Powdered Milk Returns
Vuelve la leche en polvo
Last fall the Greater Chicago Food Depository made
the decision to stop offering powdered milk. This
caused a hole in our assortment. The food pantry
along with other agencies appealed to GCFD. Powdered milk is easy to store, has a long shelf –life and
is comparable in cost to regular milk. Our families
had gotten used to having powder milk as an option.
The volunteers worked with our families and explained the many ways that powdered milk could be
used in everyday cooking. During the fall we were
able to offer powdered milk through the generosity
of Sacred Heart Schools which donated the product.
The Food Depository listened to our pleas and is
again offering powder milk. Ignatian Services is
grateful for the continued support of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The Beginning of Lent
Miércoles de Cenizas:
el Comienzo de Cuaresma
Lent is the time we take to prepare our hearts for
the resurrection of the Lord. We do this through
penance, fasting, sacrifice and prayer. As a symbol
of penance we cover our forehead with ashes, an
old symbol of repentance and wanting to change
our ways.
We invite you to choose one or more “Lenten
resolutions” and prepare for Christ’s resurrection.
The parish has multiple opportunities for prayer
and spiritual growth. Participate in Operation
Rice Bowl. Pray the Stations of the Cross. Be part
of the Festival of Forgiveness. Pick up a book for
the parish library to help you learn more about
your faith. God is waiting for you.
Ash Wednesday is February 18. We will distribute ashes in the 7 am, 8 am and 7 pm Masses and
the 3 pm Prayer Service.

Celebrating Catholic Schools
Week at NCA
National Catholic Schools Week is a huge, annual
celebration established by the National Catholic Education Association. This year’s theme was
“Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service”. As
always, NCA puts their own spin on the week of event
with both new activities and our tradition favorites (like
the Brain Bowl and Faculty vs 5th Grade Basketball
Game). The highlights of special events this year were
musical. NCA Parent and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Viola performer, Max Raimi, organized a quartet
performance with other CSO musicians to perform for
our middle school students. Not only did the quartet
play an amazing piece entitle “My Life” by Smetana,
but Mr. Raimi did an excellent job of explain the story
behind the composition which really made the performance come alive. On Wednesday at our all school
mass, we honored Kevin Howard, NCA Athletic Director as with the “Heart of the School” award for his service and dedication. All of these special events made
us recognize how blessed we are to be a part of
Catholic Education. We exemplify the theme with our
high standards of academics, our commitment to a well
-rounded education, the blessing of our community for
which we are extremely thankful, and for the service
that we recognize is vitally important to do as well as
appreciate.

FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS
The entire history of the Jewish people is directed
toward one goal: that God might be glorified through the
chosen people. Christians, too, are called to “do everything for the glory of God.” In today’s scriptures Paul
reminds us that the best way for us to glorify God is to
seek to benefit “the many,” as Christ did when he shed his
blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one way the
Jews sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and
leprosy away from the chosen people. Jesus finds a better
way. He cures the leper, who immediately re‑enters the
community to spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both Jesus and the leper
fulfill their calling to glorify the God who fills us “with
the joy of salvation.”
