We have been hearing about the upcoming Diocese
of Reno Synod for several months now, and many people
are asking, "What is a synod, and how does this concern
our parish?" According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, a
synod is: ‘A general term for ecclesiastical gatherings under hierarchical authority, for the discussion and decision
of matters relating to faith, morals, or discipline.’ So, put
simply, it's a church meeting! For example, Pope Francis
has called together bishops and cardinals for the Synod on
the Family which will meet in Rome this fall. One of the
first synods of the Church was the Council of Nicaea in
325, from which we have much of the Nicene Creed that
we profess at Mass every Sunday.
The Diocese of Reno held it's first Synod in 1958, and
Bishop Calvo has convened this second Synod, which will
meet in December of 2015. Our synod will consist of lay
people, religious, and priests from the diocese. We will
meet to discuss the important issues facing our Church in
Northern Nevada & the synod will recommend a direction
for the diocese to Bishop Calvo.
Each parish and school, and most lay and religious
organizations, has delegates to the synod. Over the next
few months, every parishioner will have the opportunity
to share ideas with our parish delegation. We want to take
your thoughts and concerns, from your unique perspective, and your solutions, forward to the synod. You will
see more in the bulletin about specific opportunities to
speak with our parish delegation, and you will also see
surveys in the pews. Please do feel welcome to talk to any
of the delegates at any time with your thoughts about the
direction our diocese should take.

FRIARS’ PANTRY
We’re now working on the budget for 2015–16, but before the
Finance Council makes some decisions I would like your feedback.
The income level for the pantry has fallen greatly. The pantry is the
most significant outreach offered by this parish and Gail has worked
very hard to stream line the way the pantry functions. The pantry
serves over 350 individuals and families per month and the average
size of a family is 4-5 children. The problem is that where the pantry
is located the rent is $1,285 per month, however, it is right in the
middle of the area that needs our help.
I do not want to close the pantry which at this moment is the
council’s only choice since there has been no significant increase in
funds from the offertory or the charity box. Both Gail and I need your
input as to how we can continue God’s work and meet the needs of
the people that need the service of the pantry. Please write out your
ideas and place them in the collection basket and also put your
name on it so I can send you a thank you.
CALLING ALL BUSINESS PEOPLE
Have you ever thought about advertising in the bulletin?
Our bulletin editor has more material than we have space for
and if we were able to fill up the advertising page we could
add a lot more information about the parish and what is
happening. I am also looking at a page of business card size
ads. So if you have an interest in any of these advertising
ideas give us a call and we will fill you in on how it can be
accomplished.
Joke
A lady who was taking a Scripture course discovered a burglar in
her kitchen. Since she had no weapon to scare him off, she raised
her hand and shouted, “Acts 2:38.”
The burglar froze and didn’t move, so the woman called 911. The
policed arrived and were amazed to find the burglar still frozen where
he stood.
“What did you say to him?” they asked her.
She replied that she had just quoted scripture to him: “Repent, and
be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your
sins may be forgiven.”
As the cops put the burglar in the squad car, they asked him,
“Why did her scripture verse scare you so much?”
“SCRIPTURE?” “I thought she said she had an axe and two 38’s!”

ENTRADA
OFERTORIO
No queden tristes aunque me voy, aunque me voy, yo volveré. (2)
sois levadura, sois grano de sal, antorcha que debe alumbrar;
sois la mañana que vuelve a nacer, sois espiga que empieza a granar;
Id amigos por el mundo, anunciando el amor, mensajeros de la vida, de la paz y el perdón;
sois los pastores que han de guiar al mundo por sendas de paz;
sois los amigos que quise escoger, sois palabra que intento gritar;

Amen
