Fiesta weekend is behind us and it was a fun filled warm weekend. The Fiesta Committee for 2015 was comprised
of Gina Robles, Claudia Brandes, Hilda and Jorge Hernandez, David Sharkey, Alicia and Chava Huizar, Irma Garcia
and Mark Forbush. Irma Garcia and her family worked tirelessly revamping our game booths this year. Gerardo Ramirez helped us coordinate logistics over the weekend and Elizabeth DeSimone handled the permitting process. A
special thank you to those individuals and to the over 200 volunteers that helped in booths, provided security, and
clean-up. That figure does not include the participating ministries that had their own set of tireless volunteers than
ran food booths, prepared food, and sold all weekend long. If we could gage our success by the sold out food and the
merry faces, then we had a great Fiesta. Students from St. Elizabeth Confirmation program and local high school
students from programs such as PUENTE (from Marshall) participated. We can't possibly name everyone that
helped but we can say a heartfelt thank you. Fiesta is a community building event and a fundraiser but more importantly it’s a tradition for our Church. We were glad to have been a part of it this year. We are very appreciative of
our Sponsors that helped offset some of the operating costs. The financial results will be announced in the coming
weeks once the final accounting is completed. Thanks again, the 2015 Fiesta Committee.
Gina Robles, Claudia Brandes, Hilda y Jorge Hernández, David Sharkey, Alicia y Chava Huizar, Irma García y Mark
Forbush.
Fiesta 2015.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER
Last Sunday we heard the
familiar passage from John’s
Gospel in which Jesus uses the
metaphor of the vine and the
branches. In that passage we
were told that if we remained in
Christ we would bear much fruit.
Today’s Gospel tells us just what
that fruit is: love. Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to
love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so
much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would
have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain
in him, this week tells us to remain in his love. In a world
marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s final words in
today’s Gospel are a great challenge: “This I command you:
love one another.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the
celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life
is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon to
repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and
rue the day!” Memories of old pagan parties in May endured,
and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a
stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not approve
of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of the white
wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to do with
Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his
affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at
the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that
memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of
marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family
practices. A wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having a child.” Don’t let
Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans!

DID YOU KNOW?
Child molesters look like everyone else
They do not look like scary people that anyone should know to avoid.
They do live with their families and in our neighborhoods. An important way to assure the safety of children is to know the warning signs of
adults who present a risk of harm to children. Some of these signs include: 1. Wanting to be alone with children. 2. Allowing children to do
things their parents would not permit. 3. Being more excited to be with
children than with adults. 4. Discouraging others from participating in
activities involving kids. For information about the VIRTUS® Child
Sexual Abuse Prevention programs contact: [email protected] or go to www.virtus.org.
