¿En qué parte de Ecuador creciste?
In what part of Ecuador did you grow up?
Yo crecí en un pueblo muy pequeño que se llama Santa Ana.
Tendría unos cinco mil habitantes. Me acuerdo haber crecido
en una sociedad donde no existían los avances que tenemos en
la actualidad. Para mí eso no importaba, era la mejor vida que
yo tenía, libertad en todo, crecimos con puertas abiertas, nadie
cerraba las puertas de sus casas, de sus hogares y pasábamos
muy bien. Vivíamos muy bien con todos mis amigos, teníamos
la misma edad y teníamos aventuras muy bonitas que empezó
a hacer de mi vida una cosa bien alegre.
I grew up in a small town called Santa Ana. It had, more or less,
five thousand people. I remember growing up in a society where
there were no technological advances like we have today. For
me, that did not matter, it was the best life I had, with complete
freedom. We grew up with open doors, no one ever locked the
doors of their houses, and life was wonderful. I lived very well
surrounded by all my friends. We were the same age and we
had very nice adventures which made my early life very happy.
Cuando eras niño, ¿tenías alguna idea de cómo eran los
Estados Unidos?
Como niño yo nunca tuve la idea de lo que eran los Estados
Unidos porque en mi infancia y en mi juventud lo único que me
preocupaba a mí era jugar al soccer. Desde las 7 de la mañana
y llegaba a la casa a las 7 de la noche y así era día tras día.
Ya tiene casi cuarenta años aquí viviendo en los Estados Unidos.
¿Nunca en este tiempo tuvo ganas de regresar al Ecuador?
Es increíble que yo le diga, si me oye mi hermano en Ecuador
me llama antipatriota, pero nunca he pensado de regresar al
Ecuador. Allá no existen las oportunidades que hay aquí. Nunca
se me ha venido en mi mente eso de decir que quisiera ir al
Ecuador. Yo quisiera tal vez, pero tal vez no pueda hacerlo
porque tú sabes con mi problema de corazón, pero yo quisiera
ir de visita, tres o cuatro días, eso no más. Yo no quiero estar
más tiempo. Allá existe tanto problema económico, político,
social, es increíble. Aquí tenemos actualmente problemas
pero los estamos solventando poco a poco y con cuidado.
When you were a kid, did you have any idea about how the
United States was like?
As a child I never thought about the United States because in
my childhood and my youth the only thing that worried me was
playing soccer. From 7 in the morning until I came back home
at 7 in the evening, I did this every day.
You have lived here, in the United States, for almost forty years.
Never, during that time, did you want to return to Ecuador?
It’s incredible, I tell you, if my brother in Ecuador hears me,
he’ll call me unpatriotic, but I have never thought of returning
to Ecuador. There we do not have the same opportunities as
we have here. It never crossed my mind to go back to Ecuador.
Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t do it because of my heart condition.
I would like to visit for three or four days, no more. I wouldn’t
want to stay longer. There are so many economic, political, and
social problems in Ecuador, it is incredible. Here we also have
problems but we are solving them little by little.
