July 24, 2016 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (C) Gn 18:20–32 / Col 2:12–14 / Lk 11:1–13 I tell my students there are five prayers: please; thank you; I’m sorry; wow; and yes, I will. The words change but, in essence, every prayer implies one or more of these attitudes: petition, thanksgiving, contrition, praise, and obedience. In his book Man’s Quest for God, Abraham Joshua Heschel says prayer is “the invitation to God to intervene in our lives.” God does—sometimes to our surprise, sometimes in ways we can’t imagine, but always in a way that changes us. Jesus knew this when he taught his disciples the Our Father. In it, we hear words of praise and petition. We hear contrition: “Forgive us…as we forgive…” (11:4). We hear obedience: “thy kingdom come…” and “thy will be done…” (Luke 11:2; Matthew 6:10). Jesus goes on to say that when we pray, God will send his Spirit to guide us and give us what we need: “our daily bread…” (11:3). No wonder the Lord’s Prayer is a model prayer for everyone. In our prayer, we have to remember that there is often a difference between what we need and what we desire. In the movie Shadowlands, C.S. Lewis is depicted reflecting on the nature of prayer as his wife is dying. Asked why he prayed, he responds, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God; it changes me.” That’s the power of the Spirit—to change our hearts until all our prayers become wow (praise) and yes (obedience). JULY 24, 2016 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ADULT FAITH FORMATION: A CONTINUING CATECHESIS A Summarized Presentation of the Catholic Faith—Based on the Paulist Tradition By Merci J. Reynales Christ Reveals to us the Father, the Spirit, and Himself Focus QuesƟons: What did Jesus tell us God like? Can we be sure that Jesus Christ is divine and that His teaching is God’s own? Jesus revealed that that he is the divine Son of God. This revelation unfolds in the gospels. He calls the Father by the intimate term, “Abba” (Mark 14:36). He says that he is so close to his Father that he alone knows as in Matthew 11: 27: “All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” . The infancy stories show that Jesus’ origin was with God. At the start of his public preaching , after he was baptized , “…heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, ‘Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased ‘” ( Luke 3: 21-22). And in his last prayer, before his death, Jesus summed up his work as the Son of the Father (Refer to John 17: 1-5). Jesus showed that he was more than human by his evident holiness, wisdom, and miraculous deeds. People during Jesus’ time were saying: “Never has man spoken as this man “(John 7: 46), and “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:40). Then one day he made the bold claim: “Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he was to see my day. He saw it and was glad.” The Jews therefore said to him, “Thou are not fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I am.” (John 8: 56- 59). In the above passage John tells us that Jesus is claiming the sacred name of God, “I am”. To his hearers this was blasphemy: “He claimed to forgive sins but God only? “(Luke 5; 21). On another occasion he said openly, “My Father and I are one” (John10:33). Jesus’ oneness with the Father indeed made Jesus filled with perfect wisdom and holiness. Our oneness with Jesus (may) lead to loving Father God’s giving us wisdom and sanctification, too. JULY 24, 2016 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jubilee Year of Mercy July 24, 2016 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time World Youth Day in Krakow: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” This week, the universal Church focuses in prayerful solidarity on World Youth Day in Krakow, where WYD’s founder, Saint John Paul II, served as archbishop. Its theme coincides with that of Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Today’s Gospel echoes the same theme, as Jesus unites prayer with mercy in “The parable of the persistent friend.” Jesus teaches us not only what words to pray, but what deeds must match authentic prayer. How beautifully down-to-earth is Jesus’ portrait of a God who can be trusted to do what is best for us. A pesky neighbor disturbs a sleeping friend and disrupts the household. Yet beautiful images unfold. Persevering prayer receives active, practical mercy in loaves of bread, recalling Luke’s unique expression for the Eucharist, “the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:35; Acts 2:42). WYD, the Jubilee, and Jesus thus unite to define perfect prayer as persevering communion with God and unconditional mercy toward our neighbor. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WORKS OF MERCY Please practice during the month of July the following Works of Mercy: SPIRITUAL: INSTRUCT THE IGNORANT. Share your advice and experience, gently. CORPORAL: CLOTHE THE NAKED. Stand up for those who are most weak and vulnerable. DID YOU KNOW? Parents should be wary of online solicitation A study on online victimization found that approximately one in five children receive sexual solicitation from a stranger over the internet. Given today’s reliance on online contact, imagine how much that number has grown over the last several years. Children who use the internet cannot be totally safe from dangers, because the internet is open to all, but parents should monitor activity and sites visited to ensure that their kids aren’t being contacted by predators. Talk to your child about internet safety and appropriate vs. inappropriate communication.
