STEWARDSHIP
“When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,
his heart was moved with pity for them,
for they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.”
Mark 6: 34
Sheep are among the most defenseless animals, and
they are completely dependent upon the shepherd to feed
them or lead them to food and water; to keep them from
wandering aimlessly; and to protect them because they
are so vulnerable. In today’s Gospel the Lord recognizes
that the people are “sheep without a shepherd” and He
begins to teach them. He is feeding them with the word
of God. The Hebrew word for “shepherding” can also be
translated “feeding.” Jesus calls us to serve as shepherds
for those around us, just as He shepherds us. It is this
stewardship of our family, friends, co-workers, and others
which allows us to show the love we are expected to
demonstrate. - See more at www.catholicsteward.com/

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENT
HOLY FAMILY HOUSE NEEDS YOUR TIME
For years now, St. Sabina Parish has built a relationship
with Holy Family Catholic Worker House, sending volunteers every month to help prepare and serve a meal to
the homeless in Kansas City. While we have taken a
break for the summer, we do start back up in August and
need more volunteers! Every third Saturday of the month
we carpool to Holy Family House, leaving Belton at 4pm
and returning around 8pm. If you can help in this ministry
of feeding the hungry, contact Terri Standley at 816-2775250 or [email protected]. Holy Family House is also
always in need of items such as: plastic cups (like from
QuickTrip) and cloth napkins to reuse each meal, white
socks (gently used is OK), and hygiene products. You can
bring these donations to the parish office or leave them in
the donation box on the South side of the gathering
space.
VBS SET UP THANKS
Thank you to Nancy Ruffini, Barb Rewald, Sarah Hagemann, Calvin, Jaeden, Justin and Austin for all your help
in preparing for Vacation Bible School this year. Your efforts helped to make this another great year for VBS!

LIVING STONES
Foundations for Living Stones
A Faith Formation Program for interested Adults
“Come to him, a living stone...chosen and precious
in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourself be built into a spiritual house...” (1 Peter 2:4-5)
St. Sabina, a Catholic faith community committed to
total and lifelong faith formation, is offering an adult
faith formation program titled, Foundations for Living
Stones. The program explores in greater depth and
knowledge the basics of our faith. All the sessions
focus on the ministry that we are called to in and
through our baptism. Communication skills, group
development, leadership skills, bible study, church
history, prayer and sacraments are some of the
many areas explored and examined in depth. Adult
methods of learning and reflection are employed
throughout.
The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday evenings,
from 7-9:30 PM, beginning in late August and ending
in late May. This is a 9-month commitment to deepen one’s skills and knowledge so as to become a
more effective and engaging minister. We hope to
work collaboratively with our neighboring parishes,
inviting them to be part of this mutual learning process. For a brochure or more information, please
call or e-mail either Kris or Biagio at:

were collected. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus
for sponsoring the blood drive and thanks to Michael
Dailey for coordinating it.
2016 DELEGATION TO EL SALVADOR
Our parish will be taking its second delegation to El
Salvador to learn more about the scholarship program there and to have the opportunity to meet and
visit with our scholarship students and their families.
We will travel to Cinquera and also to El Mozote. El
Mozote was the sight of one of many massacres that
occurred in El Salvador during their Civil War. As of
now we are planning to travel to El Salvador on January 5 and staying approximately 8 days. If you are
interested or would like more information, please
contact Kris at 816-979-3151 or by email at
[email protected].

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
REFLECTION ON THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME , YEAR B
The sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B, sets
the context for the next five Sundays. In today's gospel,
Jesus and his disciples set time aside for rest. In doing
so, they become aware of the large crowd following
them. Jesus looks upon them with pity, for they are like
sheep without a shepherd. Reaching out to them, he
desires to address their needs, modeling himself on
God, the Good Shepherd whose qualities are extolled in
Responsorial Psalm 23.
This desire to care for, teach, and feed God's people
sets the stage for the exploration of John's "Bread of
Life" discourse. From the Seventeenth to the Twentyfirst Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, the semicontinuous reading of Mark is interrupted with the
proclamation of John chapter 6, the "Bread of Life"
discourse. Since the discourse did not appear in any of
the three year lectionary cycles, the lectionary
committee inserted it here so that we could hear and
reflect on it for five successive Sundays. More on this in
the following weeks.
descendant of David whose ministry
is to “do what is just and right in the
land.”
The second reading from the letter
to the Ephesians specifies how
Jesus, David’s “righteous shoot,”
acted with love, concern and justice towards all.
Through his willingness to give of himself totally for
others, Jesus unites us to God and to one another,
establishing peace, breaking down boundaries, enacting
forgiveness and reconciliation, and drawing us near to
the Father in the Spirit. As disciples, we too are called
to be David’s “righteous shoot,” modeling ourselves on
Jesus, ministering to others as good shepherds should.
Last week’s gospel had Mark’s Jesus commission
his disciples to preach, teach and heal in his name.
Today’s gospel has them return, reporting to Jesus their
ministerial success. Jesus counsels them to take time
to regroup from their ministry to a “deserted place” for
renewal and recommitment.
Yet, Jesus and the
disciples’ ministry has caught the attention of the crowd
who would not allow them quiet and peace. Jesus,
moved by the people’s desire to experience good
shepherding, begins “to teach them many things.” This
was not merely an intellectual exercise, but a practical
one in which the criteria of a good shepherd, which the
other three reading delineate, was made manifest for all
to see.
Today’s readings focus on being good shepherds
modeled on Jesus who takes his cue from the image of
God articulated in Psalm 23. Here God is imaged as
the one who provides, guides and walks with us no
matter the dangers. The good shepherd knows the
sheep. They can trust and depend on the shepherd no
matter what comes. Such covenant relationship leads to
peace and to a desire to dwell with the shepherd
always. Today, we too can joyfully sing the refrain from In Baptism we commit ourselves to continue the
Responsorial Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; mission and ministry of Jesus by building up God's

RCIA
ST. SABINA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
OF ADULTS – 2015-2016 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA, is a process which welcomes
all who are interested in becoming Catholic, or any
Catholic wishing to deepen their understanding of the
faith. The Rite involves the formation of a community
that learns, shares, builds community and prays together to deepen their relationship to God and to the
parish family. During the next few weeks, we will be
asking if you are aware of anyone who would benefit
from participation in this faith learning process. Below
are some of the values that we hold as Catholic Christians, which we readily share with all who desire to
journey with us through the RCIA.
WHY BE CATHOLIC? The Catholic Church has consistently believed that God has a universal will and desire to save all people. Our God is the God of all people. God has initiated this love relationship with all creation and desires to bring all to fullness through total
union with God for all eternity. Each one is called to
union with God through the faith path and tradition that
they feel God is leading them.
If this is so, then why be Catholic? One is Catholic, not
because it is the only way to God, but because one
feels attracted to the things that the Catholic tradition
offers. One feels at home more in the Catholic tradition
than in other faith traditions. The following list is meant
to highlight some of those aspects of the Catholic tradition that have attracted others to it.
Catholics are not the only ones that value these qualities. Nor have we been consistent in following through
on them. But, no matter the history, we seem to have
held onto these values rather consistently.
See if these are values and attractions for you.
1. We affirm a belief in the goodness of all creation.
2. We have a universal sense of openness to all people and all cultures.
3. We affirm that we are all called to holiness.
4. We are committed to continual growth as persons.
5. We are challenged to change the world and society
into the reign of God.
6. We are called to live in community.
7. We have historical roots and identity.
8. We respect reason, human knowledge and human
exploration.
If you or anyone you know would be attracted to these
values, please share this with them. Please fill out the
contact information sheet located in the gathering
space and we will personally contact and invite all
those interested to our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults) Meal which will be held on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 at 6:00pm.

Green drinks refer to an entire category of juices
from barley, wheatgrass, magma, or any other
combination of whole green foods, including
spinach, broccoli, parsley, and virtually any other
healthy green thing that grows. Green drinks pack
an incredible nutritional wallop and have an amazing
amount of phytonutrients. Green drinks are very
alkalizing. The pH balance is very important for all
living things. Alkalizing green drinks help correct and
balance a diet that is higher in meat protein. Use
green drinks as a stand-alone energy boost, or in
combination with solid foods.
Be creative and find a combination that works for
you. Get a blender and start your day out right!
