WEEK OF
January 24, 2016
The Women’ Book Discussion Group
will meet on Sunday, January 24th, at
9:15 a.m. in the downstairs Conference
Room. This month’s book is “Convictions:
How I Learned What Really Matters” by
Marcus J. Borg. The book is a manifesto
for all progressive Catholics who seek the
best path to follow Jesus today. All women are welcome.
A Time for Reflection
This week, we hope you will review the
Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal information you
have received. The Bishop’s Appeal is different than a
one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign
where you are invited to make a pledge payable over
six months.
A gift to the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. Your gifts will provide critical funding to
pay for the education and formation of our seminarians, to help those most in need through 4 regional
Catholic Charities offices, to provide support for five
designated Catholic schools, and to ensure newer
means of connecting to and evangelizing our faithful,
our youth and young adults, and our fallen away
brothers and sisters. As you review the vocations and
ministries the Appeal supports, please reflect on your
gifts. God has given you all that you have. Your gifts
to our parish, to the Diocese, and to the work of the
Church throughout the world are a disciple’s response.
If you received your pledge form in the mail,
please complete it and mail it back, or bring it with
you to Mass next week. For those of you who did not
receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to
it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all
Masses next weekend and the following weekend.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration
and generous response.
Is Your Marriage In Trouble?
Are you considering separation or divorce? Before you do, you owe it to
yourselves to give Retrouvaille a chance. Retrouvaille is a program designed to provide help and support to married couples who are undergoing
difficulties in their relationship. It is for couples whose marriages are in
crisis, who are separated, or even divorced,
but want to try again. If you are experiencing loneliness, hurt, and brokenness in our
2016 Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal
relationship, let Retrouvaille help you. For
confidential information about or to register
for the upcoming program beginning with a
weekend of 19-21 February, please call our Registration Couple at
904.332.8604 or email ([email protected]) or visit the website

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s second reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a well-known passage describing the Church as the Body of Christ that is made up of many different parts yet still in union. This passage is especially relevant to St. Augustine Church and Student Center, because we are an especially diverse
community of Catholic followers of Jesus. To paraphrase St. Paul, the students cannot say to the non-students,
“I do not need you,” nor again the non-students to the students, “I do not need you.” We are all essential to the
mission of our faith community to bring Christ to the campus and the campus to Christ. To continue paraphrasing, if a student should say, “Because I am not a non-student I do not belong to the body,” it does not for
this reason belong any less to the body. The same is true for non-students. “Now the body is not a single part,
but many. You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.” Similarly, each of us has different gifts to bring
to the Church to help the Church grow and thrive. Paul writes of apostles, prophets, teachers, healers, speaking and interpreting tongues, etc.
We are entering into the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal drive, which will last for the next few
weeks. This appeal is strictly of treasure, and all the members of the Body of Christ in St. Augustine’s are
asked to make some contribution of record (the percent of parishioners participating is noted by the diocese). Last year, we made significant improvement over our historical levels (thank you), and we’d like to see
the trend continue this year.
However, we ask that you also continue to prayerfully consider the parish stewardship brochures and
submit your stewardship of time (prayer, reading, etc.), talent (volunteering), and treasure to the parish. The
capital campaign for the sanctuary restoration/renovation continues.
As Jesus said in the gospel from today, he comes “to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” May our
responses to the parish and diocese, in fact, the whole Body of Christ in his Church, make this an acceptable
year to him.

Stewardship Committee

HEY ALUMS!
From the Office for Vocations
Are you a Catholic Gators alumnus or
alumna, either visiting or having returned to Gainesville? Welcome back!
Thank you for all you did for the Catholic Gators during your time here. Whether it was in a big or
small way, your presence made a difference to this community.
January 24, 2016 - 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Through the power of the Spirit, Jesus proclaimed his
mission. How are you carrying on that mission today?
Ponder the possibility of being a deacon, priest, brother
or sister. (Luke 1:1, 4:14-21). If you have a question
about a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, contact Father David Ruchinski, Vocations Director,
(904.262.3200, ext. 101 or email [email protected]).
As you may know, our mission at St. Augustine’s is to bring
Christ to the community and the community to Christ. We
invite you to prayerfully consider joining our Mission and
supporting the Church and Catholic Student Center through
a financial contribution. Thank you for your generosity!

ENVIRONMENT/ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
PROGRAM
"Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure,
packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be
poured into your lap. For the measure with which you
measure will in return be measured unto you."
- Luke 6:38
The Catholic Church brings a distinct perspective
to the discussion of environmental questions, by lifting up
the moral dimensions of these issues and the needs of the
most vulnerable among us. This unique contribution is
rooted in Catholic teaching calling us to care for creation
and for “the least of these.” (Mt 25:40).
The Environmental Justice Program (EJP), a program of the Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development, educates and motivates Catholics to a
deeper reverence and respect for God’s creation, and encourages Catholics to address environmental problems,
especially as they affect poor and vulnerable people.
The program’s distinctively Catholic foundation
lies in Saint Pope John Paul II’s 1990 World Day of Peace
Message and the Catholic bishops’ pastoral statement on
the environment, Renewing the Earth.
