Editorial
According to one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century, Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951),
“the limits of my language are the limits of my world”.
The students who went to Murcia in February and Normandy
in May certainly broadened their horizons when they took
part in the Spanish and French trips this year. As their
language skills improved they were able to have a better
appreciation of the richness of the countries they visited. If
you missed out on those two opportunities turn to
page 6 to join in the next MFL trip in 2016.
Year 13 have also gone the extra mile to
produce very ambitious essays on art with
particular emphasis on Picasso’s works and on
Marcel Pagnol’s novel Manon des Sources.
The pupils who took part in the Routes Into Languages
speaking competition on the 10th March also pushed
the limits of their language when they performed in
front of a numerous crowd in French and Spanish. Two
of them achieved the first and second prizes and are
currently actively preparing for the Regional Final held
at the University of Bath the 24th June. We wish them
luck!
Year 7 and 8 show you how fantastic their linguistic
ability is by advertising West Buckland School in
French and Spanish.

This residential trip is designed to introduce
students to different aspects of the Spanish
culture as well as giving them ample opportunity to
use and develop their linguistic skills in a
practical way, following a high quality programme
devised by the Gredos Centre. The programme
includes activities such as Spanish cookery lessons,
archery, walks in the mountains, a treasure
hunt in the village nearby and a creative
workshop. Each student will be provided with a
booklet and educational materials to use for the
different activities. The Gredos Centre is located by a
Nature Park in a valley close to several little villages
in the Gredos Mountains, west of Madrid. The
landscape is incredibly varied and includes rocky
mountains, woodland, and rivers. Should you require

The proposed dates for the visit are during half-term and likely to be from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June 2016.

In the A2 paper the essay is worth almost 50% of
the written exam. Thorough and regular practice
are paramount for Year 13’s success. This term,
they produced fantastic essays; this one explores
the theme of guilt in the novel studied this year.

Le crime le plus évident dont ils pourraient être coupables est la mort de Jean de Florette. Bien qu’Ugolin et le
Papet soient ceux qui ont activement essayé de saboter son entreprise dans leur propre intérêt (ce qui les rend plus
responsables), cela ne libère pas les villageois de toute la culpabilité. Une conversation entre Pamphile et Cabridan
nous révèle que tous les villageois savaient qu'il y avait une source
aux Romarins mais personne n’a aidé le Bossu. Le fait qu’ils inclinent
la tête et ne peuvent pas croiser le regard de Bernard quand il les
interroge et accuse montre qu’ils ont honte et se sentent coupables.
Manon choisit de punir tous les Bastidiens (et pas seulement Ugolin)

les qualifient de « complices d’un crime » et cette accusation montre que Manon croit qu'ils sont également responsables. De plus, dans son sermon, le curé parle de « plusieurs coupables », peut-être que cela inclut tous les
Bastidiens et pas uniquement Ugolin et le Papet. Le Papet essaie de se défendre en citant le curé — s’il y avait un
seul criminel, Dieu ne punirait pas tous les habitants—, ce qui est ironique, parce qu’il est mécréant.
Mais la plupart des villageois sont chrétiens donc, en omettant d'aider leur voisin, ils se sont rendus coupables de

coupables, mais pour des raisons différentes. Même Manon, qui est considérée comme une victime, est coupable
d'infliger des souffrances aux autres (y compris à des enfants innocents). Que ce soit en changeant son apparence
pour impressionner une fille, en n’aidant pas un voisin ou en étant hypocrite, chacun des Bastidiens est coupable de

It has been a crucial time for Year 11
students. How have they managed their
work-life balance?
Mi instituto es muy grande y antiguo. Tiene un
pabellón deportivo y un teatro. Yo hago muchos
deportes en el pabellón deportivo y cuando hace
calor juego al cricket y al hockey fuera. Actúo en el
teatro y en ocasiones actúo en obras dramáticas.
En mi tiempo libre, normalmente voy al polideportivo para jugar al baloncesto, que me gusta mucho
porque mis amigos juegan también. Si llevamos los
zapatos del instituto allí, el profesor cierra el edificio, y como no tenemos otro sitio, vamos a la tienda
de dulces de nuestro instituto, que es menos divertido que jugar al baloncesto, pero es aún agradable.
Mi asignatura favorita es la historia porque me
mola aprender sobre el pasado y la historia del
instituto. También me gusta el deporte porque
soy bastante activo y disfruto de hacer ejercicio.
Mi asignatura menos favorita solía ser el español
pero ahora es la geografía porque es muy aburrida.
Aunque me gustan muchas actividades, hay una que
prefiero que se llama escalada de roca. Me encanta
esto porque hay muchos peligros y es muy emocionante. También se me da bastante bien, pero hay
un chico que es mejor. El mes pasado fui a un
concurso muy grande con muchos chicos y chicas.
Era muy difícil y terminé último, fue muy molesto.
El fin de semana próximo, voy a ir al gimnasio para
un partido de baloncesto. Después iré a una cafetería para tomar un café con leche con mi familia. El
día después voy a ir al cine con mis amigos y ver «El
Último Soldado», una película sobre un soldado que
se encuentra solo. Es muy triste. Hace más de un
año que fui al cine por última vez.
Me parece bien el uniforme escolar porque me
gusta llevar una corbata de vez en cuando. También me gusta el uniforme escolar porque no
tengo que pensar cómo vestirme. De pequeño
llevaba un jersey azul en lugar de una chaqueta.
Mañana aprenderé el francés, la biología, la
educación física y la tecnología. Odio la educación
física porque en este momento no estoy en forma.
Me encanta el francés porque soy bueno en los
idiomas. Después del instituto no haré educación
física porque no estoy en forma.
Mi tiempo libre es importante para mí porque es el
único momento en que puedo relajarme y tengo
una vida muy ocupada. Todos los días tengo deberes, y también si quiero aprobar mis exámenes
necesito repasar mucho. Finalmente tengo muchos
clubs en el colegio. Es muy cansado.
El próximo trimestre jugaré al baloncesto y al golf.
Estudiaré la biología y la química porque cuando
sea mayor seré médico. Escribiré artículos sobre la
historia del instituto. El año próximo quiero
continuar en el «Sixth Form», luego me gustaría
estudiar la medicina en una universidad.

The activities we did were
bread making, archery, fencing and the assault course. My favourite was the assault course because
we got really muddy and had lots of fun. We crawled through tunnels, we climbed over nets, we
swung on ropes and we rolled in mud.
In the château where we stayed
there were 7 or 8 people to each room. There was one girls’ room and
two boys’ rooms. In our room there were three Year 8 girls and five
Year 7 girls. It was really nice getting to know the Year Sevens a bit
better. I was in a single bed between my friends Kerry and Hilary.
The food was amazing. Before every meal they
would tell us the vocabulary so we knew how to say
what we were eating. They had lots of choice so
everybody found something they liked. I tried snails for the first time and they were really nice.
We went to see the Bayeux Tapestry which is over 70 metres long! It was beautifully stitched. Afterwards, we went to a war museum and it was extremely interesting. Lastly, we went to the war
cemetery and it was so lovely to see the amount of
respect everyone had for the fallen soldiers.

benefits and drawbacks of our
diet nowadays.
La dieta de hoy es muy diferente que la dieta del pasado. Hay
muchos más restaurantes de comida rápida, por ejemplo McDonald’s. Los jóvenes de hoy son víctimas de la invasión de la comida americana.
En mi opinión lo bueno de nuestra dieta hoy en día es la conveniencia. La incorporación de las mujeres al mercado laboral es
un gran problema porque los jóvenes no reciben una alimentación sana y como resultado ellos han aumentado de peso.
Nuestra dieta hoy en día es más barata que antes. Es bueno
porque muchas personas no
tienen el dinero suficiente para
pagar comida saludable. La
comida poco saludable es más accesible que otras comidas, lo
que es un problema, ya que significa que los niños comen más
de lo mismo.
A muchos niños les encanta la
comida basura porque es entretenida y les gustan los sabores
de hamburguesas y patatas fritas o nuggets de pollo y para los
padres es muy bueno porque es muy fácil y barato alimentar a
sus niños.
Que yo sepa hay muchos aspectos
muy negativos de nuestra dieta hoy
en día. La comida rápida como hamburguesas y patatas fritas tienen
muchos químicos malos. Las grasas
saturadas y otros malos ingredientes
son muy peligrosos para la salud y los
jóvenes son los que están más en peligro.
Una falta de ejercicio es otro problema de la dieta hoy
en día porque la gente gana peso que luego es más
difícil perder. Espero que la situación mejore.
La dieta de hoy ha cambiado totalmente nuestro estilo
de vida y es una situación muy seria. La dieta de antes
era mejor que la dieta de hoy en día porque contiene
químicos más dañinos como los números E y las grasas saturadas. Sin embargo, es incierto que la situación cambie. Oli Martin 12F

The Routes into Languages Competition is a public speaking competition where the competitors deliver
their speech in a foreign language.
I decided to talk about my family in
Spanish. I wrote a speech and
created a PowerPoint to go with it.
When I was told that I had been
selected to represent the school in
the competition, I felt a mixture of
excitement and fear. However, I
quickly realised how much practice
I needed to do. It had to be done,
though, so I just persevered and
learnt it as well as I’ve ever learnt
anything. I practised by reciting the
speech just before I went to sleep,
hoping that I would remember it
better. It worked! To learn
the whole speech – even
in Spanish – took less time
than I had anticipated, and
so before long, I knew it.
The end result was much
better than it had been
when we filmed my
original video entry. Our
dining room looked like a
Hollywood film studio, and
my cat continually tried to
steal the limelight! There
were many retakes!
The day of the competition is all a blur, really. I
was so nervous. I can
remember the tension
steadily building as we
moved through the programme,
nearing my name. I was last on the
list! The other competitors all
seemed so good! Speeches were
delivered in a wide range of
languages, not just the French,
Spanish and German that I was
expecting. In the end it was a relief
to get my performance out of the
way.
The rest of the day went agonisingly slowly as we waited for the
results, until I found out that,
amazingly, I was joint first! I now
go on to compete in the regional
competition in Bath later in the
year and I am sure this will be
another nerve-wracking day.

When I was told that I could take part in
the competition, I knew that it would be a
lot of work but I was excited that I would
be able to represent the school. I practised
in my head whenever I could; at school,
home or even during clubs. When someone would listen I practised in front of
them and listened to any tips they had for
pronunciation, speech or actions. Before
the competition I was nervous. I knew that
I was ready but I hoped that my speech
would sound as good as it did in my head
when the competition came. In my speech
I talked about my family and how I thought
they were witches and wizards in disguise.
There were funny parts to each paragraph
and, to be honest, even though I had had
help with the speech, I felt proud.
The other competitors were good and
there were some that really stood out for
me. For example, there was a German girl
who I thought was really confident and
engaging.
When they announced the winners I felt
excitement and tension in the crowd and
among the competitors especially. I wanted our school to do well. I saw Emma and
Elena walk up to collect prizes for first and
second places. I knew we had all done our
hardest to fulfil our place in the competition, and in my personal opinion, we all
did. I will continue to try hard in all languages and listen to my teacher’s advice so
that chances and experiences like the MFL
Speaking Competition come again.

Mi experiencia en este concurso fue
algo de lo que nunca me olvidaré.
Cuando me eligieron para participar
en la competición de Lenguas
Modernas, me sentí muy sorprendida pero a la vez contenta.
No solo fue mi primer concurso, sino
que me puso muy nerviosa tener
que hacerlo en español. Aunque mis
padres son españoles y yo también
sé español, aún fue bastante difícil
porque no es mi primer idioma.
Cuando llegamos al lugar
del concurso (un colegio),
lo primero en que me fijé
fueron los otros concursantes. En realidad estaban exactamente como
nosotras,
nerviosos,
concentrados, etc. Solo
que algunos colegios
tenían más participantes.
Yo me sentí muy nerviosa
antes de mi turno, el ser la
última de mi categoría
ayudó porque así me
fijaba en cómo lo hacían
los demás. La presentación me dio mucho miedo,
porque si hacía algo mal,
todo el mundo lo notaría.
Al final del evento, procedieron a

estábamos nerviosos para saber
quiénes serían los ganadores. Todos
estuvieron muy bien, mi gran
sorpresa fue cuando dijeron mi
nombre para el segundo premio.

al hotel, nuestra habitación no estaba
lista porque la habitación estaba llena
de gente enferma, olía mal y vomité
encima del recepcionista. Cuando me
bañé, la ducha se rompió y el agua estaba marrón, tampoco había toallas. Dormí mojado, sucio, enfermo y enojado.
Después de consultar con la almohada,
ahora creo: ¿4 estrellas? ¡A fin de cuentas, yo no diría esto! ¡Cuando las vacas

Lo mío no tuvo de gracia. Primero cuando llegamos al hotel, no había nadie en
la recepción no sabía qué pasaba pero
pensé que aquí había gato encerrado.
Así que fuimos a la oficina donde todos
los otros huéspedes estaban fumando y
daba asco. Por fin nos dieron nuestras
habitaciones pero, para empezar, en el
cuarto de baño no había papel higiénico
y se habían utilizado las toallas ¡perdí la
cabeza! La cosa más asquerosa era,
cuando me metí en la cama ¡Sentí algo
suave y blanco! Era un pedazo de pizza
mohoso y me puso los pelos de punta.

Primero, cuando llegamos al hotel, el

Year 12 discuss whether the government does
enough to stop young people from smoking.
Je connais quelques personnes qui fument et je trouve qu’ils
comprennent tous que c’est très mauvais pour la santé grâce
aux renseignements du gouvernement, mais ils n’arrêtent
pas. Après avoir regardé quelques vidéos et vu des affiches, je
crois que la majorité d’entre elles est destinée à des adultes. Donc le gouvernement devrait faire un plus grand effort pour produire des publicités qui visent les

Les jeunes continuent à fumer à cause de l’influence économique des
grandes compagnies qui produisent les cigarettes pour gagner plus d’argent. C’est l’un des plus grands problèmes dans la société d’aujourd'hui,
parce que ces entreprises visent tous les jeunes, ce qui est très mauvais
pour leur santé. Le gouvernement ne fait rien, parce que ces compagnies

Le gouvernement a essayé de réduire la consommation de
cigarettes surtout chez les jeunes. À cause de cela, on ne
peut plus fumer dans les cafés ou les autres endroits
publics. À mon avis, il y a moins de jeunes fumeurs grâce à
cette loi, ce qui est une chose positive pour la société en
général, parce que cette génération développera moins de
maladies liées au tabagisme y compris le tabagisme passif.

Si tuviera una pareja ideal, sería muy guapa y
divertida. Además, si me apareciera enfrente la
pareja ideal, tendría los ojos verdes, el pelo
corto y marrón y los dientes perfectos. Si estuviéramos solos en una isla desierta, nadaríamos
todos los días porque me gusta el mar. Si fuera
de vacaciones, iría en una isla cerca de América.
Si hiciera sol, nadaríamos en el mar con los
delfines, nos divertiríamos. Si hubiera nubes,
haría natación en una piscina y en la playa todos
los días. Si hubiera fruta exótica, haríamos jugo
por la mañana. Si fuéramos a la playa por la

Social networks are a hot topic not only in school, but
across the country as well. What do teenagers really
think? Let’s see what Year 10 have to say about it.
Je me connecte tous les soirs, une fois que je suis rentrée de l’école
et que j’ai fait mes devoirs. Mais, quelquefois, je ne me connecte
pas, parce que je veux regarder la télé.
Je passe beaucoup de temps tous les jours sur mon réseau social
et en particulier, Facebook. En fait, j’y passe trop de temps,
parce que Facebook est très addictif.
Je les utilise parce qu’on peut parler à ses amis. Les bienfaits sont qu’on
peut parler à ceux qui habitent loin et on peut suivre des célébrités aussi.
Pour rester en contact avec mes amis, bien sûr, mais c’est aussi utile si j’ai
des problèmes avec mes devoirs.
Sur mon réseau social, j’affiche une image de moi et des photos de mes
amis. Je mets des clips audio et on peut voir ma date de naissance aussi.
Sur mon profil Facebook, il y a mon prénom et mon nom de famille aussi
bien que des photos de mes amis et la ville où j’habite. Je limite quand
même l’accès à mon profil en me rendant dans la rubrique “confidentialité”.
Les dangers sont que des gens pourraient découvrir où j’habite,
des gens pourraient voler mes photos et mon identité.
Pour moi, les dangers des réseaux sociaux sont très graves si l’on
ne fait pas attention. Par exemple, certaines personnes partagent
leur adresse, ce qui peut être très dangereux.
Le plus grand danger est le harcèlement virtuel, ce qui peut mener des gens à devenir suicidaires
dans des cas extrêmes. On ne doit jamais afficher son identité, son adresse ou son numéro de téléphone, parce que cela attire des harceleurs.
Oui, bien sûr! Mais ils sont assez rares et je suis prudente,
donc je ne suis pas inquiète.
J’en suis très conscient, parce qu’au collège on nous avertit
souvent des dangers. En fait, c’est ennuyeux de temps en
temps.

For Year 11 it is the end of an important stage of their lives and the beginning
of an exciting new one. Here they look at how important school is for them.
OT: Ma matière préférée est l‘EPS, parce que c’est
amusant et le prof est intéressant. Par contre, je
n’aime pas le français car c’est difficile mais le prof
est cool. Je déteste l’histoire et la géographie,
pourtant, j’y suis forte. L’anglais me
plaît comme c’est facile et c’est utile.

voudrais retourner à
mon école l’année
prochaine, pour le lycée
et j’étudierai la chimie,
la biologie, l’économie

We are very fortunate to count in our midst students
coming from so many different corners of the world. Timi
Olasope (12G) invites us to discover his native Nigeria.
Nigeria, located in West Africa, is quite a large country and has one of the largest populations
in Africa.
Its capital city is Abuja, which is quite small compared to Lagos —
the most Westernised city — which is the largest and most populous city in the country.
In the country there are up to 50 languages spoken by different
ethnic groups but the 3 major languages are: Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa (mixed Arabic).
There is a religiously diverse society, with 50% adhering to Islam
and about 45% to Christianity, whilst the other 5% are traditional
religions.
Football is a popular culture in Nigeria and Nigerians
generally enjoy watching football games in their pastimes or playing as part of leisure.
30% of Lagos’s population is directly involved in
sports, including football.
A lot of the Nigerian cuisine is unique to West
Africa and is hardly available elsewhere.
During the Christmas period and on Thanksgiving,
a lot of families prefer the traditional roasted turkey meal along with other local foods such as
jollof.
Some facts about Nigeria
 Its major city, Lagos, is actually the biggest city
in Africa and has the fastest growing economy in
the world.
 The Niger river is the largest river in West Africa.
 It is one of the oldest locations of human existence.
 It is the largest producer of crude oil in the world.
