A Message from Fr. José...
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are completing the first month of the year
2014 with many blessings. Let us thank God for his
love for us. It is a good time to continue reflecting
on our lives and if we made some sort of resolution,
evaluate it and see if we have put sufficient effort
into it.
What calls our attention in the readings for this
Sunday and what we should highlight, is the perfect
harmony that exists among them. This is not only
because the Gospel of Matthew cites the passage
from Isaiah that we read about in the first reading,
but because in all of them, including the responsorial Psalm, Christ is presented as the light that enlightens our reality today. To begin with, we see
that Jesus is the light that has gradually been illuminating our world. We can imagine that the story
speaks of the beginning of his public life, but long
ago that light had begun to shine.
Christ appears as light, but light that allows us to
discover Him. Jesus is the light that gently shines
and illuminates our way to God. He is the light for
each of us which in turn requires us to continue to
make bright the way for others, the light that surrounds us all and unites us under its glow. Christ is
the only one who has loved us as God loves us. That
is why it is so sad that we sometimes allow divisions among us in His name. In a special way this
Sunday let us ask the Spirit, principle of unity, to
enlighten us with the true and only light: Christ.
Lord our God: you have illuminated our way with
the word of your Son. May He transform us in His
image, as a light in our world. May we bring a
spark of hope where there is despair, joy where
there is sadness, love where there is indifference or,
worse still, where there is hatred and malice. We
ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

us that the Adult Ed. class, “Gospel of Mark” is
postponed until further notice. This class meets at
St. Philip Adult Center on Tues/Thurs. Hopefully
these classes will resume beginning to midFebruary...we will keep you posted.

A little journey into RCIA
(the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)…
For the next several weeks we’ll take a look at this
process & what it also means for us. We are all on a
journey, always renewing our commitment of
membership within the Catholic Church. It’s a lifelong
conversion & renewal process.
We have two candidates this year, Robin & Brian Willis.
During Lent, some of you - hopefully all of you - will get a
chance to meet them during Mass.
Please keep Robin, Brian, their sponsors & myself
in your prayers as we prepare for their
reception into the Catholic Church.
Some people think that St. Philip Parish is run
mostly by volunteers. While we are blessed to have
many dedicated volunteers, paid staff members are
essential for the parish to exist and thrive. Here is a

FIESTA DE SAN BLAS
La próxima semana después de la misa usted tendrá
la oportunidad de recibir la bendición de garganta
con motivo de la celebración del día de San Blas
que es el 3 de Febrero.
DESAYUNO BIBLICO
¿Quieres conocer la llave maestra que abre el
conocimiento a la biblia?
El Sábado 8 de febrero a partir de las
8:00am se llevara acabo un estudio bíblico en la
parroquia de San Willebrord, en el que usted podrá
aprender mas sobre la sagrada escritura. Los facilitadores serán Carlos Hernandez y Cesar Quiroz,
esperamos puedan asistir. Es necesario que usted
lleve : Biblia, Cuaderno y Lápiz y si es posible, algo
para compartir durante el desayuno.

Con mucha bendición estamos terminando el primer mes del Año 2014. Queremos agradecer a Dios
por su amor para con nosotros. Es un buen tiempo
para seguir meditando sobre nuestras vidas y si hicimos algún propósito, evaluarlo y ver que tanto hemos
trabajado en ese propósito hecho.
Lo que nos llama la atención de las lecturas de
este domingo y que debemos resaltar es la perfecta
armonía que existe entre ellas. Esto no sólo es debido
a que en el Evangelio de Mateo se nos cite el pasaje
de Isaías que tenemos como primera lectura, sino
porque en todas ellas, incluyendo el salmo responsorial, Cristo se nos presenta como la luz que alumbra
hoy muchas realidades. Para empezar vemos que Jesús es la luz que poco a poco se ha ido iluminando.
Pensemos que el relato nos habla del comienzo de su
vida pública, pero ya hacía mucho tiempo que esa luz
había comenzado a iluminar.
Cristo se nos muestra como luz, pero una luz que
nos permite descubrir su persona. Jesús es la luz que
poco a poco se enciende para iluminarnos a Dios. Es
una luz para todos nosotros y que a su vez necesita de
nosotros para continuar iluminando la humanidad. Y
por último es la luz que nos envuelve a todos, que a
todos nos une bajo su resplandor. Cristo es el fundamento único de nuestra pertenencia y unidad porque
es el único que nos ha mostrado y amado como Dios.
Por eso es todavía más sangrante que nosotros fundamentemos nuestras divisiones en su persona. Tengamos así especialmente en cuenta este domingo esta
intención, y pidámosla al Espíritu, principio de la
unidad, que nos ilumine con la verdadera y única
Luz: Cristo.
Señor Dios nuestro: En nuestro caminar hacia Ti,
Tú nos has iluminado con la Palabra de tu Hijo. Que
Él nos transforme a su imagen, como luz para el
mundo; que llevemos una chispa de esperanza a donde haya desesperación, un resplandor de alegría a
donde haya tristeza, amor a donde haya indiferencia
o, peor todavía, a donde haya odio y rencor. Te lo
pedimos en el nombre de Jesús nuestro Señor. Amén

Solo para reflexionar...
No siempre es fácil estar alegres. Vivimos momentos muy difíciles en el mundo, en el país y en nuestras
comunidades; muchos incluso, en nuestras propias
familias, seguramente. Encontrar dentro esa luz de la
gloria de Dios que amanece en nosotros podría resultar
complicado. De entre las sombras en las que a veces
parece que vivimos, tenemos que aprender a distinguir
la gloria de toda la presencia de Dios, sus bendiciones
y sus dones. Sobre todo, la gloria de haber sido llamados como sus discípulos. La verdadera alegría es la
seguridad profunda de haber sido alcanzado por Dios
y de estar con El. Puede ser que tal alegría tenga lugar
en medio de un profundo sufrimiento; no están reñidos, aunque parezca lo contrario, porque incluso en el
sufrimiento, se tiene la certeza de la presencia de Dios
que acompaña, apoya, da luz y fuerza.
Como cristianos nuestra misión es trasmitir alegría
y esa gloria de haber alcanzado a Dios, si no haber
sido alcanzado por El. No es posible, dicen algunos
santos ser cristianos tristes. Hemos recibido la alegría
de la salvación y nuestra responsabilidad es entregársela a otros. ¿Cómo se hace esto? Un corazón agradecido no conoce el resentimiento y, por tanto, puede
estar alegre; y esa alegría se nota en los demás.
