We are a group of professionals who are
mostly affiliated to the Department of Health
of Alicante-Hospital General, and interested in
the study and treatment of pain with the objective of improving the quality of life of those who
suffer it. We are firmly committed to individuals
experiencing pain and their families.
We support actions that promote the use
of scientifically validated treatments, generally
known as evidence-based medicine, and strive
to contribute to the identification and comparison of techniques and strategies helping
improve the quality of life of individuals with
chronic pain.
OBJECTIVES
The pain physiopathology and treatment research group was
born in 2011, coinciding with the incorporation of the group
coordinator (Dr Ana Peiró) to the Pain Unit of the Department
of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation. The unit consists of
basic and clinical researchers interested in the study of the
physiopathology, neuropharmacology and treatment of pain
from both clinical and preclinical perspectives. The group has a
dedicated space in the experimental laboratory of the Research
Unit and carries out investigations at the cellular and molecular
levels.
At the experimental laboratory, basic researchers (biologists
and pharmacists) and clinical researchers (pharmaceutical
physicians and anaesthesiologists) work together, contributing
their diverse knowledge and experience to the resolution of
proposed problems.
The information contributed by our studies is needed to
understand the cellular basis of higher functions of the brain.
This provides the foundation for the correct understanding of its
normal and pathological functioning in the context of medicine
and pain management with the ultimate goal of improving
quality of life in patients living with pain.
