"Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy...Jesus, by his words, his actions, and his entire person reveals the mercy of God" (Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus, 1). "The disposition to be kind and forgiving. Founded on compassion, mercy differs from compassion or the feeling of sympathy in putting this feeling into practice with a readiness to assist. It is therefore the ready willingness to help anyone in need, especially in need of pardon or reconciliation" (Fr. John Hardon, Modern Catholic Dictionary). From www.charlottediocese.org LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES The message found in today’s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today’s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suffering. God’s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP All women of the parish are welcome to join the Women’s Spirituality Group just after the 9:00 AM Mass on Saturday, October 1st. We will hear about the amazing life of Mother Angelica, "A woman who dared to dream". A woman of our day whose faith showed us that anything is possible with God. Come join us for good conversation and fellowship. Please contact Elaine Lovelace with any questions. 828-545-3251 LITURGICAL MINISTER SCHEDULE October 1 & 2 Saturday, October 1, 5:00pm Lectors: Elise Henshaw Dennis Mehring Altar Server: Tonya Kelley Hospitality: Jo MacWilliam Eucharistic Ministers; Connie Cathey Lynn Mehring Sunday, October 2, 10:00am Lectors: Elaine Lovelace Bernie Mendiondo Altar Servers: Chester Zima Amerie Delfin Hospitality: David Hayden Eucharistic Ministers: Jean Gales Greg Holden Maureen Hayden LITURGY & SPIRITUAL LIFE IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS There is a need in the following areas: * Children’s Liturgy of the Word—Anyone interested in leading the children’s Liturgy of the Word, on a monthly basis. Linda Gaines, Liturgy & Spiritual Life Commission September 25, 2016 WEEKLY KNIGHT Knights to the Rescue When a tree belonging to the widow of one of our deceased Brothers posed a clear and present danger to traffic, the Knights went out on September 10 and took care of business, saving the risk of injury to passersby and the cost of a professional tree cutter. When Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney created the Knights in 1882, it was with this idea in mind – that we would always be there when called upon by the widows and orphans of our Brother Knights.
