CUARTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA
Hoy, Domingo del Buen Pastor, es una celebración especial: la
Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones. La Iglesia en el
mundo entero honra todas las vocaciones cristianas. Rogamos que
nuestra Iglesia se vea enriquecida por nuestro compromiso de
permanecer fieles al llamado de Dios. Que Jesús, el Buen Pastor, nos
guié y proteja en la senda de la vida.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El primer día de mayo es reconocido como el día mundial del
trabajo y conmemora seis mártires de Chicago, quienes fueron fusilados en
1886 cuando la policía trató de impedir una pelea campal durante una huelga
de obreros. Curiosamente esta fecha no es reconocida por EE.UU. pero sí
por muchos países latinoamericanos. En 1954, el Papa Pió XII apoyó los
derechos del obrero incluyendo a san José Obrero en el calendario cristiano.
Esta fiesta celebra y recuerda la doctrina social de la Iglesia Católica, una
doctrina que insiste que: "El mensaje cristiano no aparta a las personas de la
edificación del mundo, ni les lleva a despreocuparse del bien de sus
semejantes, sino que les impone esta colaboración como un deber"
(Guadium et Spes 34).
Es justo conmemorar a san José como obrero en el día mundial
del trabajador, porque este santo varón nos recuerda que al trabajar uno
colabora con Dios en la creación continua del mundo y de la humanidad.
El trabajo no sólo es derecho humano es una responsabilidad que se debe

tomar con amor al prójimo.
EL REBAÑO DEL PASTOR
En el arte cristiano, las primeras imágenes de Jesucristo no
fueron de su crucifixión ni de su resurrección. Fueron de Jesús como el
Buen Pastor, tal como nos lo presentan las lecturas de hoy. En el pasaje
evangélico Jesús se nos revela como el pastor y sus seguidores son su
“rebaño”.
La primera y la segunda lecturas nos cuentan un poco más sobre el
rebaño. El pasaje de los Hechos nos asegura que tanto los judíos como los
gentiles están llamados a seguir a Jesús. Es la fe, no el derecho de cuna, lo
que nos permite pertenecer a la comunidad de creyentes. En el pasaje del
libro del Apocalipsis, aprendemos que el rebaño que le sigue a este Cordero
de Dios será también purificado en su sangre. Tendrán que sobrellevar un
tiempo de prueba antes de gozar de la vida eterna. Estén seguros de la

HOY LA IGLESIA RECUERDA, EN EL DÍA DE LOS TRABAJADORES, A SAN JOSÉ,
OBRERO. Pablo VI se ha expresado al respecto: "Vosotros, los hijos del
trabajo, que durante siglos habéis sido los esclavos de la labor, buscad a aquel
que declara que la vida es sagrada, que el obrero es libre de las cadenas que la
primacía del materialismo y del egoísmo
económico ha soldado no sólo en torno de
los puños de los trabajadores, sino en torno
de su corazón y de su espíritu... Buscad un
principio, una razón que haga a los hombres
iguales, solidarios entre sí, y que les
devuelva la fraternidad. Y ello no en el odio
contra otros hombres... Ya que todos viven
en una comunidad natural, que traten de
formar una sociedad humana y que sientan
la grandeza de ser un pueblo".
El mundo humano es el mundo del trabajo,
hecho por la inteligencia, a través de las
manos que en medio de la naturaleza
señalaron el camino del progreso y la
cultura. Dios concedió manos a otras
especies, pero sólo a la mano del hombre le
dio el carácter de herramienta. Toda la
técnica sobre la cual se asienta la civilización
es prolongación de esa mano que Dios
otorgó al hombre. Hoy celebramos al padre
nutricio de Jesús, justo y humilde carpintero
de Nazaret, que pasa la vida no sólo en la
meditación y la oración, sino también en las
fatigas de su artesanía. José es el símbolo de
la prudencia, del silencio, de la generosidad,
de la dignidad y de la aplicación en el
trabajo; también lo es de los derechos y de
los deberes respecto del trabajo.
San José fue un auténtico obrero en el
pleno sentido de la palabra, y el único
hombre que compartió con el Hijo de Dios
la tarea de todos los
días.
Recordamos hoy a
todos los
trabajadores de
nuestra patria y del
mundo, pidiendo al
cielo para que sean
instrumento de paz,
de evangelización,
de serena
inteligencia, de
valor y de confianza
en sí mismos, de esperanzas de bien y de
fervientes voluntad, dignos y sin retaceos en
la hermandad de los hombres. Hoy la
Iglesia recuerda, en el día de los
trabajadores, a san José, obrero.
Juan Pablo II enseña que los hombres
descubren pronto la cruz en su trabajo;
precisamente por ello el esfuerzo humano
es redentor, pues Cristo lo ha unido a su
pasión: también él fue obrero y predicó su
evangelio del trabajo conociendo
íntimamente esta realidad que tiene por
protagonistas a todos los hombres y
mujeres del mundo

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Today, Good Shepherd Sunday is a special celebration of World
Day of Prayer for Vocations. The world-wide Church honors all
Christian vocations. We pray that our church may be enriched by
our commitment to remain faithful to God’s call. Jesus, the Good
Shepherd, guides and protects us on our life journey.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The French Revolution swept the church away in an astonishing
way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely
shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and
romps. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on
for the ride, even the seven-day week was
demolished along with the names of the months.
What emerged from the chaos was the
Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life,
and therefore marriage law in France, French
Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil
marriage mandatory for all citizens.
In practice, when the faithful marry, they
go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor
performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied
by a patriotic speech about the duties of the
citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch,
everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding
liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing.
Sadly, a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite,
and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do
celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the
spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children
for baptism.

THE SHEPHERD’S FLOCK
In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his
crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show
him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today’s readings. In the
Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his
“flock.”
In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The
passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow
Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers.
In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows
this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of
trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but
know there is a price to be paid.

A mouse and a cat go to heaven and they are welcomed by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. First St. Peter asks the mouse if he was
excited to be there. The mouse responded that he certainly was excited but a little nervous. Concerned, St. Peter asked why? The
mouse explained that heaven was so big and he was so small, he was afraid that he could not get around very well. So, nice guy that
he is, St. Peter said he would give the mouse a pair of roller skates to get around on. The mouse was very pleased to hear this and
skated off on his merry way. Next St. Peter said to the cat, "are you excited to be here? The cat said he was more than excited because
he had never had meals on wheels before!
