What was Jesus thinking about this
“triumphant” entry into Jerusalem? Was he
thinking “Great! These people finally get me,
worshipping me?” Or was He thinking “These
people just don’t understand me or what I’ve
been trying to tell them. In a few days, they’ll
turn on me and kill me?”
One thing we know about Jesus. He did not
want to be worshiped. He ran from it. After the

Transfiguration, Jesus told Peter,
James, and John not to tell anyone so as
to avoid being worshipped (Mt 17:9).
After healing the leper, Jesus tells him
not to tell anyone (Lk 5:13). When the
crowds came to worship Him, Jesus
went away to a deserted place to pray
(Lk 5:16). What Jesus did ask us to do
was to imitate Him -- to do what He
did.
The response of the people isn’t hard to
understand. Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the dead. Some thought Jesus
might be the Messiah who would free
the Jews from Roman oppression.
Some thought Jesus must be from God
- God is in our midst. So of course they
celebrated Jesus’ arrival in their capitol,
Jerusalem. And then Jesus was arrested
by the Romans. And fear and doubt
filled their hearts. And they ran away.
And aren’t we a bit like those crowds in
Jerusalem? On a good day, we feel the
presence of God in our life. We praise
God, feel good, . . . and go on about our
day. On a bad day, we don’t notice and
drive right by Jesus on the corner with
the “Homeless, Hungry” sign. And the
car full of a life’s belonging parked on
the side of the road. Praise is good.
Worship is human. It is humbling to
stand in the presence of God’s awesome love for us. But remember, Jesus
wasn’t looking for that. He was most
clear about his message in Mt 25:31-46
(If you did it to the least of these, you
did it to me; . . . if you did not do it to
the least of these, . . . ) And it falls on
us to remember that, while we are
praising Jesus, we must challenge ourselves to follow in His footsteps and
heal the suffering of His brothers and
sisters around us.

Juan que no le comentaran nada a
nadie para evitar ser adorado (Mt 17:9)
Después de sanar al leproso, Jesús le
pide que no dijera nada a nadie (Lk
5:13). Cuando la multitud vino a
adorar a Jesús, él se fue a un lugar solitario para orar (Lk 5:16).
Lo que nos pide Jesús que hagamos es
que lo imitemos, que hagamos lo que
él hizo.
La respuesta de la gente no es difícil
de entender. Jesús acababa de resucitar
a Lázaro. Algunos pensaban que Jesús
era el Mesías que libraría a los Judíos
de la opresión Romana. Otros pensaban que Jesús venía de Dios- Dios esta
entre nosotros. Así que por supuesto
celebraron la venida de Jesús a su capital, Jerusalen. Y después Jesús fue arrestado por los Romanos. Y el temor y
la duda lleno sus corazones y huyeron.
¿Acaso no somos un poco parecidos a
esa multitud de Jerusalen? En un buen
día, sentimos la presencia del amor de
Dios en nuestras vidas. Damos gracias
a Dios, nos sentimos bien…. y proseguimos con nuestro día. Y en días no
muy buenos, ni siquiera nos damos
cuenta de Jesús parado en la esquina
con un letrero que dice sin hogar y
hambriento. Y el auto lleno de
pertenencias de toda una vida estacionado a la orilla de la carretera. Dar
gracias es bueno. Alabar es de humanos. Es muy humilde estar en la
presencia del gran amor de Dios. Pero
debemos recordar, que no era eso lo
que Jesús buscaba. Y no podía haber
sido más claro acerca de esto como en
el mensaje de Mt 25:31-46 ( En verdad
les digo que, cuando lo hicieron con
alguno de los más pequeños de estos
mis hermanos, me lo hicieron a mí;
……En verdad les digo: siempre que
no lo hicieron con alguno de estos más
pequeños, ustedes dejaron de hacérmelo a mí…)
Y recáe sobre nosotros recordar esto,
que mientras damos gracias a Jesús,
debemos desafiar-nos a nosotros mismos a seguir sus pasos y sanar el sufrimiento de nuestros hermanos y hermanas alrededor nuestro.

When he came near the place where the road
goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole
crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise
God in loud voices for all the miracles they
had seen: "Blessed is the king who comes in
the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and
glory in the highest!" Luke 19:37-38
Jesus and his followers were traveling to the city of Jerusalem.
The city was going to have a big celebration called Passover that
would last for a whole week. As they were traveling, they came
to a place called the Mount of Olives. They stopped there and
Jesus gave his disciples some special instructions. "Go into that
village over there," he told them. "As you enter it, you will see a
young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it
and bring it here. If anyone asks, 'Why are you untying that donkey?' just say, 'The Lord needs it.'"
So the disciples went and found the young donkey, just as Jesus
had told them they would. As they were untying it, the owner
asked them, "Why are you untying that donkey? They simply
answered, "The Lord needs it."
The disciples took the young donkey to Jesus and they put coats
on its back so that Jesus would have a nice, soft seat as he rode
it into town. Word spread quickly through the town that Jesus
was coming. He had become quite famous because people had
heard about his healing the sick and even raising the dead. As
Jesus entered the town, a large crowd had gathered. People began to throw their coats on the road in front of Jesus. They cut
branches from the palm trees and waved them and they began to shout, "Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the
name of the Lord."

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La liturgia oficial de la Iglesia para el Domingo de Ramos es algo paradójica. Entramos proclamando Hosannas
con cantos y vítores y al poco tiempo estamos gritando: “¡crucifícalo, crucifícalo!” Según el rito la lectura del Evangelio y la consagración de la Eucaristía se hacen dentro del templo, pero se comienza afuera del templo con la bendición de los ramos.
En Estados Unidos y otros países latinoamericanos se usan palmas en lugar de ramos. En Europa, normalmente,
se usan ramos de olivos. Últimamente en Colombia para proteger la palma de cera del Quindío, se les ha pedido a los
fieles que usen ramitas de plantas o ramos de flores. Estoy de acuerdo hay que proteger el ambiente, pero admito que
prefiero las palmas, ya que es difícil poner un ramo de olivo o de flores detrás de una imagen sagrada colgada en la
pared. Esta es una costumbre latina que nos recuerda que los “hosannas” y el “crucifícalo” del domingo de ramos nos
acompañan todos los días del año.

“Dios escribe derecho en renglones torcidos”, dice el
refrán. El testimonio contundente de san Pablo, cuando
nos dice que todo es basura fuera del conocer a Cristo y
experimentar la fuerza de su Resurrección, es un mensaje
bien directo y claro –aunque Dios sabe que Pablo anduvo
por una senda bien torcida antes de recibir la luz cegadora
del Señor.
Isaías nos recuerda que los grandes milagros del pasado no son nada en comparación con la nueva creación que
Dios va a realizar. “¿No lo notan?” nos pregunta el profeta, como si todavía anduviéramos perdidos por nuestras
sendas torcidas.
Y no hay renglón más derecho que la línea que conecta la intensa miseria de una mujer pecadora con la misericordia de Dios que se muestra en la persona de Jesús. ¡Eso
sí que son Buenas Nuevas!”

PASIÓN
La palabra “pasión” conlleva un profundo y determinado compromiso. Pero es interesante que también tiene
relación a la pasividad. La persona profundamente apasionada del relato evangélico de Lucas es Jesús. Parece pasivo pero no lo es. Está totalmente consciente de sí mismo y
totalmente presente al día que comienza el jueves por la
noche en su última cena con los apóstoles y termina con
su entierro antes de la puesta del sol el día siguiente. Entonces le sigue el largo silencio del sábado.
El relato de la pasión se lee entero y sin pausa el Domingo de Ramos en la Pasión. Esta historia, que se encuentra en cada uno de los evangelios, no cambia. Somos
nosotros los que cambiamos. Cada año, nos presentamos
con otro año de historia para escuchar y hacerle caso a
esta historia que tanta falta nos hace. La vida nos traquetea y de nuevo volvemos a los relatos de la Pasión para
