The Eucharist: Banquet of Life or Happy Meal?
McDonald’s, one of the world’s most successful fast food chains, has become a true icon
of contemporary culture. I was tempted to say “American culture” but McDonald’s has
evangelized the whole world so that now people of every land and nation are hungering
for hamburgers and fries. An icon, as we know, is a symbol of something much more
than itself. McDonald’s symbolizes the triumph of convenience over conviviality, of
what feels good over what is good. What do I mean? Judging from my own experience, one eats at
McDonald’s to save time and money, not to spend more time and money over conversations with family
or friends. One devours hamburgers and fries not because they are good for you (which they are really
not) but because they taste good. Adults like myself stop by McDonald’s to make every minute count and
to make ends meet. Parents take their children and teens take themselves there because children and teens
like it. It feels good. It’s cool. Everyone says they are happy with their “Happy Meal.” But are they truly
fed?
This “McDonald’s mentality” may help us understand the attitude some of us have toward the Mass. This
attitude might be called “minimalist.” The goal is to find a mass that is quick, cheap, and fits into my busy
schedule. This is by no means new since, growing up in the 40s and 50s, I knew many a Catholic who
sought out a “quickie” mass. Then as now, there were lots of folks who bolted for the exits long before
the final blessing. Priests and nuns didn’t intend this but they taught how to go to mass out of a textbook
that told you precisely what you had to do to fulfill the Sunday Mass Obligation. It worked when the culture was predominantly one of law and order, and where the greatest behavioral problem facing schools
was chewing gum (as we learned at the recent Youth Ministry evening!) Once this culture was altered
by the “feel good” mentality of the 70s and 80s, many Catholics simply stopped going to mass because “it
didn’t feel good.”
The church never intended to promote this minimalist attitude. The goal of Vatican II was to move Catholics beyond a legalistic, minimalistic view of mass toward one characterized by the word “fullness:” the
full expression and understanding of what is happening, full participation in the action of the liturgy, and a
full living out of the meaning of the Eucharist. An example of this “fullness” approach was the reintroduction of receiving the Eucharist under the form of both bread and wine. The teaching of Vatican II, reflecting both a more ancient and a more developed grasp of the Eucharist and priesthood, called for liturgy to
make available to all God’s people the fullest manner of participation. When it came to looking at how we
receive the Eucharist, the Church took forward the recommendation of Vatican II and expressed its view
in this text approved by Pope John Paul II in 2004: “So that the fullness of the sign may be made more
clearly evident to the faithful in the course of the Eucharistic banquet, lay members of Christ’s faithful,
too, are admitted to Communion under both kinds, in the cases set forth in the liturgical books, preceded
and continually accompanied by proper catechesis … (emphasis added).”
As we prepare to celebrate the Holy Triduum and Easter, the centerpiece of the liturgical year, I invite you
to read the insert in today’s bulletin aimed at encouraging full and reverent reception of the Eucharist. My
hope and prayer is that we bring to these sacred days and rites a hunger for the Eucharist as the banquet of
life, enriched by everything we can bring to it to savor the company of the Lord and our sisters and brothers in faith. Jesus invites us to dine with him at a lavish feast of word and sacrament. We have a choice:
to come mass as the Banquet of Life or to come to it as McDonald’s Happy Meal: quick, easy, convenient, and (to as Burger King says) having it my way.

About The Catholic Faith
On each of the last 30 Good Fridays, people in Peabody have
walked to raise funds for the
poorest people in the western
hemisphere: Haiti. Last year,
$11,261. went directly to expand
a clinic and to help support teachers. The Walk
begins at 9:00 AM on Friday, April 14th at the
outdoor track of the Community Life Center, 79
Central Street. All can join in. Walk or make a
money pledge to support someone who is. Take a
flyer at the back of the church; or call Gail Bowlds
at 978-535-1431.
This is a core adult Catholic beliefs class which
serves two groups of people. First, it is designed
for those individuals who have been baptized and
received 1st Communion in the Catholic Church,
but have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is also an introductory course for those
persons who have been considering coming into
the Roman Catholic faith. This can be for RCIA
participants (both unbaptized and baptized), or for
any person who simply wants to inquire about becoming a Roman Catholic. Both lecture and group
discussion are a part of this program. There are
twelve consecutive weeks of class, starting in June
(all Tuesday evenings, from 7 PM to 8:15 PM) and
ending on September 5. Please contact Deacon
Leo Martin or Fr. John MacInnis. For more information and registration call 978-826-7515.
Adult Faith Formation Series
The last lecture in this year’s adult Faith Formation series, co-sponsored by the Boston College
Department of Theology and affiliated North
Shore chapters of the Voice of the Faithful, will
be held on Sunday, April 9th in the parish hall of
St. Mary’s Church, 8 S. Common Street, Lynn.
Rev. Michael Himes, PhD, of the Boston College
Department of Theology, will consider “How
does the Holy Spirit continually renew the
Church?” He will consider documents from Vatican II, especially as they speak of the Spirit engaging the laity. Father Himes will lead the discussion afterwards. For more information call

Fifth Sunday of Lent
It’s cool.
