renew us. To be intent on prayer means knowing that left alone we are powerless but with God all things become possible. Works of charity remind us to share with others the blessings God has given to us. In the end, the Lenten journey always leads us beyond ourselves and our personal needs ; a truly spiritual journey will always make us sensitive to the needs of others. May these weeks of Lent truly be for you a gracious gift from God.
