Fifth Sunday of Easter
THE WAYS OF LOVE
One can feel the energy of a young, growing
church in today’s first reading. For Paul and
Barnabas, it’s smooth sailing. For the sponsoring
church at Antioch, good news. The second reading—a vision—offers a picture of triumph, pure
and simple. We might paraphrase God’s direct
words to read: “Don’t you see? I make all things
new!”
The young church remains new and young to this
day if and when it follows the command Jesus
lays down in the Gospel: “Love one another.” The
attitude and actions of love define the disciples
and identify them with their master. Every person
on this earth can be a disciple. For discipleship
does not depend on learning or sophistication or
age or arcane knowledge of secret cults. We are
asked to study and practice the ways of love,
right here and right now in the company of ordinary people. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Year of Faith
Year of Faith, starting Oct. 11, 2012 ending Nov. 24, 2013. April 28 Our Father “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth.” He “is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish.” His commandment is “that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” This commandment sum‐
marizes all the others and expresses his entire will. (CCC2822) The greatest commandment in the law is to love God with one’s whole heart and one’s neighbor as oneself (cf. Matt. 22:37‐40). Christ made this commandment of love of neighbor His own and enriched it with new meaning. For He wanted to equate Himself with His brethren as the object of their love when He said, “As long as you do it for one of these, the least of My brethren, you did it for Me” (Matt. 25:40). Assuming human nature, He bound the whole human race to Himself as family through a certain supernatural solidarity and established charity as the mark of His disciples, saying, “By this will all men know that they are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
