Document Summary
This document is an inventory of the most relevant Spanish language HIV/AIDS resources and
information available online in the U.S. A survey of the most important websites containing
information related to the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS was conducted to identify these
resources. This inventory will serve as a principal source of content for the Puente Binacional de
Salud PIMSA Project’s new website.
The Puente Binacional de Salud’s website will serve as a one-stop-hub for American and Mexican
based medical service providers, HIV and AIDS transnational patients, and the general public,
facilitating the treatment and prevention of HIV and AIDS in these two neighboring countries.
Government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, and educational
and health institutes across the United States provide an abundance of online Spanish language
information and resources related to the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS. However, this
information tends to be scattered across multiple websites. There is no single website that
comprehensively compiles all the relevant resources available today. Although this is
understandable given the differing missions of these organizations, and the vast and nuanced
information available, more can be done to consolidate this information for the public online. This
inventory can provide the basis to facilitate the creation of a comprehensive online centralized hub
for Spanish language HIV/AIDS resources in the U.S.
It should be noted that not all the Spanish language information and resources found in the survey
is included in this report, and not everything that is included is all the relevant information
available. Given the difficulty to navigate certain websites, and the online universe, it is very
possible that important resources were not located and therefore not included in this report. Yet,
this inventory should provide an accurate depiction of the information and resources available
today in Spanish relating to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and Latinos and HIV/AIDS in the
U.S.
The following table of contents lists all the online sources that were surveyed in alphabetical order.
For each organization surveyed, a brief description of the organization is given followed by the list
of HIV/AIDS resources and information it provides in Spanish. Some of the organizations surveyed
did not retrieve any information in Spanish, yet they are listed for reference. The Pew Hispanic
Center is the only organization that was included which does not provide any information about
HIV/AIDS but rather demographic information about Latinos in the U.S.
The inventory is divided in three sections: (1) Basic information; (2) Directory of medical services;
and (3) Websites that provide information about services in major cities in the U.S. and Mexico.
Because some of the websites surveyed included information pertaining to more than one section,
they are repeated respectively.

SECTION I
BASIC INFORMATION
Adolescent AIDS Program
Based in the Bronx, New York, the Adolescent AIDS Program at the Children's Hospital at
Montefiore Medical Center is a leader in the field of HIV/AIDS among adolescents. The AAP serves
as a local and national resource for those living with HIV/AIDS; adolescents who are at-risk for HIV
infection; healthcare providers who treat adolescents living with or at-risk for HIV infection; and
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning adolescents, their families and caregivers.
The Adolescent AIDS program website does not have any information in Spanish. The site provides
basic information about HIV/AIDS and youth, and it mainly provides a list of resources nationwide.
The AIDS Education and Training Centers - AETC
The AIDS Education and Training Centers conduct targeted, multidisciplinary education and
training programs for health care providers treating persons living with HIV/AIDS. This website
provides a central repository for AETC program and contact information and for training materials
developed within the AETC network.
AETC’s website is very comprehensive. It retrieves vast information in Spanish from the major
HIV/AIDS resources. Also, this website features resources from the U.S.-Mexico Border AETC
Steering Team (UMBAST) and its Federal Training Center partners. Together they offer free, expert
training, technical assistance, and capacity-building programs on the prevention and treatment of
HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis C, sexually transmitted diseases, reproductive health, and related
topics for clinicians working in the U.S.-Mexico border region.

region. Includes treatment, testing, and training resources. Available in print and online.
Crossing the Border: Continuity of Care for HIV-Infected Patients Returning to Mexico
53 slide set with talking points. Outlines the health care system in Mexico, the Mexican response
to the AIDS epidemic, and practical steps that U.S. providers can take to help HIV-infected
patients returning to Mexico.
Information for Providers Assisting HIV Patients Returning to Mexico and Central America.
These fact sheets were developed to assist providers who have patients leaving the United States
for Mexico and Central American countries. The goal of the information is to improve continuity of
care for migrant patients with HIV. Fact sheets are now available for Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (PFD fact sheet and online), Nicaragua, and Panama - in both English

and Spanish (each file has both languages).

countries of origin are assisted in linking to HIV clinical care.
AIDS.gov
AIDS.Gov provides HIV/AIDS information from the Federal government about prevention, testing,
treatment, research, and using new media in response to HIV/AIDS. It works to increase HIV testing
and care among people most at-risk for, or living with, HIV, by using emerging communication
strategies to provide access to Federal HIV information, policies (e.g. the National HIV/AIDS
Strategy), programs, and resources.
AIDS.gov has a link titled “Recursos en Español” which provides a page with the main national
(federal) HIV/AIDS resources with information in Spanish such as the CDC, HIVtest.org, InfoSIDA,
womenshealth.org, healthfinder.gov, Office of Minority Health, NLAAD, NIDA, Latino AIDS, and
others.
The “Recursos en Español” page also provides a list of non-federal resources available in Spanish
that includes informational sheets about the ABC of HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS among Latinos in the U.S.,
anatomical information about the human body, and other basic relevant medical information.
The page also contains information about the National HIV/AIDS Strategy in Spanish.

The AIDS Institute
The AIDS institute is a national non-profit organization that promotes action for social change
through public policy research, advocacy and education. Its website does not have information
about HIV/AIDS in Spanish. The website has information available in English and provides HIV/AIDS
research, capacity building, education, and policy (state, national and global) resources.

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research
Founded in 1985, amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative
research. amfAR’s website offers several resources and reports in Spanish about HIV/AIDS in
general, HIV/AIDS and in the Latino community in the U.S., and/or in Latin America:

Blog.AIDS.Gov serves as a forum to foster public discussion on using new media effectively in
response to HIV/AIDS, as well as HIV/AIDS research and policies. The intended audiences for the
blog include, but are not limited to:
• Individuals and organizations using, or wanting to use, new media tools in the response to
HIV/AIDS, including minority public health leaders;
• Members of the public and Federal staffers who would like to see the Federal government
adopt emerging technologies, when appropriate, to improve information delivery and services
Public health professionals, healthcare providers, and consumers looking for Federal HIV policy
and research news.
Along with weekly new media posts, the blog features other AIDS.gov-authored posts, guest
posts, cross-posts from the White House Office of National AIDS Policy blog and the CDC Health

Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID) Division of AIDS. More specifically, the blog’s content areas aim to:
• Introduce and explain new media tools in the context of their use in response to HIV

highlights from key conferences
• Provide information about Federal HIV policy and research news

The Body: The Complete HIV/AIDS Resource
The Body: The Complete HIV/AIDS Resource has a page entitled VIH/SIDA Centro de Recursos Para
Latinos that provides information about HIV infection and prevention, treatment, pregnancy and
other general themes related to the disease.
The site also offers special reports such as:
HIV/AIDS and Latinas: What's Gender Got to Do With It?
A report about an exclusive roundtable discussion about how gender inequality make Latinas
vulnerable to contracting HIV, prevention obstacles and how language can serve as a barrier to
treatment and information.
The Rising Rates of HIV Among Black and Latino Men: What's Going On?
A report about an exclusive roundtable discussion about what is being done right, what is going
terribly wrong and what is being overlooked in terms of HIV/AIDS prevention, education,
treatment and testing for MSM.
This website also presents a list of profiles entitled Movers and Shakers: HIV/AIDS Advocates in
the Latino Community.
Whether they're running clinics, spreading the word in Congress, providing HIV education to
underserved gay men or devising the best way to approach the language barrier issue, these
individuals are part of the driving force behind efforts to end the HIV epidemic in Latino
communities.

California Department of Public Health – Office of AIDS (OA)
The OA has lead responsibility for coordinating state programs, services, and activities relating to
HIV/AIDS. OA's mission is to:
Assess, prevent, and interrupt the transmission of HIV and provide for the needs of infected
Californians by identifying the scope and extent of HIV infection and the needs which it creates,
and by disseminating timely and complete information; Assure high-quality preventive, early
intervention, and care services that are appropriate, accessible, and cost effective; Promote the
effective use of available resources through research, planning, coordination, and evaluation; and
Provide leadership through a collaborative process of policy and program development,
implementation and evaluation.
The OA page is available only in English. However the California Department of Public Health has a
section/tab in its main page entitled “Su Salud en Su Idioma” which provides information about
general health topics in Spanish. By searching the site one can find some documents about

Affordable Care Act – Health Care Reform
There is no direct information in Spanish in www.healthcare.gov - There currently is an En Español
tab but it does not retrieve anything.
However, the site www.CuidadodeSalud.Gov published by the HHS in partnership with
HealthCare.gov provides information about HIV/AIDS in Spanish. Background of site: Consistent
with the mandate in the Affordable Care Act, CuidadodeSalud.gov is the partner site of
HealthCare.gov, which was launched in July 2010, and is the first website in Spanish to provide
consumers with both public and private health coverage options tailored specifically for their needs
in a single, easy-to-use tool. The website is a one-stop-shop for information about the
implementation of the Affordable Care Act as well as other health care resources. The website
connects consumers to quality rankings for local health care providers as well as preventive services.
At HealthCare.gov there are also reports and information pieces that touch on the issue of HIV/AIDS

U.S Department of Health and Human Services - HHS
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the United States government’s principal
agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services,
especially for those who are least able to help themselves.
HHS provides HIV/AIDS information in Spanish thought different sites it sponsors such as
MEDICINEPLUS, and HEALTHFINDER.GOV – both sites entirely available in Spanish. HHS also
provides valuable HIV/AIDS information through its Office of Minority Health. HHS also has some
valuable information about civil rights in Spanish, though its Office of Civil Rights.
MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and
friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, it brings you information about diseases,
conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand.
HealthFinder.gov has easy-to-understand information and tools to help people stay healthy. The
site provides reliable information on diseases and conditions from over 1,600 government and
on-profit organizations. The site also has a Quick Guide to Healthy Living that shows its users how
to get on the right track to being healthy by explaining in plain language what screenings and
tests you need and how to stay healthy. The site also has Health Topics information in
alphabetical order, personal health tools, and provides help in locating a doctor, health center, or
public library.
Other useful information at HHS website include a link to www.CuidadodeSalud.Gov Partner site
of HealthCare.gov. Consistent with the mandate in the Affordable Care Act, CuidadodeSalud.gov
is the partner site of HealthCare.gov, which was launched in July 2010, and is the first website in
Spanish to provide consumers with both public and private health coverage options tailored

In addition, the website is a one-stop-shop for information about the implementation of the
Affordable Care Act as well as other health care resources. The website connects consumers to

CuidadodeSalud.gov is particularly important for Latinos, who have the highest rates of uninsurance in the nation—more than one in three Latinos are uninsured. Without healthcare

coverage, Latinos have less access to care. Latinos are only half as likely to have a usual source of
primary care, and half of Latinos do not have a regular doctor. Twenty percent of low-income
Latino youth have gone a year without a health care visit – a rate three times higher than that for
high-income Whites.
CuidadoDeSalud.gov includes price estimates for health insurance plans. In the weeks and
months ahead, new information on preventing disease and illness and improving the quality of
health care for all Americans will also be posted.
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was created in 1986 and is one of the most significant
outcomes of the 1985 Secretary's Task Force Report on Black and Minority Health. The Office is
dedicated to improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the
development of health policies and programs that will help eliminate health disparities. OMH was
reauthorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
Office of Minority Health provides relevant information and resources concerning minority health
in the U.S. It provides data and statistics pertaining to health issues affecting monitories, guides
about cultural competence to health care providers and organizations that work with minorities,
and it provides information on broad health topics. It also has a resource center, called the OMH
Resource Center which is a one stop shop for minority health literature, research, and
referrals. The center also provides technical assistance to community organizations on
HIV/AIDS.
OMH’s website is available in Spanish and it provides complete information about HIV/AIDS that
includes statistics, informational sheet, links to principal national HIV/AIDS information
resources, news, and publications.

HIVGuidelines.Org is a HIV Clinical Resource sponsored by the Office of the Medical Director, New
York Department of Health AIDS Institute in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University
Division of Infectious Diseases. The site only provides information in English. The only the website
retrieves in Spanish is the NASTAD study A Través de Nuestros Ojos (Through Our Eyes): Promoting

in English but it provides a list of links to HIV/AIDS resources in Spanish, including resources in Latin

InfoSIDA/AIDSinfo
AIDSinfo, a service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), offers access to
the latest, federally approved HIV/AIDS medical practice guidelines, HIV treatment and prevention
clinical trials, and other research information for health care providers, researchers, people
affected by HIV/AIDS, and the general public. The site AIDSinfo has an En Español tab that takes
the user to infoSIDA – the same and entire information AIDSinfo has is translated in Spanish at
infoSIDA.

MCN is a trusted source of essential clinical information about emerging primary care issues that
occur at the intersection of health and mobility. To best assist clinicians working with migrants,

Poder Sano
Poder Sano is a new initiative by Farmworker Justice to help mobilize rural Latino communities
around the prevention of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. Through

Since NAHC was founded in 1993, its coalition of national and community-based organizations
and individuals provides strong advocacy, representation, and training for thousands of

National AIDS Treatment Advocacy Project - NATAP
NATAP is a New York State non-profit corporation. Its mission is to educate individuals about HIV
and Hepatitis treatments and to advocate on the behalf of all people living with HIV/AIDS and
HCV. NATAP’s efforts in these areas are conducted on local, national, and international levels.
Locally, NATAP collaborates with other organizations as well as city and state agencies.
Nationally, NATAP works with Federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and
the National Institute of Health and advocates on policy and treatment issues.
The treatment information that NATAP provides reaches medical professionals, allied
professionals, patients, caregivers, underserved communities, and other interested parties in over
40 countries.
Most of the information provided by NATAP is in English. However one can retrieve some reports,
and informational pamphlets about HIV/AIDS in Spanish through the site’s search engine. The

The National Association of People with AIDS - NAPWA
NAPWA, is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in Maryland, founded in 1983. NAPWA
advocates for the lives and dignity of all people living with HIV/AIDS, especially the more than a
million Americans who live with it today. NAPWA does national legislative HIV/AIDS advocacy
work, public education, and capacity building.
NAPWA’s website is only available in English and it does not provide direct information in Spanish.
The only provides links to other agencies, such as the National Network of Libraries of Medicine
(with medical facts in many languages), and the CDC with information about HIV/AIDS in Spanish.
National Episcopal AIDS Coalition – NEAC
In response to those in our church who were living with HIV/AIDS and to the growing community
of those affected by AIDS—caregivers, partners, friends, and loved ones—the National Episcopal
AIDS Coalition was formed in 1988. Today, AIDS continues to spread in spite of treatment
breakthroughs. NEAC continues to provide support for HIV and AIDS ministries across the
Episcopal Church of the United States.

National HIV/AIDS Clinicians’ Consultation Center - NCCC
The goal of the NCCCO is to supply health care providers with a national resource to obtain
timely, expert and appropriate responses to clinical questions related to:
Treatment of persons with HIV infection. The National HIV Telephone Consultation Service
(Warmline) offers expert clinical consultation on antiretroviral treatment options, drug
interactions and toxicity, resistance testing, prophylaxis and management of opportunistic
infections, and primary care of persons with HIV/AIDS.
Health care worker exposure to HIV and other blood-borne pathogens. The National Clinicians'
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Hotline (PEPline) provides around-the-clock advice on managing
occupational exposures to HIV, and hepatitis B and C.
Treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women and their infants The National Perinatal HIV
Consultation and Referral Service (Perinatal Hotline) provides 24-hour advice from HIV experts on

indications and interpretations of HIV testing, and consultation on treating HIV-infected
pregnant women and their exposed infants. The Referral Service connects HIV-infected women
with HIV-experienced care providers.
The Website is available in English only. The site does offer information a few pieces of
informationin Spanish however. It has a link with information about how to request a Warmline
consultation, and also contains the PEPline Guidance for Occupational Exposures in Spanish
(Consejos de PEPline para Exposiciones Ocupacionales). The PEPline Guidances are a quick guide

The National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Centers (NNPTC)
The National Network of STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers (NNPTC) is a CDC-funded group of

Project Inform is an NGO that was founded in 1985 to promote the ideas that people with

El Presidente Barack Obama ha anunciado que todas las restricciones anteriores que afectaban a
las personas con VIH para entrar o inmigrar a los Estados Unidos, han sido abolidas a partir del 4 de
enero de 2010. La regulación final que fue publicada en el Registro Federal del 2 de noviembre de
2010, estableció que: “como resultado de esta regulación final, los extranjeros dejarán de no ser
admitidos en los Estados Unidos solamente por el hecho de estar infectados con el VIH, y no se les
exigirá hacerse una prueba del VIH como parte del chequeo médico requerido para inmigrar a los
Estados Unidos.”
Esto significa que a partir del 4 de enero de 2010, las personas que viven con el VIH pueden entrar
a los Estados Unidos como cualquier otra persona. Sin embargo, la regulación requiere que las

The Pew Hispanic Center
The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, has updated its demographic and
economic profiles of the Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations in the 50 U.S. states and the
District of Columbia. These profiles are based on Pew Hispanic Center analysis of the Census
Bureau's 2010 American Community Survey. Interactive maps, county Hispanic population data
and state demographic and economic profiles are available at the Pew Hispanic Center's website.
Among the key findings from the state profiles:
• The 10 states with the largest Hispanic populations are California, Texas, Florida, New York,
Illinois, Arizona, New Jersey, Colorado, New Mexico and Georgia.
• The 10 states in which the Hispanic share of the population is highest are New Mexico, Texas,
California, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Colorado, New Jersey, New York and Illinois.
• Nearly half (47%) of all Hispanics live in California (14.1 million) or Texas (9.5 million), down
from 50% in 2000.
• California has 5.4 million Hispanic immigrants, more than any other state. California is followed
by Texas, with 2.9 million Hispanics immigrants, and Florida with 2.1 million Hispanic
immigrants.
• Slightly more than half of Hispanics in Maryland (54%), the District of Columbia (52%) and
Alabama (51%) are foreign born, the highest foreign born shares among Hispanics in the U.S.
Among the key findings from the county database:

PEPFAR’s website provides an array of HIV/AIDS resources and information related to global
reports, multilateral cooperation efforts, public-private partnerships, congressional reports, and
implementer resources among other topics. The information provided is available in English only.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services – USCIS
USCIS has its entire website available in Spanish, however there is little or no direct information
provided that is related to HIV/AIDS. USCIS only makes mention about HIV/AIDS is some of its
immigration forms and processes (in the form of a note regarding the HIV exam, and information
for the Asylum application), and in a PDF information sheet its has for U.S. Citizens about various
subject ranging from adoption processes to travelling information. AIDS is mentioned in the
information it provides about vaccinations needed to travel abroad. To access this pfd information
sheet one needs to type “SIDA” in the search box.

HHS provides HIV/AIDS information in Spanish thought different sites it sponsors such as
MEDICINEPLUS, and HEALTHFINDER.GOV – both sites entirely available in Spanish. HHS also
provides valuable HIV/AIDS information through its Office of Minority Health. HHS also has some
valuable information about civil rights in Spanish, though its Office of Civil Rights.
MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and
friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, it brings you information about diseases,
conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand.

of HealthCare.gov. Consistent with the mandate in the Affordable Care Act, CuidadodeSalud.gov
is the partner site of HealthCare.gov, which was launched in July 2010, and is the first website in
Spanish to provide consumers with both public and private health coverage options tailored
specifically for their needs in a single, easy-to-use tool.
In addition, the website is a one-stop-shop for information about the implementation of the
Affordable Care Act as well as other health care resources. The website connects consumers to

quality rankings for local health care providers as well as preventive services.
CuidadodeSalud.gov is particularly important for Latinos, who have the highest rates of uninsurance in the nation—more than one in three Latinos are uninsured. Without healthcare
coverage, Latinos have less access to care. Latinos are only half as likely to have a usual source of
primary care, and half of Latinos do not have a regular doctor. Twenty percent of low-income
Latino youth have gone a year without a health care visit – a rate three times higher than that for
high-income Whites.
CuidadoDeSalud.gov includes price estimates for health insurance plans. In the weeks and
months ahead, new information on preventing disease and illness and improving the quality of
health care for all Americans will also be posted.

affected by HIV/AIDS, and the general public. The site AIDSinfo has an En Español tab that takes
