The Language and People
• 500 million total speakers
• Home language for 12% of U.S. residents
• World’s second highest number of native speakers (after Mandarin Chinese)
• Official language of 21 countries
• Part of the Romance (from Rome) family of languages with French, Italian, Portuguese, etc.
• Also called castellano
• One of nine languages of Spain and 69 of Mexico

Parts of the Sentence
Noun: person, place, thing, idea
Adjective: describes a noun
Adverb: describes verbs, adjectives and other adverbs
El juez viejo habla español, pero no muy bien.
Verb: tells what the subject does or is
Conjunction: and, but, or, so, etc.
Article: a, an, the
The old judge speaks Spanish, but not very well.
