Indeed, as we inch forward to 2016, our parish continues to grow and most significantly, this growth reflects the larger Pasadena community itself, including its Hispanic, Filipino, African-American, and Anglo populations, I am profoundly grateful to the leadership provided by these groups, for together they honor, celebrate and embrace the parish’s diversity, and in doing so, they enrich all of us in the name of Almighty God and St. Andrew, our patron. Let us congratulate our Fourth Annual St. Andrew Parish 2015 Vision Award Recipients; Marlene Puccinelli, Debra Jenkins DeBose, Felipe Quezada, Paciencia de Guzman, Maria Medina, Victor & Rosa Roman, Alberto Mendoza& Rosalia Reyes, and Julia Escalera. This award is given in honor of those individuals who best promote our Church’s vision, which is to work tirelessly toward becoming one family, a united family. Moreover, we choose to honor them on December 12th. This day is appropriate precisely because of the spiritual footprints passed down by the two main figures in the narrative of this Feast Day—Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Mother of the Americas as well as the Mother of All, and St. Juan Diego, long a disciple of service and a bridge builder himself. Please join us at the 5:00am Mass on Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Feast Day as we honor the recipients of this award. Procession will begin at 4:30am. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Paul A. Year 1: This month at One Eight we asked the candidates to consider what life would be like if Jesus was not really God? They learned that if Jesus is not God, the world is a dark and broken place. This, however, is not the truth. The truth is that Jesus is God, and the candidates discussed why this is so important for our Church and for us as individuals. They spent time reading through specific Scripture passages in their small groups and discussing how the people in those passages were changed by Christ’s presence in their lives. We challenged the teens to consider if they were allowing themselves to be close enough to Christ for Him to heal them. We closed the session with Eucharistic Adoration. The candidates were challenged to offer up areas of their life that need healing, or areas that they have not yet let Christ in, to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Knowing that Jesus Christ is God makes a positive difference in our lives. Take some time as a parent to reflect on this reality in your own life. Consider praying through the Scripture passages that the candidates used for this session. Those passages are listed below, with a question for reflection for each: • • • • • Luke 17:11-19-Do we come to Christ in prayer only when we need something, or do we constantly seek him? Luke 7:36-50- What example of faith does this woman give us? Matthew 9:27-31- What do you need healing for in your life? Year 2: This month at One Eight we discussed the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. This session is the first of two sessions we will have on these seven gifts. These gifts were all given to us at our Baptism, and are strengthened in the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is important that we understand the role they play in our relationship with Christ and our mission in the world, otherwise we may not realize how to use these gifts effectively. In order to help the candidates understand the effects of each of these gifts, we spent time journaling and reflecting on the four gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and counsel. These four gifts are a great place to start discussion with your son or daughter. Consider using the following questions to discuss this session: • Which of the four gifts that you discussed at One Eight do you feel you need the most in your life right now? Why? • Why are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit important to our Catholic faith? REGISTRATION: Registration for the 2015-2016 Year has ended!
