But did you know that preparing for that first day actually starts at birth? Your baby’s brain grows more in his first three years than at any other time in his life. The care she receives and the experiences she has during those early years directly affect how she will grow up. As a parent and caregiver, you make a huge difference in your child’s future success. Even simple activities can help learning. Talking, singing and reading to your baby from birth — in whatever language you feel most comfortable — helps him learn to talk and get ready to read and write. Encouraging your baby to roll, crawl and walk and, later, play games and get exercise — builds his problem-solving and social skills. Actively caring for your child’s mind, body, social and emotional needs is what great parenting is all about. And it comes with great rewards! Helping your child succeed is up to you. Being involved in your child’s early care and education (both inside and outside the home) is both a responsibility and a right. First 5 LA is committed to giving parents the tools and resources they need to get their children the care they deserve. Visit www.ReadySetGrowLA.org/BackToSchool/ for a listing of all the resources mentioned in this guide. Making Friends, Managing Feelings Studies show that kindergarten students who get along with others and can handle conflict are more successful in school and life. Improve your child’s chances for a successful transition to kindergarten by building social and emotional school readiness when she is a baby. Ages 0 – 12 months Infants can’t control how they feel, but starting at birth, they begin to learn to cope with frustration. Your infant will pick up on the cues you give her. Teach her to relax by staying calm when she cries or fusses. Help him feel secure by promptly responding to his cries. By building trust through early attachments to parents and caregivers, the seeds are planted for confidence and self-control. Ages 1 – 3 years Respond quickly and calmly to stop a toddler “acting out.” For example, remove food if he throws it. Setting regular bed, bath and meal times help him feel safe and more in control. Help her understand her feelings by naming and discussing them: “I know you feel angry that we didn’t buy candy.” “It makes me feel happy when you put your shoes in the closet.” An added bonus to giving toddlers praise and affection when they do something right is that it encourages them to repeat that behavior. Ages 3 – 5 years Preschoolers are ready to develop greater self-control, express feelings appropriately and follow rules and instructions. Encourage your child to express herself through play — roaring like a tiger is a great way to release anger or frustration! To help build a good sense of self, ask your child to be a “helper” in charge of a task, such as stacking magazines, and be sure to praise him for a job well done. Take the time to discuss solutions to problems they may have: “If there is only one apple and two kids want it, what would you do?” Making Friends: Social Skills Ages 0 – 12 months Babies start learning to communicate as soon as they are born. By responding to the sounds your child makes, and encouraging him to make more, you are teaching him the “back and forth” of conversation — even before he learns a single word! Try “mirroring” his smiles, laughter and cooing. This shows your baby that he is loved, and teaches him the language skills that are important to developing social skills. Ages 1 – 3 years Toddlers play side-by-side, interacting with one another more as they develop. It is important to supervise when your children play, and remember to step in to help resolve problems and teach appropriate behavior. When your child grabs a toy from another child, calmly tell her that she is not allowed to do that, and return it. Take the time to name and explain feelings: “You want to use Sam’s toy, but Sam feels sad when you grab it away.” Set limits and consequences — like leaving the park if she hits someone — and stick to them. Ages 3 – 5 years At this stage, school readiness skills such as sharing, cooperating, taking turns and problem-solving continue to grow. Playing “pretend” helps communication and negotiation skills (deciding who plays the princess this time, for example), and encourages children to see other points of view by playing different roles. Offer your child props (old clothes, pots and pans, etc.) to use in imaginative play and arrange play dates to encourage friendships. Saying “please” and “thank you” and being kind to others teaches your preschooler the importance of cooperative and polite behavior. Self-E steem If your ch ild feels g Matters oo she is mo re likely to d about herself, fulfill her for succe ss. H potential through s elp build her self -es miles and hugs — th teem speak lou ey can der than words! Choosing Child Care: How to Get the Best for Your Family Choosing the right child care is one of the most important decisions you can make. Whether you select a family member, friend, neighbor or center, getting the best child care and early education for your child means taking an active role in his or her life! Here are some important questions to ask when choosing a child care provider: • Caregiver/Child Ratio. How many adults are there per child? The more adults per baby or child, the better. Visit the Los Angeles County website at ceo.lacounty.gov/ccp/resources.htm for guidelines on adult to child ratios. • Facility Quality. See if the location is a clean, safe, enriched environment. Do the play areas look safe and age appropriate? Where do the children nap? Are the kitchen and diapering areas sanitary? Is there a sink nearby for hand washing after changes? Be sure to see if they have toys and equipment for a variety of ages. • Location, Hours and Policies. Is your child’s care conveniently located, even if you change jobs? What are the hours of operation? What are the policies on late pickups, sick children and visiting? These questions may not seem important at first, but finding a provider that fits your lifestyle can make all the difference. • Staff Training, Turnover and Philosophy. What is the caregiver’s experience and training in early childhood care and education? How long has the staff been providing child care? To see if their caregiving style matches yours, ask how they would handle situations such as your child crying when you leave. • Age-Appropriate Activities and Schedule. What is typical day for a 2-year-old? How is it different than a 4-year-old’s day? Children have different needs at different ages, so look for child care that enriches your child’s learning and prepares her for school. • Communication with Parents. How do they keep parents up to date on what happened during the day? Do they provide written reports? Choosing Child Care: How to Get the Best for Your Family After you select a caregiver, it’s important to stay involved. If you can, volunteer your help or time to participate in special events, such as parties or field trips. Meet regularly with caregivers to check in on your child and ask questions. By being actively involved, you create a “team” approach to care and education where your child wins! For more child care resources in L.A. Even if your child isn’t going “back” to school or day care, your family may shift from long days and vacation to a school-year schedule. Organizing and preparing in advance for a new school year can help make the transition as smooth as possible. Here are some ideas to make it easier: • As the days get shorter, have your children go to bed and get up earlier. Even an extra 10 minutes can make mornings calmer. • Read back-to-school books with your child to help her get over any fears of the new school year. You can find free books at your local library, where a librarian can help you choose. For more information on finding a library near you, visit www.colapublib.org/libs, www.lapl.org/branches or call 211. • If your child is starting at a new school or day care facility, take him for a visit before the first day to meet his new teacher or caregiver and see his new classroom. And don’t forget to ask if he has any questions about where he’ll be going. Sometimes, talking is all it takes to help him feel comfortable. Separation Anxiety: Not Just for Kids It can be tough to leave your baby or young child with a caregiver — for both of you! Ease the separation from your child by speaking with his caregiver before the first day. That way you know what to expect and can feel more comfortable. Work with your child’s caregiver to follow a consistent “good-bye routine” each day so that your child learns what happens when you leave. For example, you may give your child a favorite toy or stuffed animal, kiss him goodbye and then have his caregiver read him a book after you leave. Visit www.ReadySetGrowLA.org/BackToSchool/ for a listing of all the resources mentioned in this guide. Learning from Nature Children are born curious about the world around them, and fall is a great time to explore nature. Allowing little ones to discover the natural world builds an interest in science as well as an appreciation and respect for living things. Begin with your baby: talk about changes in weather and the beauty of nature, from flowers to birds. Toddlers are often fascinated by worms, ants and other creatures big and small — allow your little one to observe them at the park, playground or in your own yard. Collect different kinds of rocks or leaves with your preschooler. Take time to look at rainbows and the stars with your children. For a special “hands-on” nature education experience, visit Kidspace Children’s Museum in Pasadena near the Rose Bowl. It is a wonderful place for children and parents to explore the natural world, with live animals, programs, activities and exhibits for all ages — even babies! Visit www.kidspacemuseum.org to learn more. First 5 LA has teamed up with Kidspace to offer special discounts. Visit www.ReadySetGrowLA.org/coupons for more information. If you have some lentils, soil, water and sun, you and your child can grow a tiny, edible “forest” in less than a week! Just follow these easy steps: 1. Put about an inch of soil in a small, shallow dish — a recycled plastic or foil take-out container works well. 2. Sprinkle a small handful of lentils over the soil, and soak with water. Press the lentils down into the soil. 3. Place in a sunny area or window. 4. Give your lentils just enough water to keep the soil moist. Soon, they will begin to grow — and in a week, you will have lentil sprouts to eat. Cut or pinch sprouts to use. Eat them as-is for a healthy snack, or add to your favorite salad or sandwich.
