WELCOME FROM THE PTA CO-PRESIDENTS
W
elcome to the 2013-2014 school year!
We hope that you all enjoyed the time
off over the summer with your families
and friends. As you settle into the new school year, there are
quite a few changes that have occurred. The new structure
of the sixth grade class at Eastview begins its inaugural
year. Mr. Cloherty and his staff have worked hard to make
sure that all of the students have a smooth transition into
middle school despite the construction and usual jitters of
moving up from elementary school. The 7th and 8th grade
students are settling into Highlands under the direction of
our new principal, Mr. Ernie Spatafore, who is a veteran staff
member and administrator in the district. While we recognize
that there are some transitions this year, the PTA remains
steadfast in our mission to provide support for parents,
teachers and students.
This is the perfect opportunity to remain involved in
your child’s education and continue to support the programs
and events that help to enrich all of our students’ lives. We
encourage you to come to our meetings. The dates will be
posted on the school and PTA websites.
Attending PTA meetings is the best way to learn
about new educational standards, fundraising, volunteer
opportunities and to meet the teachers and staff. We also
have excellent guest speakers who deliver information on
many topics such as cyber bullying and internet safety,
financial workshops for youths, and Naviance workshops to
name a few.
As we continue to grow as a school community, we
welcome suggestions on how to enhance our PTA. We are
excited to get to work this year and invite you all to join
us on our continued journey towards providing enriching
experiences for all of our middle school students!

Introducing Our New Dean of Students, Ms. Maria Morelli
H
i Highlands families, my
name is Maria Morelli and I
am serving as the newly
created postion of the Dean of
Students. This position was created
to help ensure student success and
positive behavior both in and out of
the classroom by focusing on implementing positive
interventions. I am joining our school community from
the New York City Department of Education where I
taught physical education, health education and served
as the Dean of Students. It is my goal to combine my
experience with the excellence of the classroom
teachers and staff to ensure that every student has a
safe, supported and successful school year. I will be
co-leading our building PBIS (Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports) program which prepares
our students to be respectful, organized, accepting and
responsible citizens. I will be working closely with the
grade team teachers and support staff by facilitating
mediations and other interventions to foster positive
student behavior and respectful relationships. I believe
it is important to encourage consistent and effective
communication between home and school.
I look forward to meeting each student as the
year progresses and working together to maintain a safe
and orderly school environment.

T
ime flies! It seems like just
yesterday we were meeting
the incoming 5th grade
students, having the family picnic
and the 6th grade transition day.
(Mr. Dixon is still complaining
about the temperature of the dunk tank!).
As you read this, your children have learned to
navigate the building, have learned to open their lock with
assistance (hopefully) and have begun to learn the intricacies
of the academic program as well as the after school activities.
Open House has occurred as well as the first P.T.A.
meeting. (Whew! No wonder they are so tired when they get
home). What’s next?

Wednesday, October 16 from 10:00 am to 10:45 am in Room
261 at Highlands. Parents and guardians are invited to attend
and discuss issues related to the Middle School. Please

Visual Reasoning Enrichment

Visual Reasoning Enrichment is off to a collaborative
start at Eastview this year. To become acquainted and
to be prepared to work together, we interviewed one
classmate and then introduced that person to the whole
class. We found that we share many things in common,
and we discovered lots of interesting features among our
new Eastview classmates. Expect creative and inventive
projects from this sixth grade group!

Visual será en Eastview este año. Para familiarizarnos unos
con otros entrevistaremos a esa persona y paso seguido
la presentaremos a toda la clase. Hemos encontrado que
tenemos muchas cosas en común, y a su ves descubierto

ienvenidos al año Escolar del 2013-2014!
Esperamos halla usted disfrutado de un lindo
verano con sus familiares y amigos. Mientras
nos acostumbramos al nuevo año escolar, hay algunos cambios
que han acontecido. Las nuevas estructuras de sexto grado en
Eastview empezo su año inaugural. El Señor Coherty y su
grupo han trabajado con mucho esfuerzo para lograr que todos
los estudiantes tengan una transición placentera a la escuela
intermedia , muy a pesar de la construcción y del nerviosismo
que provoca el dejar la escuela elementaria. Los alumnos de
7mo y 8vo grado están acostumbrándose bajo la dirección del
Director el Sr. Ernie Spatafore quien es veterano miembro
del personal y en la administración del distrito. Mientras
reconocemos que hay grandes cambios este año, el PTA se
mantiene firme en la misión de proveer apoyo a nuestros
padres, maestros y estudiantes. Es la oportunidad perfecta
para mantenerse involucrado en la educación de su hijo y
continuar apoyando los programas y eventos que ayudan a
enriquecer la vida de nuestros estudiantes. Les recomendamos
asistir a nuestras reuniones las fechas estarán anunciadas en
la pagina web de la escuela y en la pagina web del PTA. Es
la mejor manera de informarnos sobre los nuevos estándares
educativos, recaudaciones, oportunidades de voluntario y
conocer a los maestros y al personal. También tendremos
como invitados excelentes oradores que nos brindaran
información sobre temas como el acoso cibernético, la
seguridad en el internet, talleres de finanzas para los jóvenes,
talleres de Naviance por nombrar algunos. Así como vamos
creciendo como comunidad escolar le damos la bienvenida
a nuevas sugerencias para mejorar nuestro PTA. Estamos
muy entusiasmados de empezar a trabajar este año escolar
y los invitamos a unirse a esta jornada que continua para
proporcionarle experiencias enriquecedoras a todos y cada
uno de nuestros estudiantes.

Presentamos Nuestro Nuevo Decano de los Estudiantes, la Sra. María

Highlands, mi nombre es
Maria Morelli y estoy
sirviendo en la nueva posición creada
de Decano Estudiantil. Esta posición
fue creada para asegurar tanto el
éxito como un comportamiento
positive dentro y fuera de los salones de clase,
utilizando intervenciones positivas. Me uno a nuestra
comunidad escolar desde El Departamento de
Educación de la Ciudad de Nueva York donde enseñe
Educación Física, Educación de la Salud y serví
como Decano Estudiantil. Es mi meta combinar mis
experiencias con la prominencia de los maestros y el
personal de nuestra escuela para asegurar que cada
estudiante tenga un año escolar lleno de seguridad,
apoyo y éxito. Estaré co-liderando nuestro programa
PBIS que por sus siglas significan P positivo B conducta
I intervención S apoyo, el cual prepara a nuestros
estudiantes ser respetuosos, organizados, dóciles y
responsables. Estaré trabajando muy de cerca con la
maestra a cargo de cada Grado y el personal de apoyo
facilitando mediaciones y otras intervenciones para
fomentar una conducta positive y respetuosa entre los
estudiantes. Creo que es súper importante fomentar
consistente y efectivamente la comunicación entre
la casa y la escuela. Estoy ansiosa de conocer a cada
estudiante a medida que avance el año escolar y
trabajemos juntos para mantener un entorno ordenado y
seguro en la escuela.

Familiar y de la transición de los
estudiantes del 6to Grado.

Cuando este usted leyendo esto, sus hijos ya habrán
aprendido a movilizarse en el plantel. Habrán aprendido
como abrir sus casilleros sin asistencia alguna y habrán
empezado a comprender sus asignaturas al igual que las
actividades que tenemos después de las horas de escuela.
La Jornada a puertas abiertas y la primera reunión
del P.T.A. ya se habrán realizado.
(Whew! Ya entiendo porque llegan tan cansados a casa) Que

del mes.
Realizaremos el primer cafecito para padres el miércoles 16
de Octubre de 10:00 am a 10:45 am en el cuarto numero 261
en Highlands. Todos los padres y tutores están cordialmente
invitados a asistir y discutir algún problema relacionado con
la Escuela Intermedia. Por favor sírvase contactar a la Srta.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
NECESITAMOS PADRES VOLUNTARIOS
There are many ways parents can volunteer to help
out the Middle Schools, from contributing wrapped items
for baked sales to helping out with spiritwear and bake sales
at events. It’s extra helpful to volunteer not only at your
child’s school, but at the other Middle School campus as
well. Please make sure Eileen Seymour, eileenseymour@
optonline.net (Highlands) and/or Liz Mayeri,elizmayeri@
hotmail.com (Eastview) have your email address if you
are interested in volunteering in some capacity. Please also
remember to fill out the volunteer form when you sign up for
your P.T.A. membership.
Existen muchas maneras como los padres podemos
ser voluntarios para ayudar en la escuela, como dedicarse
a empacar pasteles para la venta de postres. Es sumamente
útil colaborar como voluntario, sin tener que hacerlo
necesariamente en la escuela de su hijo, también puede usted
ser voluntario en la otra escuela intermedia ya que tenemos

Eastview and Highlands Schools
Fred Gressler was a beloved physical education teacher at Highlands and an avid runner who died
suddenly after 27 years of teaching. The WPMS PTA honors Coach Gressler’s dedication to the wellbeing of the youth of White Plains through the annual Halloween Walkathon. Please honor Coach
Gressler’s memory and support the WPMS PTA by participating in this fun school-wide event.
Students are invited to wear costumes with a minimum fundraising donation of $10. Prizes are awarded for the students who raise the most money

Ambas escuelas Eastview y Highlands
Fred Gressler fue maestro de educación física en Highlands y un ávido corredor, quien falleció muy
repentinamente después de 27 años de enseñar. El PTA de WPMS honra al Entrenador Gressler
por su dedicación hacia el bienestar de los jóvenes de White Plains por medio de la CAMINATA DE
HALLOWEEN. Por favor honremos la memoria del Entrenador Gressler apoyando al PTA de WPMS
participando en este evento divertido para toda la escuela.
Los Estudiantes están invitados a usar sus disfraces con una mínima donación de $10. Los premios serán otorgados a aquellos que recauden mas dinero
