The Lenten Fish Fries! We will be at it for the last three Fridays in February and the first three Fridays in March. We have had a number of planning meetings and a number of our fellow Brothers have been working very hard to make this year's Fish Fries the best yet. We are adding some new features this year. We have a detailed marketing campaign, we are preselling tickets and each of our Knights will be contacted, we have extended the menu, we will have a drive-through service with a call ahead telephone number and we will accept charge cards. What does all of this mean? Your help is needed. Brothers are needed! We start the setup at 3:00 pm. We need people to work in the kitchen and serve the drive-through. Dinner will be served starting at 5:00 pm so we need servers and people to bus the tables, assist our customers who have their hands full and take out the trash. Finally cleanup will begin around 8:00 pm so Brothers are needed to take down the tables and chairs and of course wash the dishes. This is an event where our collective Brotherhood shows the parish our commitment to Christ. We need a lot of help to make this a successful event for St. Brendan's. We are promising Fr. Matthew and the parish that a percentage of our profit will be contributed to the Capital Campaign. Speaking of the Capital Campaign, Fr. Matthew will join us at our monthly meeting on Monday, February 8th to talk to us about the Capital Campaign. We have also invited Fr. Matthew to set up a display at the Fish Fries with the architect's renderings of the building additions to our church and parish. In January, Dick Flaig and I attended the semiannual State Grand Knight and Officers meeting. As usual there is always a big push on increasing membership. Mark McMullen, the State Deputy, laid out the State's expectations: Leadership – work to achieve our goals and grow the Order (worldwide, the Knights now have over 1.9 million members). Communication - - Communication - - Communication – make sure our Council Brothers are aware of what is going on and are asked to lend a hand. Build Spirituality – Fr. Matthew will address our Council on this subject in the spring. The State Training Director, Wally Merchant, announced a new initiative that comes from Supreme. We have to strengthen both our parishes and our Catholic families in all that we do. Scott Read, our State Membership Director, told us we need to recruit younger men. He also reiterated that all of us are part of the recruiting team that, in our case, is headed by Doug Hoffman. Scott pointed out: 88% of members join the Order to get involved with their church. 90% of those who lapse did so because no one called them and asked for their help. Keep in mind every new member has a sponsor. The sponsor needs to mentor the new Knights and help the new Knight get involved. 70% of Georgia Knights are over 50 years old. Active members of a Council have achieved higher degrees and have KofC Insurance. PAGE 4 K NI G HTS NAV I G AT OR V OLU ME 8 , ISSUE 2 (Continued from page 2) (Continued from page 3) Finally, Brad Barnett, the State's Director of KofC Charities, told us that thus far in this Colombian year, the State has donated over $123,000 to various charities! We are a vibrant organization and we (St. Brendan's Council 12942) have a lot of determination to make our Council, our parish and our Catholic families better in all that we do. As we spread Fr. McGivney’s dream to each and every eligible Catholic man we reach into a new segment of the community. Fr. McGivney vision was an army of Catholic men who would provide for those in need. Make sure that you have developed and practiced your personal “elevator pitch” of the great works of our Council to share with prospective members. My goal is to have our current Knights recruit six new Knights from the eligible men that we meet during the Lenten Fish Fries. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of your elected officers for assistance. We are here to serve you and our Council. We are striving to make this the best year ever for our Council and to be continually recognized as a Star Council. Here are some statements to get you thinking of what to say when you meet a Catholic man at St. Brendan’s church. Why you should become a Knight? If you’re interested in helping those in need, serving your parish, growing in your faith or having exclusive access to top rated insurance protection for your family, then the Knights of Columbus is the organization for you. Becoming a Knight of Columbus can transform your life. As a Knight, you have the opportunity to support your parish, give back to your community, grow in your faith and gain exclusive access to our top rated insurance program to protect your family. These are just some of the reasons to become a Knight. We are a band of brothers, a network of men in communities around the world dedicated to doing good in the service of God and our neighbor. As we begin our 135th year of operation, we are proud to say that we offer a complete portfolio of protection to our members – a portfolio that we think is our best yet, with high quality, customizable products designed to fit your family’s needs and budget. Permanent Life Insurance – Insure Your Life for Life Permanent Life Insurance is our signature product. Why? Because it provides guaranteed protection for your loved ones until the day you die. And, while you’re still alive, it builds cash value. It’s the total package. Permanent Life Insurance is a great solution for many basic needs, such as final expenses, income replacement, and debt protection, and it can also serve specialized purposes such as estate planning and charitable giving. Whatever the planned use, permanent life insurance is reliable. It will be there when you won’t be, regardless of when that happens. Put simply: as long as you pay your premiums, when you die, whenever you die, your beneficiaries will receive the guaranteed death benefit (if not more) that you established for them. Term Life Insurance – Affordable Protection for Temporary Needs Sometimes in life, our financial obligations are temporary, and that’s where term insurance brings the most value. Like permanent insurance, term insurance provides a death benefit to beneficiaries, but only within the specific term period.Maybe we have a 30-year mortgage. Maybe we have 10 years left until retirement. Maybe we have two children who are about to go through college. In time, the mortgage will be paid off, retirement will arrive at last, and the kids will finish college. Once those days come, your insurance needs will change. These types of temporary needs are what term insurance is made for. Term can provide extra protection at affordable rates that – if structured properly – will go away once the needs themselves go away. The Knights of Columbus offers two basic types of term insurance – annual renewable term, and level term (which is offered in 10, 15, and 20 year periods). Retirement Annuities – Retirement income you can count on. Guaranteed. During our working lives, there are probably few financial matters we give more thought and attention to than our retirement. We want to make sure that once we finally stop working, we don’t have to stop living the way we want to. Retirement income can be a tricky thing to calculate, especially with a changing landscape of federal and employee-provided benefits. But, with a properly structured retirement annuity from the Knights of Columbus, you can have retirement income that you cannot outlive, guaranteed. It’s peace of mind that most of us hope to achieve. The Knights offers a variety of annuities to members and their families, including traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and non-qualified, which are available as both single premium and flexible premium annuities. Long-Term Care Insurance – Protect your assets. Get quality care. Prepare for the future. While life expectancies have been improving steadily, living longer may very well mean needing more care. Statistics show that nearly 70 percent of individuals over the age of 65 will require at least some type of long-term care services during their lifetime.* Those services are becoming more and more expensive. On average, nursing home care can cost upwards of $83,000 per year, while at-home care can cost more than $60,000 per year.* Yet most regular health insurance plans or government assistance programs do not provide sufficient coverage for long-term care needs. Long-term care insurance from the Knights of Columbus helps mitigate that risk by helping you cover your costs. Knights of Columbus Long-Term Care policies are customizable to fit your needs, and come in two basic forms: comprehensive coverage, which covers you in a nursing home or at home; and facility-only coverage, which covers you in a nursing home only. Disability Income Insurance – Receive an income even when you can’t work. A lot of us know about disability insurance, and many of us even have it, and yet it’s chronically misunderstood. Many people receive disability coverage from their employer, yet they don’t know too much about the particulars. Is it short-term disability? Is it longterm disability? Is it both? Does it cover your entire salary or only part? How much? Yet despite the confusion, disability income insurance provides critical protection to families, especially those who rely on their paychecks to pay the bills. That’s why the Knights of Columbus introduced Disability Income Insurance in 2011. Now Knights and their families have a trusted provider to turn to help protect their paychecks from the unexpected.
