Han transcurrido 4 meses desde las pasadas elecciones. Observo
que con el mismo presupuesto del año pasado, el señor Alcalde
ha mantenido relativamente limpio el pueblo y muy
particularmente la carr. 466. Durante este tiempo comenzó a
trabajar el precioso Head Start que inauguró antes de las
elecciones. Nuestros lectores nos indican que llueven las quejas
inclusive de vicios de construcción y de falta de permisos que
esperamos se resuelvan beneficiosamente para todas las partes.
¿La playa de Jobos? Bien gracias, todavía está en veremos y el
Paseo sin culminar. ¿El soterrado del pueblo? También, bien
gracias. De ese no tengo ni idea de cuándo culminará aunque de
cuando en cuando los contratistas a cargo de la culminación del
mismo, hacen algo. El alumbrando del conector que algunos
llaman el Conector de la Muerte y que es obra del Gobierno
Estatal, ante las insistencias del señor Alcalde le tiraron unos
cables por aire y así prenden las luces en las noches. Una lástima
porque por gente inescrupulosa no puede ser soterrado.

comenzaran?
Lo que más me ha satisfecho de parte del señor Alcalde ha sido
la iniciativa de unir esfuerzos con el DRNA, Policía Estatal y
Municipal y grupos comunitarios para establecer vigilancia para
que los corredores de 4 racks se dejen de hacer lo que por años
han hecho y he criticado. En los 7 años que vivo en Isabela no
ha pasado un mes en que no tenga que llamar a la Policía – en
especial los domingos en la tarde- por lo menos una o dos veces
al mes para que calmen a esa gente transitando con sus vehículos
tanto por la 466 como por la playa. La carr. 466 en los domingos,
después de las 3 PM es tierra de nadie. Así que señor Alcalde le
deseo éxito en esta gestión y estamos esperanzados en que
cumplirá su palabra.
También el señor Alcalde ha comenzado o está en vía de entrega
de instalaciones deportivas. Eso es bueno para nuestra juventud
ya que algunos de nuestros lectores indican que hay más de 70
puntos de drogas para un pueblo de poco más de 45 mil
habitantes. Esto es, un punto de droga por poco más de cada 6
habitantes. Señor Alcalde siga con el programa de deportes que
estoy consciente que usted no es responsable de la criminalidad.
Sin embargo le invito a que también haga alianzas a esos efectos
puesto que en los 7 años que vivo en Isabela es este el primero
en que en menos de 3 meses ha habido más de 5 asesinatos en
nuestro pueblo.

Finalmente le exhorto a abrir la Oficina de Turismo con gente
que conozca a Isabela, haga alianzas con el Museo de Fotos , con
los Amigos del Arte, con los del Chinchorros.com. Estoy segura
que todos estarán dispuestos a darle la mano al amigo Purin para
siga con su trabajo. Rotule nuestras calles , es una vergüenza que
llevamos más de 10 años sin rotular. Ya tuve u a investida en mi
carro a consecuencia de la falta de rotulación en las calles de La
Marina en donde todos creen que van por la vía franca. Hace
menos de un mes iba a tener otro accidente con un contratista de
su Municipio. Todos los que vivimos aquí y hacemos negocios
estamos dispuestos a darle una mano obsequiando rótulos

El Ojo de Agua de Aguadilla

«A base de» y no «en base a»
«A base de» es la forma adecuada de escribir esta locución
en español; la variante «en base a» es inapropiada.
Tanto 'papa' como 'sumo pontífice', 'romano pontífice 'o
'santo padre' se escriben en minúscula, tal como indican las
normas de la Ortografía de la lengua española sobre
«sustantivos que designan títulos nobiliarios, dignidades y
cargos o empleos de cualquier rango».
«Queramos sí, querramos no»

Los colonizadores, al igual que los taínos, establecieron sus poblados
cerca de fuentes confiables de agua. En la mayoría de los pueblos
la fuente fue un río, pero en Aguadilla fue el manantial llamado Ojo
de Agua. El punto donde surge el agua fue rodeado hacia 1850 por
una caja de mampostería con seis grifos a cada lado. En el próximo
nivel (detrás de los balaustres) se hizo una piscina donde en días
alternos se bañaban los hombres y las mujeres con sus niños. En el
tercer nivel (donde cae la pequeña cascada) bebían los bueyes y los
caballos. De este punto en adelante el cauce, hoy canalizado,
serpentea una corta distancia hasta el mar; un mapa del siglo 17 le
llama Río Chico.
«Querer» es un verbo de los llamados irregulares en nuestra
gramática porque algunas de sus formas no siguen el patrón
esperado. Sobre el uso de la doble erre en los tiempos de este
verbo, recuerde que el futuro y el condicional son los que la
tendrán. Así, lo correcto es decir: querré, querrás, querrá,
querremos, querrán, querría, querrías, etc. Mientras que la
forma de presente de subjuntivo de la primera persona plural
es «queramos». Piense antes de decir *«querramos», pues
no se trata de un futuro, y que por tanto la doble erre no le
corresponde.
Para referirse a 'prueba o torneo deportivo' se usa
«competencia» en el español americano y «competición»,

Aunque no se conoce el curso exacto que el agua sigue hasta llegar
a la superficie, sabemos que se origina en la porción oeste de la
formación Aymamón, una banda de roca caliza que se extiende
desde Aguadilla hasta Dorado. A lo largo de la banda hay numerosos
manantiales, algunos con un volumen mucho mayor que el de
Aguadilla. Aquí el agua brota por dos huecos. Uno conecta debajo
a una cámara de al menos 12 pies de ancho y el otro conecta a la
misma cámara por un túnel. En la cámara y en el exterior viven
camarones y peces. Como sucede con los ríos y los demás
manantiales, el volumen de agua fluctúa con la precipitación,
aumentando durante la época de lluvia y reduciéndose durante la
época seca.
Como se mencionó antes, la caja del manantial tiene a sus lados
perforaciones que sirven como tomas de agua. Aquí obtuvieron las
amas de casa agua para cocinar y beber, los aguadores líquidos para
envasar y vender, y los capitanes de barcos la reserva de agua
necesaria para largos viajes. Los alrededores de la caja siempre han
estado adornados por tres elegantes estatuas. El parque donde se
encuentra el manantial se conoce como el Parterre y fue remodelado
por última vez en el 2004. Es un mugar agradable, con un ojo de
agua lleno de historia.

Siempre han mantenido sus raíces y el pasado 17 de marzo en
las magnificas instalaciones del Palacete Moreau [antes la
residencia de la Familia Labadie] se llevó a cabo una amena
reunión de descendientes de corsos del área Oeste. La misma
consistió de charlas ofrecidas por el ingeniero Vivoni, el doctor
José Mari Mutt y el el licenciado Santiago Mari, quien coordinó
la misma. Luego de ello, los descendientes de corsos, así como
sus invitados disfrutaron de un almuerzo y actividad de
confraternización los jardines de este magnífico palacete.
Felicitamos a todos los corsos por tan excelente actividad,
encuentro que llevan a cabo varias veces durante el año en
diversos lugares de nuestro país. Igualmente felicitamos al señor
Alcalde de Moca que cuenta con estas magnificas, mantenidas
y preservadas instalaciones propias para este tipo de actividades

ISABELA
The western -most town on the north coast, has a bundle of places to visit. Beaches for bathe, snorkel, scuba and surfing, a forest
reserve, caves, lakes, rivers and historical sites, are a few to mention. There’s a small bathing resort known as Guajataca which
right now is under restoration. On Route 113, the entrance with the scultupture of the head of the native Indian called Mabodamaca
, you will find El Pastillo Beach, Villa Pesquera [Fising Village] and Sardinera beach.
El Pastillo is the first beach to your right side of the road, small bath and is part of a new golf resort, called Royal Isabela which
is the best and biggest of the Caribbean. It is a place where large turtles come every year to lay their eggs and hatch baby turtles.
You won’t find many signs showing which route to take; so feel free to ask neighbors. There is a strong community sense to
preserve the area.
Once in downtown, near the Plaza, take a right to Rd. 466, and go straight to Bajuras Ward. Almost at the end of the Road is a
big complex called Isabela Beach Court. Take the road to your right where you will find a small fishing village, Villa Pesquera
and the Sardinera Beach. Villa Pesquera is a small bunch of nice-looking kiosks, where you can get some good, reasonably-priced
local food, drinks and just enjoy the area. During the week you can find some action but when it turns quite interesting is during
Friday and Saturdays nights and Sunday afternoons. There is live music, cheap food and drinks, motorcycles and locals. There
are also a couple of small restaurants and a small fish market where you’ll find the catch of the day and lobsters. Sardinera beach
is a small beach suitable for swimming, especially for children, because it is protected from most of the rough waves. The sand
sometimes you will find some trash so it is appreciated if you collect your garbage before leaving the place.
Going thru Rd. 466, along the Paseo Lineal, the next beach is Poza de Teodoro. This is a relative small swimming hole, protected
from the pounding ocean waves and visited for local’s family gatherings. Avoid it during long weekend, lots of four tracks, people,
noise and trash. It is beautiful and you may have a great time if you visit it during the week or normal weekends.
On your way to Montones beach, you can find Middles beach, famous for the great international and local surfing competitions
sponsored by the PR Tourism Company and other entities.
Montones [the rock] is great for swimming as well as snorkeling, but you should be careful for its underwater currents. In Montones
you will find Villas del Mar Guest House with its beautiful beach cottages. This guest house is part of the Paradores de Puerto
Rico and it is affordable, clean and a great family resort. Great sunset views from the rock.
Continuing the same road, next is Jobos Beach, great for surfing but as Montones you will have to very careful because of the
dangerous underwater currents. Sometimes they let you park near Jobos Beach, otherwise you have to park in the street. If that’s
the case, don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. Next to Jobos beach is the Pozo de Jacinto, a dangerous but beautiful blow hole
worth seeing. In Jobos you ca have drinks and food at Jacinto, Almendro, Surfside, Happy Belly and other small restaurants
around the area.
Out of Jobos and into Rd 466, continue straight ahead until a curve with a sign of Villa Montaña resort; make a right and continue
thru the Road. Park in the street and walk to your right where you will find Shacks beach [el Bajo de los Bravo]. There is no
parking, no signals except for some sign of Villa Montaña’s Resort and of Ola Lola, a local bar. Be careful where you park and
again, no valuables in your vehicle. If you are planning to snorkel try it safely; if scuba, go to one of the local experts. This is the
most spectacular beach to snorkel. You can find lots of colored fish, manatees, squids, etc.

RESTAURANTS
There is variety of restaurants in and around Isabela: Puerto Rican, seafood, Chinese, Thai,
Japanese Mexican and international cuisine. Remember eating and drinking water in Puerto Rico is
safe.
Fast foods: Mc D, BKg, KFC, Taco Maker, Wendy’s, Subway. Most of them in Rd. No. 2 near Isabela Mall
Puerto Rican cuisine: Las 3 F’s of Piro and Patria; Lechonera of Onix; El Timbiriche of Daly; and Pastelillos
[turnovers] joints in Jobos and Estación Avenue in town.
Tapas and drinks: Villa Pesquera
Japanese: Pedro’s Sushi in Rd.4466. Take out and know Pedro and Susan have a few tables outside. Believe me, one of the best
sushis in Puerto Rico.
One Ten Thai : in Rd.110 in Aguadilla. Excellent food, no reservation and it opens at 5 PM. Some Saturdays they have live
music. Americans, locals and visitors
Italian/Pizza: Some of them along Rd. 110 in Aguadilla; brick oven in the Cheesecake Shop in Rd. No. 2 and also my favorite
is the Pellot Pizza outside Gate 1 in Ramey in Aguadilla, Wilnelly’s, Pizza 2 Go in downtown Isabela and Brendy’s in Jobos

International Cuisine with a taste: Marina’s Restaurant in a second story last century house in Aguadilla. Great local cuisine,
sushi, seafood. They bake their own sourdough bread and desserts. Everything from scratch
Seafood: Olas y Arena in Villas del Mar Hau, Eclipse in Villa Montaña, Ocean Front, Mi Casita Tropical, Happy Belly and
Surfside in Rd 4466 in Jobos Beach and Jacinto. Surfside at Royal Isabela, only by appointment

Who were the two most popular and admired ladies in Isabela,
Puerto Rico, at the beginning of the 20th Century and up to the
decade of the 1950? The answer is: first, Doña María
Concepción, and the second, Doña Ana Pino, both of them
regularly assisted our mothers during childbirth. It was
customary on those days to disclaim responsibility to midwives
(comadrónas),for any harm that may ensue due during this
natural procedure in our society, yet, both parties were well
informed, experienced and of mutual trust.
Few years later, he left home for the first time to a far off a trip
in 1951, as a member of the selection of the Puerto Rican
baseball amateur team competing in the World Baseball Amateur
Championship. Puerto Rico won the tournament with Felix as
their third baseman, being one of the most distinguished players
of the tournament.
From this experience he had learned that it is not always easy to

The realization of two anxiously expected blessings from the
Spirit in Heaven, one, of being bestowed upon him the title of
patriarch of his family, and secondly, the realization of being a
father. This beautiful tiny human being has been entrusted to
them by God.
All of the sudden, they felt scared…doubts took over them…
what if something happens to our baby? Juan inquired to Bila;
will I be able to know what to do? Will I be able to be a good
father? And so on. They were so young at the time, that they felt
those same kinds of fears. Bila replied, we are not along,
however, our Heavenly Father will be with us, all the time, isn’t?
That night of July 29, 1934, approximately at 1: AM come to
life, Felix Mantilla Lamela, “the cat,” as he is now known by
baseball fans. He is being the first born and raised isabelino ever
to be a member of a Professional Major League Baseball League
club.
Fourteen months later, the young father, Juan, clutched the hand
of his 13 month old son, as the child wobbly took a few steps on
the sidewalk in front of their small suburban home. It was a
warm day in mid-summer, and for the gather it was a choice time
to spend some precious moments with his son. Life was good,
the father thought as he steadied his infant son making his way
in the world that was no bigger than the sidewalk in front of their
home.
Bila kept a small Diary in her room, and one of the entries read
as follow: Dear Diary, “Today I learned how to tie the magic
bow that keeps a shoelace from coming untied. Alleluia! Our
baby’s now a sophomore in High School,” so you can image
how excited am I as a mother. Unknown to his mother, Félix
knew about this diary, and one day he wrote in it: “Dear Dad, I
know Mom´s in there somewhere; I saw her eyes blink” Now
hear this all the “mommies” in Isabela, I’m here to tell you that
high on the list of things you can do, is to insure that as you
depart from them, as often as necessary, even if it’s for a mind’s
ride to“Mommy-land,” never forget those days at home, they
really are the best one of your lives. It is interesting to know that
Félix, practically speaking, left home at an age of 17 years old,
to pursue his professional career as a professional baseball player.
When I was attending college in 1958 at the “The Poly”in San
Germán, I received a call from “The Cat”, and during the
conversation, he told me, “I just hung up the phone from a
lengthy conversation. I’ve been chatting long distance with my
dad. Notice I didn’t call him the man who used to be my dad.
Nor, now that I’m grown man with my own teenagers, I do refer
to him as Juan. He has always been, is now, and will continue
to be Dad forever”.He said, Estronza I’m out of it, and
reluctantly and still sorry I left an empty nest in Isabela, but
that’s life, my friend. That day I received a lesson from my
friend, together we share the trials and triumphs, the unexpected.
We nurture each other and try to fill in some of the gaps. We
replay the old days.
But all too soon, the days turned into weeks, the weeks into We both were suspended for attending the “Teatro Rafols” for
two months by a beloved gentleman, Mr. Edwin Rafols, the
months and the months into years, and the young child grew
owner.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures"
we must let Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil
money to fund mosques and Madrasa Islamic schools to preach
hate in Australia, New Zealand, UK, America and Canada, while
no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church,
synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab
country to teach love and tolerance.. I'm tired of being told I must
lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one
is allowed to debate.
The reason was for throwing small balls of paper in the section
of “el gallinero”section in the second floor of the theater, and as
of today, we both regret the incident. Thanks for the intervention
of a mutual friend, now Doctor José“Pepe” Rafols, his son, the
outcome was changed, and the restriction was changed for just
one month. That day we look forward to what was ahead, the
purpose of life and be worthy enough to return back to the
presence of our Heavenly father, and a well to apologize again
to a good man, Mr. Edwin Rafols.

Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; Muslims
burning schools for girls; Muslims stoning teenage rape victims
to death for "adultery"; Muslims mutilating the genitals of little
girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a
law tells them.
Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 83. Because, mostly,
I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making.
I'm just sorry for my granddaughter and their children. Thank
God I'm on the way out and not on the way in. There is no way
this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on! This
is your chance to make a difference.

Since December 2006 we have been enjoying Ola Lola’s Garden
in Bajuras Wd., in Rd 4466 , Int. in Shacks Beach or as locals
