The Outstanding Government Official award recognizes a government official for support of Metropolitan Library System member libraries. This award recognizes an individual or library for their distinguished and significant contribution to the community. The nominator, Kathleen Miller wrote the following comment: “I am so proud to be working with this young man who puts the people of Posen first and foremost. I can’t imagine any other trustee out there in Illinois that’s more exceptional.” Donald Schnering CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBER! Help us welcome our newest Board member Latoya Trotter! She is a resident of Markham and is passionate about our youth and their education. Ms. Trotter is a library card holder and has taken advantage of our latest feature, patron imaging and digital signature! Happy New Year! Starting off with saying thank you to Fuddruckers restaurant for their generous “Food for Thought” reading program and also, thank you to those who participated, hope you enjoyed your meal. If you are a participant of the Chicago Bears “Tackle Reading Challenge”, the deadline for the “overtime” portion will be February 25, 2010. Don’t forget, all you need to do is read 4 books and write and submit a book report or a short essay on what you’ve read. With that being said, here are children programs to help kick off the New Year. Toddlers Story Time (2-5yrs) Do You Know! (7-11yrs) Every Wednesday starting January 6, 2010 10am February 2, 2010 5pm Can you put a name with a face? Do you know why they are famous for Black History? Arts and crafts, finger play, puppet shows and light snacks. Hot Cocoa Social (7-11yrs) The Peanut Man! (all ages) January 7, 2010 February 4, 2010 5pm 5pm In the winter, the best way to spend your time is with hot chocolate and a good book. Do you know where peanut butter came from? Did you know it’s a part of our Black History? Chicago Wolves Reading Program (8-12yrs) African American Hall of Fame (8-12yrs) Mondays, January 11- February 22, 2010 February 11, 2010 5pm “Come have fun while reading” Minimum of six books have to be completed to receive a prize. MONEY: Kids & Cash (all ages) January 14, 2010 5pm 5pm It’s time to know why our African American are our heroes. Dr. Suessville (all ages) March 2, 2010 It’s time for kids to know to why and how they can earn money. 5pm It is Dr. Seuss birthday and we are here to help him celebrate. Games, sing-along, activities and fun. Happy Birthday Dr. King (all ages) January 16, 2010 2pm We’re celebrating on behalf of Dr. King’s birthday with stories, crafts and birthday fun. Act like a Lady (7-12yrs) March 8, 2010 5pm Do you know how to act like a lady? We will enjoy the fun way of acting like ladies. Money Management: Teaching Kids to Save! (all ages) January 19, 2010 6pm Kids need to be aware about the importance of saving. They will learn to about sharing, saving and spending. 3 Letter Words: ART, BIG, ONE USE 4 Letter Words AWAY, NEXT, TOYS, YEAR 5 Letter Words ACTOR, EATEN, FUNNY, TASTE WORD FIT: Can you fit all the words correctly into the grid? Two have already been entered for you. 7 Letter Words BUFFALO, EXTINCT, NEAREST, STUDENT PROGRAMS AND EVENTS TEEN AFTER HOURS BOOK CLUB (Ages 13-19) JOB READINESS SKILLS 1st & 3rd Monday of the month, 6-7 pm Read the book or plan to. Come once or every time. Free dessert and lemonade! Thursday, January 14th, 6:30 pm Are you ready to work? Let Veronica Thorpe give you the professional development skills you need to enter the work force. Her focus will be on: Job search skills Key words in job advance Interview skills Transition & coping skills Q&A SENIOR COMPUTER CLASS (Ages 56 & older) Every Tuesday of the month, 10:30-12:30 am February classes are now forming with limited space. The following will be taught in four sessions: How to use the mouse and keyboard. Basic windows desktop. How to set up an email account. How to use email and the internet. ADULT COMPUTER CLASS (Ages 18-55) Classes are now forming with limited space. Please call the library for more information. BEGINNER’S CHECKERS (Ages 7-13) Every Tuesday of the month, 4-6 pm Space is limited to 8 people. There will be 6 classes and the last class will compete in a tournament “IT’S SO EASY!” SPANISH FOR BEGINNER’S Tuesdays, Feb 16th & 23rd, Mar 2nd, 9th, & 16th , 6-7:30 pm This is a repeat of the popular class that started in October of last year. Seating is limited so please register as soon as possible! WII WEDNESDAY Youth - Every Wednesday of the month, 6-7 pm Space is limited on a first come first serve basis. There will be a time limit of 20 minutes per party/group. Senior Fitness – Every Wednesday of the month, 10-12 am Choices are bowling, tennis or golf. Light refreshments will be served. BEGINNER’S CHESS (Ages 14 & older) Every Thursday of the month, 6-7 pm Space is limited to 12 people. There will be 6 classes and the last class will compete in a tournament. MOVIE NIGHT The 3rd Thursday of the month, 6pm (In March it will be held on the 4th Thursday) Remember you can bring your own snacks. The movies featured will be: January 21st – Up February 18th – The Wiz March 25th – G-Force TIPS ON WRITING A BETTER RESUME Tuesday, January 20th, 6:30-8 pm Rick Hansen – Senior Writer and Coach for A Better Resume Service/Career Pro, will be at the library to provide guidance and answer questions on writing a professional resume that will stand out from the crowd. Bring a pen and paper to take lots of notes. In addition bring your resume and cover letter for a free evaluation after the workshop! NATIONAL PIE DAY! Saturday, January 23rd When you visit the library and check out a book, you will receive a free slice of pie. One slice of pie per patron. THE LOST ART OF SHOE SHINE Saturday, February 20th, 11 am-2 pm Learn the Seven Easy Steps from 40 Year Master, Cornelius Majied, “Mr. Shine”. The Skill and Art of Shoe Shone is on DVD and can be checked out at the circulation desk. OLADIJI’S DAYCARE PRESENTS: NATIVE AFRICAN DANCE, STORIES, SONGS, APPAREL & FOOD Thursday, February 25th, 6:30 pm Last year was standing room only; make plans to join us this year! HAPPY TO BE NAPPY: THE BASICS OF RETURNING TO NATURAL HAIR Tuesday, March 9, 6:30 pm Join us as Kimberly Joy Brayboy presents the basics of how African American women can return their hair to its natural state. CELEBRATING WOMEN’S MONTH WITH STORYTELLER VELMA GLADNEY Thursday, March 18th, 6:30 pm Velma Gladney is an early childhood educator with a Master’s of Science degree in Education. She uses her storytelling gifts to help young people develop strong imaginations, self-esteem, character and an appreciation for the written word. DRAMATIC PRESENTATION BY CHERYL GATHINGS YOU’RE INVITED TO ENJOY! SPECIAL EVENTS Thursday, March 18th, 6:30 pm Writer-Community Activist-Independent Film Producer and Youth Activist. ADOPT-A-PET Starting March 1st, the library will have one animal on display monthly, for patrons that have not observed the likes of before. Up close and personal, patrons are welcome to come in and observe, touch and gently handle the animals. At the end of each month, essays will be written on the featured animals. After they are collected and reviewed, the essay winner will be awarded the pet to share their home and family with! Fore more details, please inquire at the reference desk. With your support we have made 128 stops, and serviced 510 patrons. Along the way we have processed 50 new library cards, renewed 37 library cards, circulated 1,530 items, and fulfilled countless Inter Library Loans as of November 2009. We have also added material to our Bookmobile collection from requests we have received from patrons. So remember if there is something you would like to see on the Bookmobile shelves, fill out a request sheet and we will get it for you. We now have a new route beginning January 5th, so familiarize yourself with it, and come out to one of our convenient stops with your library card. With the weather getting colder our doors will be closed, however anytime you see the Bookmobile parked, we are ready to serve the community. We look forward to seeing you!
