Christian Stewardship—Talent
The past few weeks, I have been reflecting on the theme of
Christian Stewardship. Often when we hear that phrase in the
Catholic Church, our thoughts immediately go to the treasure
part—or money. That is certainly part of Stewardship, but it is by
no means the whole story.
Last week I reflected on the topic of time. This week I want to
ponder talent. Every single one of us has been made in the image
and likeness of God. Every single one of us, has been made the
way God wants us to be made and we are a part of His image; we
reflect Him in our very being. Likewise, by virtue of our divine
creation, from the moment of our conception, God implanted
within us various abilities. Once we are born, those abilities begin
to mature and we begin to see them demonstrated in the way that
children play with one another, the kinds of things that they are
attracted to, etc. These abilities/talents are uniquely ours (though
they may resemble others). No one else has the same personality
we have, therefore no one else can offer these talents/abilities in
the way we do. The more we exercise these gifts/talents, the
more we feel satisfied, excited, energized. Why? Because we are
doing and accomplishing the very thing that God gave us to do/
accomplish. We are content and, if we are practicing our abilities
correctly, our talents are also helping others. Again, because we
are made in the image and likeness of God. God ALWAYS
blesses; always gives life. So when we do what it is that God
gave us the ability to do for our good as well as the good of
others, we are blessing others as well as ourselves. “For
everything is from you, and we only give you what we have
received from you” (I Chronicles 29:14-16). When we place our
abilities/talents at the service of others, we call that ministry.
“Ministry is about gifts and needs. We name and nurture the
gifts God has given us; we place these gifts at the service of
those in need. Ministries are many in number and find expression
in the areas of worship, education, community, social justice,
leadership, and evangelization. The Epistle of St. Peter reminds
us, ‘As each one has received a gift, use it to serve another as
good stewards of God’s varied graces’ (I Peter 4:10). A theology
of ministry and service emphasizes that it is not so much that we
do things for others but rather Jesus is doing something for others
through us. Being aware of the difference between ‘for’ and
‘through’ changes our whole manner of service. That is why
prayer is so important: it keeps reminding us that all stewardship
is ultimately the work of the Lord taking place through actions of
faithful disciples” (Bishop Robert Morneau, Auxiliary
Emeritus of the Diocese of Green Bay, WI).
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds the Apostles that being
a Christian is not about who is first, but rather, how we
serve.
Christ the Good Shepherd come to our aid.

nacemos, esas habilidades comienzan a madurar y empezar a
multiforme gracia de Dios’ (I Pedro 4:10).

Father
You send us your humble servant Pope Francis. His
example has given light to our eyes and joy to our hearts.
His words are, “Love is our Mission,” and we rejoice to
hear it.
Grant that we hear this in our hearts, speak it aloud
without fear and strive to imitate its promise in our nation.
May the seed sown by the Pope’s visit produce fruit beyond
measure.
May the Vicar of Jesus bring praise to
you Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and
God forever and ever.
Amen
Padre,
Amen

Canonization of Junipero Serra
Currently there are three native born
saints and another nine who labored and
died within the United States.
On September 23rd Pope Francis will
canonize Blessed Junipero Serra, O.F.M. (1713-1784) at the
National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. (Watch or
listen @ 2:15 pm on EWTN TV or KSHJ 1430 AM radio) He
was a Franciscan missionary from Spain who arrived in
California to set up Catholic missions. It was very difficult
and often met with distrust and violence among the native
peoples. He labored in California for about 15 years serving
as leader and father to the Franciscan missionaries and
those who converted to Christianity.
We have a local organization named after Blessed Junipero
Serra called The Serra Club. Serrans accept as their
responsibility the promotion of vocations to the priesthood
and religious life (www.serrainternational.org). For more
information about the Bl. Junipero Serra and his upcoming
canonization go to: (http://catholicexchange.com/thenewest-american-saint-junipero-serra-apostle-ofcalifornia).
