In 2010, UNESCO declared Flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This folk music received influence of gypsy culture, however, some might claim that the Moors introduction of a guitar like instrument. 3.1 Features A typical flamenco performance includes guitar, singer and dancer. The guitar playing is virtuosic and accompanies the dancing and singing. Traditionally, the guitar plays a supporting role to the singers and dancers, who are considered to be the main performers of any flamenco show. Whether played solo or in an accompaniment role, all flamenco guitar is based on a range of traditional dance rhythms. Fast scale runs are a characteristic feature of flamenco guitar playing. The singer’s voice is untrained and has a harsh, nasal tone (influence of the Moors). The singer sings with intervals smaller than the semitone (microtonality). The dancer interprets the mood of the song. Flamenco dance is known for its emotional intensity, proud carriage, use of the arms and rhythmic stamping of the feet. The rhythm of the plays is complicated. It includes the foot work of the dancer, hand clapping (palmeo), castanets and shouts of encouragement (jaleo). A traditional concert has only a singer and one guitar while a dance concert usually includes two or three guitars, one or more singers singing solo in turn and one or more dancers. One of the singers may play the cajón, a wooden box drum played with the hands or else it may be played by a percussionist. Flamenco music uses the descending Phrygian mode (E-E) which is sad in character. Andalusian cadence: 3º ESO, Tema 3.
