SPONSORSHIP ELIGIBILITY
TO BE OR NOT TO BE . . . A SPONSOR FOR BAPTISM OR CONFIRMATION
The opportunity to walk with another in Faith, whether a child or an adult is an awesome privilege. It is cause for serious consideration
on the part of those who ask another to witness with their lives to what it means to be a Catholic, and for those who accept this
responsibility. It is important to think carefully about your selection and decision. The person to be considered a Sponsor must be at
least 14 years of age and have themselves completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation), and are leading
a life in harmony with the Faith and Tradition they are called to witness. A Godparent/Sponsor cannot be the mother or father of the
one to be baptized. If married, their marriage must be recognized as “valid” by the Catholic Church. They must be attending Mass
regularly, that is, every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation.
They will need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility signed by their pastor. Being properly registered at one’s parish is an important first
step. Consider carefully your invitation and response. There is more involved to this than simply standing at the Baptismal Font. It is a
lifelong commitment. If you have questions, speak with one of the parish priests who can guide you correctly.
 Call the Parish Office EARLY, even before your child’s birth to obtain information that will help you in selecting suitable godparents.
 New parishioners are asked to come to the Parish Office and fill out a Census Form. Individuals and families must be registered and
practicing here for at least six months before applying for sponsorship.
 If you have changed your address or other information, please contact the Parish Office at (732) 356-0027 so that we can update
our records.
IN THE HOSPITAL?
If you or someone you know is sick in the hospital or nursing home for an extended stay, please contact the parish office. We will do our
best to have someone make a pastoral visit and bring communion. Please note that the Hospitals or Nursing Homes do not notify us,
and we rely on the family to inform us of this information. Thank you for your assistance.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must
forgive.” - COLOSSIANS 3:13
Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people
to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge
or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the
feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to
give the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe
someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a
co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up
the phone or text someone.

SUNDAY OFFERING
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
The Week Ended December 14
Although there is nothing in the Bible or notable in
Christian tradition about New Year’s resolutions,
many good stewards take advantage of this time of
year to become closer to the Lord.
Family: How often in our busy lives does time with
family get neglected? Resolve to find a special time
with each family member each week. Make sure
that family meals are celebrated frequently. Plan a
special family outing once or twice a month, and go
to Mass together. Resolve that when your spouse
or child speaks, you will truly listen.
Health: Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Without good health, we lack the energy to serve
the Lord well. Resolve to make that doctor or dentist
appointment. Make one healthy change in your
eating habits. Add a few minutes of extra exercise
to each day’s routine.
Possessions: Want less. Live more simply. Do you
own your possessions, or do they own you?
Challenge yourself to sacrifice something you like
but that you know another person needs more than
you.
Parish Family: Offer your service to the liturgy or a
ministry of your parish in the New Year. Enrich your
parish and your parish experience by becoming
involved.
Money: Take charge of your budget and your
checkbook. Reprioritize your financial goals to ensure that the Lord is coming first in the expenditure
of your wealth. Plan your spending and don’t spend
reactively or impulsively.
Work: Do your best at your chosen profession. Be
honest and faithful. Resolve to find a class or other
forum that will strengthen your knowledge and
expertise. Bring a prayerful attitude to your job.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN
INITIATION OF ADULTS
If you or someone you
know would like to hear
more about Jesus and His
Church, we invite you to
join us at an RCIA (Rite of
Christian
Initiation
of
Adults) Inquiry Session.
Inquiry Sessions are opportunities to ask questions
about God, Jesus, the Catholic Church, the Mass,
Saints, Sacraments, prayer, etc. The sessions DO
NOT expect or require a commitment to join the
Catholic Church.
In addition, if you wish to be baptized into the
Catholic Faith, or if you are already baptized and
wish to receive the other Sacraments of Initiation, or
you come to us from another faith wishing to
become a fully initiated member of the Catholic
Church then we invite you to attend an inquiry
session. RCIA is the process which will lead you to
Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
For more information about sessions in English,
please contact Deacon Gary Newton at
[email protected] or for sessions in Spanish,
contact Sister Lucia at [email protected].
EPIPHANY COOKIES TO
HOMEBOUND
FAMILIES IN NEED
I have become aware of some families in need in
our area and I think it would be very meaningful if
we could offer some readymade food to those in
need. Consequently, if you know of anyone in need,
please refer names, phone numbers or addresses
of people that you think may need help this
Christmas Season.
The CIAM will be assembling cookie
trays to bring to our homebound
parishioners for Epiphany, the
weekend of January 3. Please
donate a dozen or more cookies to
this cause.
It is a wonderful way to let the homebound of our
parish know we are thinking of them during the
holiday season. You can drop your cookies off in
the Community Room the weekend of January 3.
Thank you!
It is part of our calling of Christ to help those most in
need. Please e-mail Sr. Lucia or call her at the
parish office so she can begin to compile a list. She
will also need assistance with distribution of the
food, so any help is welcome.
Thanks, Fr. Al

NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE FROM FR. AL
NEW YEAR’S MASS SCHEDULE
As we are entering a New Year, it is hard to believe
that we are starting 2015. Time really flies! Whether
we are having fun or not, time goes by. Therefore,
we have to make the best of it. When life gives us
lemons, let’s make lemonade. At times, life gives us
many challenges and we are put to the test. If we
do our best to deal with whatever life gives us, it will
make us stronger. Remember, united we stand. So
as we begin this New Year, let’s try to do our best to
be a more united and stronger community. Christ
welcomed everyone and that is why He was well
loved. We at St. Joseph’s strive to be a welcoming
and loving community. As such, anything we do in
unison makes us more Christ like. May the Spirit of
Christ guide us this New Year, and may 2015 be a
year of love and understanding towards one another.
With love and Best wishes, Fr. Al

SCHOOL MASS MESSAGE
FROM FR. AL
I would like to thank everyone who participated in
our school selling liturgy at the Gym on Saturday,
December 13. The attendance was great and I met
many people from different parts of New Jersey
who attended St. Joseph School / Holy Family
Academy. I am very proud of our Parish Council.
They took the time and effort to convert the Gym
into a sacred place for Mass and made the display
of school memorabilia available to all. We have
many parishioners who made this event meaningful
and once again, thank you. We could not have done
it without you. As I said that day in the homily, our
efforts and sacrifices in building a school for our
children will not go in vain. God knows what he is
doing, and now the school that we built will be
serving our community and our children. For those
who went to our school, now you have memories to
share with your kids or grandkids. Thank God, it will
still be a learning institution and our town will be
taking care of it. St. Joe’s will always be a good
memory for us and its legacy will always remain.
Best wishes, Fr.

construimos estará sirviendo a nuestra comunidad y
nuestros hijos.

No
Padre Al.
