Se pt emb er 30 , 2 012 — T WE NT Y- SIX TH SUNDAY IN ORD INARY TIME SA IN T MA RGA R E T MA RY A LAC OQU E We are Catholic Christians striving to love beyond all boundaries and to continue the mission of Christ. He who remains in Love remains in God, and God in him. - 1 John 4:16 A MESSAGE FROM MSGR. MARC 2 T he work of a prophet is to be the voice of God in a world with many contrary voices. A prophetic witness is often disturbing. It reminds us of who we are called to be. It challenges us to make the changes necessary to become what God created. It condemns and offers hope at the same time. It is rarely welcome but always necessary. D uring this past year, many of you have read the story of St. Margaret Mary that was published serially in this Bulletin. She was neither famous nor rich. She lived in obscurity, cloistered in a convent in southeastern France. She never became a leader in her community. In fact, her superiors wondered what benefit she brought to the community. She never moved from her convent after entering and died at the age of 43 in 1690. But this unknown nun was to give the world a gift that few, even of the saints, have been able to share, that is her relationship with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Monday, October 1 Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus Reading 1: Job 1:6-22 Gospel: Luke 9:46-50 Friday, October 5 Reading 1: Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5 Gospel: Luke 10:13-16 Saturday, October 6 Reading 1: Job 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17 Gospel: Luke 10:17-24 Tuesday, October 2 Memorial of the Guardian Angels Reading 1: Job 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23 Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10 Wednesday, October 3 Reading 1: Job 9:1-12, 14-16 Gospel: Luke 9:57-62 T he Sacred Heart shared with Margaret Mary a message of God’s love; that he would give us the graces necessary for our lives, he would console us in trials, be assured refuge in life and death, shed abundant blessings on all our understandings, be an infinite ocean of mercy to the sinner, make fervent the souls of the lukewarm in faith and bring the fervent to perfection. He would bless those who are devoted to him and move the hardest of hearts. It is this message that God continues to declare through the image of the Sacred Heart as shared with this simple nun, this prophet among us. Sunday, October 7 Reading 1: Genesis 2:18-24 Reading 2: Hebrews 2:9-11 Gospel: Mark 10:2-16 Thursday, October 4 Saint Francis of Assisi Reading 1: Job 19:21-27 Gospel: Luke 10:1-12 MENSAJE DE MSGR. Matthew Fox suggests that “we fall in love several times a day for the rest of our loves. You could fall in love with the galaxy – there are a trillion out there!” (How many of us were thrilled and touched as we saw the Endeavor fly over our homes!) “You could fall in love with fish and plants, animals and birds, and with people, especially those who are different from us.” Treat each situation as though you were head over heels in love. It was said of the early Christian communities - see how they love one another. 75 years is a number and a history we are proud of, yet as churches and parishes go - we are but youngsters. It’s early in our SMM parish history, can we say - see how we love one another? Does it show? Does the greater Lomita/ South Bay community see our love as visible and tangible? For your Journal ♥ If we could do anything as a parish, what would it be? ♥ How do we see our mission for the next 75 years? Remember the acronym for mission: Moving In Spirit Seeing Into Others’ Needs Write it in your journal ♥ WE END OUR JUBILEE YEAR HONORING ST. MARGARET MARY AND THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS WITH THIS VERY SPECIAL 9 DAY NOVENA BEGINNING THIS COMING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 7:00 pm ENDING ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 PLEASE JOIN US! O U R F A I T H I N A C T I O N 5 WHAT ST. MARGARET MARY MEANS TO ME by Pat Arnett I was raised in a post WW II Catholic Community filled with ex GIs who decided to settle in California. These faithful, energetic, and dedicated people from all walks of life set about building churches, halls and schools. I was raised in this environment and considered these individuals heroes, and as I grew, friends, who eventually became adopted aunts and uncles to my own children. Their "can do" attitude was a model of success to us. So when my husband and I married and moved four times in five years, we searched for the same model parish. Our list was short: a parish where the sacraments were central, a warm and welcoming people, and a home where we could raise a family. Needless to say Fairbanks, Phoenix and San Francisco were fine, just not home. So, you can imagine our joy when we were led to St. Margaret Mary on a Sunday, as I think, the 11:30 am Mariachi Mass. While not fluent in Spanish, the songs and the 6 piece band brought back a flood of memories from growing up in San Diego. We were greeted with many smiles and welcomes before and after Mass, and we wanted to see more. The bulletin directed me to attended my first Women’s Society Meeting and while there I was not allowed to sit alone for long as Joyce Schroeder and Shirley Lavezzari invited me to join them; our life at St. Margaret Mary took off. I joined St. Anthony’s Guild, Women’s Society, taught Confirmation Classes, as Joe sang in the 10 am choir, joined the Holy Name Society and counted the collection on Sundays. Later we both served on the school parent board, and along the way met and embraced wonderful, faithful people who became key parts of our family and our children’s lives. There was that “can do“ attitude of offering new events or revamping old. More than anything, I remember Sunday Mass, and the community spirit led by our priests that encouraged us to warmly welcome the person in the next pew as a new friend and parishioner. Our parish continues to be innovating by responding to our people’s needs, such as presenting the first St. Peregrines Mass for Cancer patients, survivors, and family and opening it to the entire South Bay. Joe and I had reached our goal: we had found the rich, faith filled family. And when I visited my family in San Diego and mentioned my “faith home” it was well understood that I meant St. Margaret Mary. St. Margaret Mary Jubilee Mass On Sunday, October 14th at 1 pm Saint Margaret Mary will celebrate our 75th Anniversary Mass with Archbishop Gomez, Cardinal Mahoney, Bishop Joe and a number of our former Priests. Because of this special celebration, there will be no 11 am, 12:30 pm Spanish, and 5 pm Sunday Masses. The Mass will bi-lingual so all may participate. There will be a reception following the Mass. 6 E S P I R I T U A L ¿MIRAMOS CON INTENCIONES TORCIDAS? In the coming Year of Faith (Oct. 2012 – Nov. 2013), the Holy Father calls all Catholics around the world to deepen their knowledge of faith in order to become more effective doers and evangelizers of the Word. “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” Sending pictures over the Internet is something that children do all the time. Photo-messaging on cell phones is no different. Children need to be aware why all pictures are not appropriate to send. They also need to know that if they receive a message or image that makes them uncomfortable, they should immediately tell you or another trusted adult. For a helpful pamphlet on cell phone safety, please visit the National Crime Prevention Council website at www.ncpc.org, and click on “cell phone safety.” For particular help, call Assistance Ministry (213) 637-7650.
