ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC CHURCH
THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE
It is doubtful that Saint Paul,
when he sat down to write what we
now know as the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, knew that
he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of
Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set down ideals about love
that have held fast through the centuries. Sometimes we
may think that because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends,
providing them with some sound advice about what it
meant—and still means—to live in love, day by day, as a
follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a
broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God
and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look like
in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our relationships with others.

THANK YOU! On behalf of the entire St. Elizabeth School community we would like to thank you for contributing
during our second collection weekend for St. Elizabeth
School the weekend of January 10th. Your generosity
allowed us to raise over $1,450 for tuition assistance
for our school families. The way in which this community comes together to support one another is truly
amazing. Our next second collection weekend is in March, and I hope
the school can count on your continued support.

DID YOU KNOW?
Kik Messenger and the dangers of anonymous messages
Social media sites are available to anyone with an internet
connection (computer, phone, tablet). Your kids may be sharing their lives with complete strangers, and parents should
be aware of the sites they use, what they share, and who
their friends are. One mobile app, Kik, is regarded as the
most dangerous site for internet predators, because users
can send messages to anyone with a cellphone, including
young children. Kik has no options for parental controls, leaving kids exposed to the entire web. To learn more about this
app in the Virtus® article “Mobile App Danger—Kik Messenger,” email [email protected].
¿SABIA USTED?
Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy
The Church is called above all to be a credible
witness to mercy, professing it and living it as
the core of the revelation of Jesus Christ.
From the heart of the Trinity, from the
depths of the mystery of God, the great river
wells up and overflows unceasingly. It is a
spring that will never run dry, no matter how many people
draw from it. Every time someone is in need, he or she can
approach it, because the mercy of God never ends.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have
been a sense of marriage as a church institution. Christians
followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting.
Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible,
and so they recognized the government’s role in marriage. In
general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was
good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it
easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage
was a divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and
they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official religion of
the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter.
On wedding days people gathered in the bride’s house,
where the father would “give her hand” to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official
words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone
walked in procession to the bride’s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became
customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the
meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely
optional, but had a “photo-op” feel to it that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest
were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union.
