Effective Spring, 2006 Baldwin-Wallace College Division of Education Lesson Planning Form I. Major Topic: La Casa en Mango, Reading Comprehension Date: 3-9-12 Grade Level: 11&12 II. MATERIALS: La Casa en Mango III. CANDIDATE Resources: La Casa en Mango Street & Senora Caraballo IV. STATE/Local Standards: Communication Communities Culture IV. (a) National/State technology standards V. Objective(s): By the end of 40 min, the students will: Have gained an understanding of story in the Chapter “Un sandwich de arroz” to make a comparison and contrast paragraph about their own experience with an embarrassing moment in school. VI. PROCEDURES: Introduction Motivation/Hook: Have the question on the board, “¿Has experimentado una situación vergonzosa en la escuela que te causó pensar que eras diferente de los otros estudiantes?” (Have you experienced an embarrassing situation in school?) Share your own. Let the students share their stories. Tell the students that they are going to use this experience to relate to Esperanzas experiences after the class. Transition/Focus Attention: Esperanza también tenía una experiencia vergonzosa. Vamos a leer el capitulo “sándwich de arroz”, y después vamos a repasar nuevo vocabulario, y discutir el capitulo. (Esperanza also had an embarrasing experience. We are going to read the chapter, then new vocabulary and finally discuss the chapter. Set Behavior Expectations: Attention during the overview of the chapter and the vocabulary, students will be expected to be active and attentive during the discussion of the chapter. Set Purpose: To check for reading comprehension and give the students to practice comparative writing. Strategy and Grouping Pattern Used: Entire class lecture, entire class discussion. Group Size: 20-25 Steps/Learning Activities/Differentiated Instruction: Anticipated Time for each step 1. Hook discussion of embarrassing stories. (10 min) 2. Reading of the chapter/ discussion of comprehension (new vocab, confusing passages) (20 min) 3. Discussion of embarrassing moment. Writing the stories and sharing them orally. Ask the following questions, see attached guided discussion sheet. After the discussion ask them to write how this is similar to the experience of Esperanza en la Casa en Mango. Closure: What new vocabulary did you learn, how does this help with your Spanish language skills? Assessment Activities: In class discussion, comparison paragraph. Effective Spring, 2006 Transition: Monday we will continue with the future, here is some practice for the weekend. VII. REFLECTION How do you know that learning took place? How does the data support your conclusion? What kind of adaptations did you make to accommodate individual differences? What other adaptations would be helpful to accommodate the needs of individual students? Other than the modifications discussed above, would you change any aspect of the plan or how you conducted the lesson? (E.g. introduction and transitions, sequence of activities, time management, questioning, etc.) Why or why not? What changes would you make?
