Fourth Sunday of Advent
DECEMBER 23, 2012
Elizabeth is a great saint. Unlike her husband Zechariah and
her cousin Mary, no angel appeared to her announcing the
birth of a child. But we know from today’s Gospel that she
was a woman of profound faith, with a deep relationship with
God.
Elizabeth had become pregnant in her old age, and her baby
was John the Baptist. She was very much the senior of Mary,
who was probably still a teenager. In the religious world of
her time, Elizabeth, an older respectable woman, married to a
member of the priestly tribe, was far more important than an
unwed teenage mother. But Elizabeth’s faith was very
deep. She was absolutely in tune with the Holy Spirit. When
the baby in her womb heard Mary’s voice, he leaped, and
Elizabeth certainly felt that leap! (Mothers, you know what
that feels like.) But Elizabeth felt not only the actual leap, but
also the deeper meaning of what was happening. She knew
that her baby had leapt for joy at Mary’s voice. Her baby
knew that this woman was “the mother of my Lord”. And in
her humility and absolute trust in God, Elizabeth knew it
too. She knew that Mary was far more important than she
was, despite all worldly appearances. Her words, “Blessed are
you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb,”
have echoed down through countless generations.
Elizabeth is a great model for us, because she was happy with
what God was doing in someone else’s life—even though that
someone else was considered less “important” than her in the
religious world of the time. No one knows why God chooses
different people: God has absolute free will in the matter! He
chose to keep Mary free from original sin from the moment of
her conception—His choice! He chose to call Abraham to be
the founder of the Chosen People. We don’t know why. His
choice! Our job is not to question God’s decisions but to be
like Elizabeth and celebrate and rejoice in God’s actions in the
lives of other people. Let’s affirm and celebrate the work of
the Holy Spirit in one another, and remember that God’s ways
are not our ways. And thank God for that!

¡Decidió mantener a María

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Bài trích sách thư gởi tín hữu Do thái tường thuật
