Music at a glance…
Music arms our students with 21st century skills they need to thrive in our
society and in the workplace. Students demonstrate independence, build strong
content knowledge, use technology, collaborate, practice social and cross-cultural skills,
learn flexibility, and explore creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.
Music literacy is the primary anchor of the music curriculum. With each big
idea we study, students are learning how to read, write, express, perform and
understand the music around them.
Students receive the opportunities to sing alone and with others, perform on
instruments, improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments, compose and
arrange music, read and notate music, listen to, analyze, and describe music, evaluate
music and music performances, understand relationships between music, the other
arts, and disciplines outside of the arts, and understand music in relation to history and
culture.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME TO HELP YOUR CHILD IN MUSIC?
SING! Studies show that children whose parents sing (even if they don’t sing
well!) sing more and sing better in tune. So warm up those vocal cords and
pick a tune!
ASK! Ask students what they are learning in music and have them show you
things that they have been doing on their iPads.
LISTEN! Have students sing to you or play their recorder for you to work on
their performance skills.
PERFORM! If you have the opportunity to take your child to a music
performance take them! Ask them questions about what they are listening
to.

Noteworthy News From Music
Did you know that Music is one of the Four Fine Arts taught at Henking? Music is an important part of a school’s curriculum. At Henking School, students in kindergarten through second grade look forward to participating in music every week. Kindergarten students attend music class twice a week for 20 minutes and first and second grade students attend music class twice a week for 30 minutes. A growing body of research continues to explore the role of the fine arts (dance, drama, music, and visual art) in education, as they contribute to the academic achievement and social and emotional development of children and youth. For example, the effects of music are evident in the development of the complete human being -‐ emotional expression, self-‐esteem, creativity, and problem solving, those which support the skills needed in the 21st century. These studies show that music is worthy of study and good for students, schools, and communities. Therefore, music is a necessary component of education for all children. Exposure to music and the fine arts provides students with the skills necessary to use their minds creatively as well as cognitively. The National Core Arts Standards have provided guidance for learning about the arts, which include creating, performing/presenting/producing, responding, and connecting as ways students acquire musical skills, knowledge, and concepts. Students also understand the role of music in its context to the world around them. We begin to learn about the many types and styles of music through guided listening or performance as well as by using basic music notation and vocabulary. During music class, students participate in activities that reinforce the elements of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, tone color, and expression. In addition, we highlight music through a variety of seasonal activities, celebrations, and the character counts initiative. Ask your child to share a song or activity with you that they have learned in class. Furthermore, we take the opportunity to collaborate and integrate among disciplines, as we know that this will heighten and enhance key concepts. We also incorporate writing in the music room as this supports our school goal of writing across the curriculum. I am proud of the accomplishments of the students and the growth that is seen throughout the year. Recently, the second grade students did an outstanding job performing in our Henking School Fine Arts Showcase, which highlighted several Aesop’s Fables. We look forward to our upcoming Henking School’s Fine Arts Week for kindergarten and first grade students in March. Please stay tuned for further details regarding this wonderful event. Finally, I always look forward to seeing families at our Open House Night at Henking School. If you have any questions or comments in regards to music, please do not hesitate to contact me. SMART NEWS
We put the ART in SMART
Third Grade
The Third grade artists are just
about done painting their
helping robots. It was clear
that many wanted help with
their homework and walking
their pets. Other students
created robots to help them
cook and clean the house,
robots I would personally love
in my home.
What are you
afraid of?
Fourth Grade
In addition to creating their
hand narrative, some students
were able to tell their story to
their classmates. Presenting
artwork in front of a group is
an important step in personal
growth. It helps them verbally
discuss their creations and
builds public speaking skills.
Fifth Grade
Graffiti. Vandalism or fine art?
The lesson in Graffiti art not
only coincides with our Artist in
Residence visit from Viola
Elkins, but it is art that will be
used for the musical. We are
focusing on positive words and
thoughts that empower us and
lift our confidence and spirits.
Look up, look down, art is all around
The Fifth grade students created a gargoyle that would protect them
from something that they fear. Originally used to protect cathedrals
from evil spirits, gargoyles were also designed to cover up gutters and
down spouts. These intriguing beasts allowed for water to flow
through their mouths projecting it away from the building. The artists
sketched a 2D concept for a gargoyle and then transformed that idea
into a 3D clay sculpture. Through processes of pinching, rolling a slab
or a coil, the students manipulated the
clay. Many did it with ease while others
discovered
it was more
difficult to
work with
than
originally
anticipated.

Schoology
Many great things are posted in
your child’s Schoology app.
Open their app, tap on the bars
in the upper left, select courses
and near the bottom you will see
Visual Art. Once you are in their
class you can open any of the
folders to see what the students
are learning in art. Included are
power points that are wonderful
for students that might have
missed a presentation due to
absence. You will also find
videos, tests, and many how to
draw documents. Schoology is a
great “go to” place for keeping
up with your child’s art activity.
Keynote
Don’t forget to continually check
out your child’s Art keynote
presentation. This documents
their progress in art and includes
learning targets.

Self Discipline & Problem Solving
Art offers great opportunities for students to work on
self discipline, problem solving, and mentoring skills.
With so many moving parts in our projects, the
students are really called upon to be self-directed
learners. In the process, many become great
instructors and mentors to their peers.

Dear District 34 Families,
Parents have a unique opportunity to provide feedback to their school through the Illinois
5Essentials Survey. This survey was designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner
workings of your child's school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your
thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness.
Please complete the survey today for each school where you have a student enrolled. The
survey is only open through March 11, 2016.
The information gathered will be used by the schools and the District to help identify areas of
strength and areas for improvement. The identity of respondents and their survey responses will
be kept completely confidential.
The survey is not long and should only take about 10 minutes to complete.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view 2015 Reports, please

Expectations:
Since choir is a chosen during-school activity, it is expected that students follow all school rules
and behavior and etiquette during choir rehearsals and performances.
Cost:
There is a one-time $5 fee to participate in choir. This needs to be turned in with your child’s
permission slip. It can be paid in cash or check (made out to Glenview School District 34).
Attendance:
Attendance is expected at ALL choir rehearsals and performances unless a student is absent
from school on the day of a rehearsal or performance. Each student makes a significant
contribution to the ensemble, and it is important to know if adjustments must be made to
accommodate an absence. If a student must miss a choir event (rehearsal or performance) for
a reason other than illness, a WRITTEN note must be turned in one week before a missed
rehearsal and three weeks before a missed performance.
Please note that if a student is absent from school on the day of a performance, he/she is
unable to participate in an evening activity on the same day as the absence. Students who sign
up for choir are expected to participate in the ensemble for the entire year. This creates the
best learning and performing experience for this musical team!
