 THE PASTOR’S OATH OF FIDELITY 
19 OCTOBER 2014
Six years ago, on 19 October 2008, I was officially installed as the tenth Pastor of Our Holy Redeemer Roman
Catholic Church in Freeport, New York. On that day, I publicly professed, in the presence of Bishop-delegate and
Pastor of Saint Martha’s in Uniondale, Monsignor Francis Caldwell, an Oath of Fidelity that I gratefully renew
today.
“I, Father Arcoleo, on assuming the Office of Pastor, of Our Holy Redeemer Parish, Freeport/New York,
promise that I shall always preserve communion with the Catholic Church
both in the words I speak and in the way I act.
With great care and fidelity
I shall carry out the responsibilities by which I am bound in relation both
to the universal Church and to the particular Church in which I am called to exercise my service
according to the requirements of the law.
In carrying out my charge, which is committed to me by the Church,
I shall preserve the Deposit of Faith in its entirety,
hand it on faithfully and make it shine forth.
As a result, whatsoever teachings are contrary to it, I shall shun.
I shall follow and foster the common discipline of the whole Church and
shall look after the observance of all ecclesiastical laws,
especially those which are contained in the Code of Canon Law.
With Christian obedience
I shall associate myself with what is expressed by the Bishops
as authentic doctors and teachers of the faith
or established by them as the Church's rulers.
And I shall faithfully assist diocesan bishops so that
all apostolic activity,
to be exercised by the mandate and in the name of the Church,
is carried out in the communion of the same Church.
May God help me in this way and the holy Gospels of God
which I touch with my hands.”
Please pray that by God’s grace and the help of the Church, I
may be faithful to this Oath of Fidelity for as long as I remain
the Pastor of Our Holy Redeemer.

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
(ABOUT THE FAMILY)
APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION
FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO
OF POPE JOHN PAUL II
TO THE EPISCOPATE
TO THE CLERGY AND TO THE FAITHFUL
OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY
IN THE MODERN WORLD
(22 November 1981)
PART ONE
BRIGHT SPOTS AND SHADOWS FOR THE FAMILY TODAY
The Situation of the Family in the World Today (continued)
…At the root of these negative phenomena there frequently lies a corruption of the idea and the
experience of freedom, conceived not as a capacity for realizing the truth of God's plan for marriage and
the family, but as an autonomous power of self-affirmation, often against others, for one's own selfish wellbeing.
Worthy of our attention also is the fact that, in the countries of the so-called Third World, families often
lack both the means necessary for survival, such as food, work, housing and medicine, and the most
elementary freedoms. In the richer countries, on the contrary, excessive prosperity and the consumer
mentality, paradoxically joined to a certain anguish and uncertainty about the future, deprive married
couples of the generosity and courage needed for raising up new human life: thus life is often perceived not
as a blessing, but as a danger from which to defend oneself.
The historical situation in which the family lives therefore appears as an interplay of light and darkness.
This shows that history is not simply a fixed progression towards what is better, but rather an event of
freedom, and even a struggle between freedoms that are in mutual conflict, that is, according to the wellknown expression of St. Augustine, a conflict between two loves: the love of God to the point of
disregarding self, and the love of self to the point of disregarding God.
It follows that only an education for love rooted in faith can lead to the capacity of interpreting "the signs
of the times," which are the historical expression of this twofold love.
The Influence of Circumstances on the Consciences of the Faithful
7. Living in such a world, under the pressures coming above all from the mass media, the faithful do not
always remain immune from the obscuring of certain fundamental values, nor set themselves up as the
critical conscience of family culture and as active agents in the building of an authentic family humanism.
Among the more troubling signs of this phenomenon, the Synod Fathers stressed the following, in
particular: the spread of divorce and of recourse to a new union, even on the part of the faithful; the
acceptance of purely civil marriage in contradiction to the vocation of the baptized to "be married in the
Lord", the celebration of the marriage sacrament without living faith, but for other motives; the rejection of
the moral norms that guide and promote the human and Christian exercise of sexuality in marriage.
Our Age Needs Wisdom
8. The whole Church is obliged to a deep reflection and commitment, so
that the new culture now emerging may be evangelized in depth, true
values acknowledged, the rights of men and women defended, and
justice promoted in the very structures of society. In this way the "new
humanism" will not distract people from their relationship with God, but
will lead them to it more fully.
Science and its technical applications offer new and immense
possibilities in the construction of such a humanism. Still, as a
consequence of political choices that decide the direction of research
and its applications, science is often used against its original purpose,
which is the advancement of the human person.
It becomes necessary, therefore, on the part of all, to recover an
awareness of the primacy of moral values, which are the values of the
human person as such. The great task that has to be faced today for the
renewal of society is that of recapturing the ultimate meaning of life and
its fundamental values. Only an awareness of the primacy of these
values enables man to use the immense possibilities given him by
science in such a way as to bring about the true advancement of the
human person in his or her whole truth, in his or her freedom and
dignity. Science is called to ally itself with wisdom.
The following words of the Second Vatican Council can therefore be
applied to the problems of the family: "Our era needs such wisdom more
than bygone ages if the discoveries made by man are to be further
humanized. For the future of the world stands in peril unless wiser
people are forthcoming.
The education of the moral conscience, which makes every human being
capable of judging and of discerning the proper ways to achieve selfrealization according to his or her original truth, thus becomes a pressing
requirement that cannot be renounced.
Modern culture must be led to a more profoundly restored covenant
with divine Wisdom. Every man is given a share of such Wisdom through
the creating action of God. And it is only in faithfulness to this covenant
that the families of today will be in a position to influence positively the
building of a more just and fraternal world.
To be continued next week . . .)

PRAYER FOR THE
SYNOD ON THE
FAMILY
(5 October 2014 - 19 October 2014)
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
in you we contemplate
the splendour of true love,
to you we turn with trust.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
grant that our families too
may be places of communion
and prayer, authentic schools of
the Gospel and small domestic
Churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may families never again
experience violence, rejection
and division: may all who have
been hurt or scandalized find
ready comfort and healing.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may the approaching Synod of
Bishops make us once more
mindful of the sacredness and
inviolability of the family, and its
beauty in God’s plan.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
graciously hear our prayer.
Amen.

COME HOLY GHOST
Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.
Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Let us Pray.
O God, Who didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us
in the same Spirit to be truly wise, and ever to rejoice in His consolation,
through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Father Arcoleo is glad and rejoicing to announce that
THE MOST REVEREND NELSON J. PEREZ
AUXILIARY BISHOP, DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
An Irish blessing. The eight times table. Referee
hand signals for football. A collection of famous
paintings. The entries on this list may not seem to
have anything in common. In fact, for most people,
they probably don’t!
However, for a student at The De La Salle School each represents the
focus of a Monday Memorization. We do this as a way to help our
students with the skill of memorizing. Each Monday a teacher takes
a turn and presents something verbal, visual, or kinesthetic to be
memorized. A student has until Morning Assembly on Friday to
report to the teacher and demonstrate that he has mastered the
assignment for that week.
Given the rapidity with which one can retrieve information in our
tech based society some may view learning to memorize as a task
from an earlier age. At The De La Salle School we consider it a
valuable contemporary skill.

What do you do when inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy

More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the
Offertory basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than likely that your Sundaymissed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose to give Our Holy Redeemer less, it’s just
hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes or use

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PSALM 96
2ND READING: 1 THESSALONIANS I: 1-5b

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God” (See Matthew 22:1521). Today’s responsorial Psalm tells us that: “The Lord is King.” This is certainly true. Yet, God
in His infinite wisdom also tells us we have to repay to Caesar (that is, worldly rulers) what
belongs to Caesar. Their allegiance to God does not excuse Christians of doing their civic duty.
In fact, Christians are to perform their civic duty with a good and well-trained conscience. The
forthcoming elections are a case in point. God, the great King, through his Church, has told us
the value of life and especially the life of those who are most vulnerable, the unborn. How is
this going to affect the way you are going to vote? Remember you must repay to Caesar what
belongs to Caesar, but never forget that you must also repay to God what belongs to God. Do
the right thing. Do you need help in doing so? Then, pray for guidance. Pray to the Blessed Mother. She will help
you to say “behold the handmaiden of the Lord.” She will also help you to put in action these words and repay to
Caesar what belong to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.
Please Pray for Our Priests

A ‘JUST WAR’ EXPLAINED
(SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE-DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH)
“Those who treat of such matter usually enumerate four conditions of a just war, lawful authority, a just cause, a
good intention, and a suitable method. But each must be discussed by itself.”
Continued from Sunday, 12 October . . .
THE FOURTH CONDITION: SUITABLE MANNER
“The fourth condition is the suitable manner, which consists chiefly in
this, that no innocent person be harmed, as John the Baptist explains,
“Do violence to no man; neither calumniate any man; and be content
with your pay.” By these words he forbids the injuries which soldiers
usually inflict on the innocent, either by violence or by trickery, whether
to person or to property. When he says, “Do violence to no man,” he
forbids the injury which open violence inflicts on one’s person, as when
soldiers kill peasants who do not readily obey. When he says, “neither
calumniate any,” he forbids the injury done by fraud and calumny, as
when soldiers say that a certain man is a traitor or an enemy although
they know that the contrary is true, and on this charge they either rob
him themselves, or they kill him, or they bring him before the ruler or the
prefects. And when he adds, “and be content with your pay,” he forbids
the injury done not to the person, but to his property, as when soldiers
rob and plunder wherever they can, or even exact and extort from those
from whom they should not.
But it must be observed that there are three classes of persons on whom
soldiers cannot inflict injury, according to the rule of John the Baptist.
The first class is that of all those who are not enemies of the State; by reason of which soldiers cannot be excused who
inflict injury on citizens, or friendly peasants on whom they are quartered, or through whose property they are
passing, and they are not excused if they say that their salary has not been paid to them; for the goods of private
citizens are not therefore due them, nor should they inflict punishment on a citizen or a peasant, if the king or the
ruler sins by not paying the wages to the soldiers, unless by chance, for just cause, the men of some certain place have
been condemned to this punishment, namely, that they must maintain the soldiers, which, however, happens more
rarely than otherwise.
The second class is that of those who, even if they are in some way enemies of the State, yet are excused in the canon
Innovamus, on truce and peace, where it is written thus: “We decree that priests, monks, those in religious houses,
pilgrims, merchants, farmers either going to or returning from market, or employed in agriculture, and the beasts with
which they plow or carry seed to the field, are to enjoy fitting security.” Here by the name merchants are not meant
those who live in the country of the enemy, and form a certain part of the State, but only those who are passing
through or who are coming for the market-day, who are not members of the State.
The third class is that of those unfit for war, such as are children, old men, and women; for such, even if they can be
seized and robbed, since they are part of the State, yet they cannot justly be killed, unless perchance they are slain
unintentionally or accidentally; as when a soldier casts a javelin against a battalion of the enemy, and by chance a
child, or a woman, or even a priest, is killed, the soldier does not sin, but he sins when he kills intentionally, and can, if
he wishes, refrain from killing; for both natural reason teaches this, and God has also commanded this to the Jews,
namely, that they should spare the children and the women, and Theodosius was seriously reproved by St. Ambrose
because, when he wished to punish the Thessalonians, he ordered all those whom he met to be killed without
discrimination, as Theodoret relates. But if Moses sometimes ordered even women and children to be killed, this is not
therefore lawful for our soldiers; for Moses clearly knew from the Revelation of God, that God, to Whom no man can
say, “Why dost Thou thus?” so willed it.” Against Faustus, Bk. XXII., Ch. 75.

consideramos a Dios mismo?

pertenece a Dios.

GIVE GOD
WHAT BELONGS
TO GOD
The Herodians asked Jesus,
“Tell us then Teacher, what
is Your opinion: Is it lawful
to pay the census tax to
Caesar or not?” Knowing
their malice, Jesus said,
“Why are you testing Me you
hypocrites? Show Me the
coin that pays the census
tax.” Then they handed Him
the Roman coin. He said to
them, “Whose image is this
and whose inscription?” They
replied, “Caesar’s.” At that
He said to them, “Then
repay to Caesar what belongs
to Caesar and to God what
belongs to God.”
Saint Matthew XXII: 17-21
