To write about “Hoofprints in the sand” is to talk about the dedication and effort of MOCY PRODUCCIONES EIRL and its hassles in “ANDARES” to promote the Peruvian Paso Horse through Peruvian deserts and paths yet unwalked. MOCY MUÑOZ R. LA ROSA Showing the paths of Peruvian Horse breeders, “ANDARES” Exhibition visited Lima and Trujillo, portraying through its pieces of art the memories of unknown travellers proud of their breed. Aware of the pride of breeders, the “ANDARES” team travelled to Doha, in the Arab State of Qatar. In those foreign lands, we saw their deserts and showed them through our pictures the aroma of our valleys and sands on which the descendants of their horses now trot. Continuing with such inspirational experience, ENCUENTROS (“Encounter”) took place amidst the Third ASPA Summit and now we have this great exhibition at the Norman Gallery encompassing 36 photos of Peruvian and Arab horses, whose beauty was captured through the lenses of two Peruvian photographers, Alejandra Iturrizaga Andrich and Sandra Cannock Graña, showing the world that personal connection with the Peruvian Paso Horse, a Cultural Heritage of Peru, and that distinctive expression of the Arab Horse. The texts included in this book were written by Mariano Cabrera Ganoza, an expert, lover, breeder, judge, authority in horse breeding, and promoter of the Peruvian horse breed. We would like to thank him deeply for his contribution. We would also like to express our gratitude to Consulate Enrique Villar in the Consulate in Oklahoma for sponsoring us and to acknowledge all those individuals and companies that have made this Great Exhibition and this unique edition possible. In 2012, they won 1st place at the National Choreography Contest and represented Peru at the “Fina Estampa” event in Santiago, Chile. The special connection she has with the Peruvian Paso horse and her passion for photography allowed her to capture the beauty this horse has to offer. She constantly strives to transmit their emotions and virtues in her photographs, selecting some of them to share at this exhibition. 1 !"#$%&%""'# ()*+%,'# -)#(%.' HISTORY AND ORIGIN Horses were introduced into America and Peru in 1532 with the arrival of the Spanish Conquerors after America was discovered. The genetic characteristics, that would later distinguish the Peruvian horse breed, were brought by the original Conquest horses, which in a long period of functional selection refined and generated the Peruvian Paso Horse breed. leys that the newly arrived horse was assigned the duties that would distinguish it as a breed. The horse arrived from Europe had to adapt to the estates located on these valleys as they were used to supervise work on the plantations -an extremely important role in Peruvian Agriculture. Travelling function was determined by the distances covered along deserts to join estates and towns from one valley with those of another valley. ing specimen has great instinct and disposition for long journeys. Its middle size, with an average height of 1.48 meters to the withers, condition that provides comfort to the rider when strolling or riding the horse for long distances. It has a deep chest and the distance between withers and girth, and between girth and ground are the same. The rump is inclined to perform its airs with naturalness and tail seat is low by shy of its creators. The Peruvian Horse breed began its development back in the times of Hispania. In the Iberian Peninsula, native breed horses commence to blend with some imported breeds from Austria and with Arab-Barb blood horses arriving from North Africa. This happened approximately in the 8th century, at the time of Pelayo, a noble Visigoth, and Muslim generals Tarik and Muza, when the Holy War of Islam took place. These are the ideal scenarios for its evolution as a travelling horse. At the beginning, the horse that settled in Peru accomplished functions specifically created for the war of conquest and activities related to sports, hunting, spears, and promenades. Once the Viceroyalty and the early Republic were established, the horse in Peru acquired definite functions in agricultural tasks, recreational activities and elegance and, essentially, adopted its travelling stamina to its new functions and scenarios in times of peace and prosperity. Breed characteristics were defined by function and are necessary for it to perform its airs in its own special manner, always keeping one leg on the ground. These unique characteristics define the Peruvian Horse as the smoothest and most comfortable in the world for its natural pace, resulting in one of the most pretentious equine breeds when paired with the traditional tack required by its paraphernalia and tradition. THE GEOGRAPHY IN WHICH IT BREEDS The territory of Peru, with its 2,500 kilometers of coastline, interrupted by 53 rivers flowing from East to West and forming the Peruvian coastal valleys, is the environment in which the Peruvian Horse breeds. Peruvian, born in Lima on June 13, 1973. Sandra became involved in the equestrian world as a result of a illness. In fact, on her way to the hospital, she would pass by a field full of horses and only the thought of riding and spending time with those horses encouraged her, making her feel safe and at ease. Thus, when she returned to Lima, she got her own horse and since she was 14 she has been participating in top equestrian competitions. Sandra finds that portraying and immortalizing horses through art is the perfect symphony to grow and express the passion she feels for these animals and, particularly, to display their stunning beauty. From 2004 to 2011, she enrolled in a number of photography classes and participated in Plastic Arts, sculpture, and painting workshops at Centro de la Imagen. Presently, she is engaged in the sale of artistic photography and decorative photographic work for corporations and private homes. As a comprehensive decorator, she remains in touch with the equestrian world at large, including every discipline and breed, appreciating their art and beauty. [2] Resting Arab. 5*%&3%,#0'*.) MYTHICAL HISTORY AND ORIGIN According to paleontological remains, the breed’s origins date back to the Middle East between the valleys of Euphrates and Tigris rivers. More than 4,500-yearold remains have been found with characteristics similar to those of the current Arabian horse. pure Arabian horse is born and raised in Asia; the other is an African Barb. There are other hypotheses about its origin; yet, this seems to be the most plausible based on scientific data. This pure-breed has influenced almost all of the European breeds of light horses with diagonal airs. Aside from their historical data, the origin of these horses can be traced back to the beautiful legends of Muhammad’s five famous mares. GEOGRAPHY AND ITS USE The Arabian horse’s natural scenarios are deserts and its strengths are its rusticity, temple, and extraordinary stamina. Horses, off-springs of the wind, under the Chestnut’s mantle never succumb. Due to its excellence, it was the horse of war and conquest in the Eastern World. It was also an extraordinary animal for sports and elegance exhibition. Today, the Arabian horse is widely valued for endurance tests and it is used for crossbreeding with other pure line breeds to give them more temperament, beauty, mobility, strength, and health. From the moment Muhammad enshrined them in his Quran, the history of the desert horse began and the legend disappeared. It is very important to separate the African horse (Equus Africanus) from the Asian horse (Equus asiaticus). These two breeds, according to the collective imagination, are of Arabic origin but their distinct origins and characteristics would have to be dispelled. There are great differences between them. The A DIFFERENTIAL BREED CHARACTERISTIC The Arabian horse has unique characteristics in relation to other horse breeds. When it is compared with other breeds, important differences are found in both structure and expression. One of the most prominent structural characteristics is the shape of its head and cheeks. From a frontal view, the head has a coffin shape with large round eyes and same shape nostrils -carved and very separate cheeks in the upper area of the jaw. The head, seen from the side, is concave. It is essential; it is this virtue that allows it to have a wide visual field. Ears very well implanted, alert, and fine like the straight and abundant manes. The neck is really long and distinguished like that of a swan, slim in the head’s union on the upper line and with wide scapula on the base, besides being clean of fillings. The horse size is between 1.43 and 1.53 centimeters. Its ribs are not so broad; the back is short and has one less vertebra than other breeds. The croup is high and straight with high tail insertion. The legs are very fine and proverbially healthy with defined tendons and ligaments. Hoofs are solid and well formed. As for the range of colors, the Arabian horses gave the world the chestnut and jet black. What it is most appreciated, as a desert horse in the Bedouins hands, is to maintain genetics purity that comes from the maternal line. The mother is always certain. Arabian horses are off-springs of the South wind. MARIANO CABRERA GANOZA. 21 Perfil árabe. [3] Arab Profile. 22 Cabeza bella. [4] Beautiful head. 23 Reflejo. [5] Reflexion. 24 Fuerza.
