Dear friends in the Lord, Last weekend an elder visitor to our parish

Dear friends in the Lord,
Last weekend an elder visitor to our parish was accidentally tripped by  Monsignor Al, Father Javier and Father
the outstretched leg of the man in front of her in the Communion procession
Bill will offer a novena of Masses for
who genuflected before receiving Holy Communion. He was unaware of the
the intentions of our fathers, living and
commotion behind him and returned to his pew untroubled; she was taken to
the hospital with a severe bruise and kept overnight for observation.
deceased, beginning on Father’s Day,
I admire the reverence that leads someone to want to genuflect or kneel
June 19. If you would like to participate
for Holy Communion. But it must be understood that standing is also a posture
in this novena, please submit your
of reverence in the Catholic tradition. The General Instruction on the Roman
father’s name on the form enclosed
Missal states: “The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of
the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied Holy Comwith your June church envelopes.
munion because they kneel. Rather, such instances should be addressed pastoExtras are available in the church

norm. When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her
head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence… (No. 160).
Surely, accidents like last weekend’s must be one of the reasons for this norm: In a parish setting, where people from
many places and of different physical abilities come together in a procession, it is neither practical nor safe for the proce ssion to
come to a sudden halt when a communicant stops to genuflect or kneel.
The General Instruction also states: “Attention should be paid to what is determined by this Instruction and the traditional
practice of the Roman Rite and to what serves the common good of the People of God, rather than private inclination or arbitrary
choice. A common posture, to be observed by all participants, is a sign of the unity of the Christian community gathered for the
Sacred Liturgy” (No. 42).
The Internet is full of sites where contentious Catholics assert and vigorously defend their “right” to receive Communion
however they choose. Accidents and injuries like last week’s should make it clear that the question is less one of rights tha n of
Christian charity. I would prefer not to have to correct people during the Communion procession and perhaps embarrass or ange r
them. But if I have to choose between that and visiting yet another injured communicant in the hospital, you must know which I
am going to choose.

A Perfect Time to Create a Lead Trust: The feder al rate is very
low right now, making it a great time to set up a Lead Trust. A
Lead Trust will provide gifts to charity for a fixed number of years
beginning now, and then, at the end of the term of years, the
remainder of the trust will pass to your children or grandchildren.
You can name your parish endowment fund as the charitable
beneficiary of the trust for the years it is in effect. Please contact

FIRST MASS OF FATHER GERARDO
CEBALLOS
Saturday, June 25
Four new priests will be ordained for the
Archdiocese of Atlanta on Saturday morning,
June 25 at the Cathedral. One of the newlyordained, Gerardo Ceballos Gonzalez, has
assisted us at IHM many times during his formation, and he will celebrate his first mass as
a priest here during our 4:00 p.m. vigil mass
that same day. All are welcome to accompany
him as he begins his priestly ministry. Father
Gerardo has been assigned to St. Michael parish in Gainesville.
NO CONFESSIONS
Saturday, June 25
So that Monsignor Al, Father Javier and
Father Bill can participate in the ordination of
priests that morning, there will be no confessions at IHM on Saturday, June 25.
ON THE DECK
NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY
Monday, June 27
National HIV Testing Day was established as an annual observance to promote
HIV testing. The theme is “Take the Test. Take Control.”
Step 1: Know the Facts
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. No
effective cure exists for HIV. Some groups of people in the United States are
more likely to get HIV than others because of many factors including their risk
behaviors and geographic location. Blacks and Latinos continue to be disproportionately affected. According to Emory University’s Center for AIDS Research
(CFAR), the South is home to 21 of the 25 metropolitan areas with both the
highest number of individuals living with HIV and newly diagnosed with HIV
infection (includes Metro Atlanta and Augusta). CDC data show that the South
lags behind the rest of the U.S. when it comes to HIV-positive people getting
the treatment they need or knowing that they are infected in the first place.
Nearly 1 in 8 people living with HIV are unaware of their status.

Are you interested in becoming
Catholic, or simply learning more
about the Catholic faith? We look
forward to meeting you, answering
your questions, and helping you
discern God’s call. Please join us for
the first of our summer “inquiry”
sessions on Wednesday, June 29,
7:00-8:00 p.m., in the lower level of
the church. Contact Drew Denton in
the parish office for more
information.
Each Thursday, Dr. Louanne Bachner
leads an informative and prayerful
discussion of the lectionary readings
for the following Sunday. The study
meets in the Lower Level at two
different times: 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m.
There is no registration required and
no fee to participate. Feel free to join
the group as your schedule permits.
Eligible students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation in the spring of 2017
(exact date to be determined, once the bishops release their schedules). All
candidates for Confirmation must be baptized, practicing Catholics, in the 10th
grade or higher. They must have received at least two years of religious education
immediately prior to being confirmed, either at a Catholic school or through our
parish Life Teen youth ministry program (the 2016-2017 school year will count as
one full year). In addition, they must attend a few preparation sessions during the
2016-2017 school year and an overnight retreat just prior to Confirmation.
There will be a mandatory meeting for Confirmation candidates and their parents
on Sunday, September 25, 6:15 p.m. More details will be announced in the bulletin
and on the parish website as they become available.
For now, please mark your calendars for September 25 and make sure you are
enrolled in religious education for the 2016-2017 school year (Enroll in Life Teen
online at http://ihmatlanta.org/faith-formation-enrollment). And while you’re at it,
please consider joining the music and ministry team for the 5:00 p.m. Sunday
Mass, which will be moving in a youth-friendly direction this fall (sign up at
http://ihmatlanta.org/lifeteenband).
If you’ve just graduated from middle school, it’s already time to start making plans
for your Confirmation! Rising 9th-graders who wish to be confirmed in the spring
of their 10th-grade year must be enrolled in religious education for the 2016-2017
school year. This can take place either as part of a Catholic school curriculum or
through our parish Life Teen youth ministry program (or, for the adventurous,
both!). Enroll in Life Teen online at http://ihmatlanta.org/faith-formationenrollment. And while you’re at it, please consider joining the music and ministry
team for the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Mass, which will be moving in a youth-friendly
direction this fall (sign up at http://ihmatlanta.org/lifeteenband).
Adults who desire to be confirmed will follow a separate course of preparation.
Please contact Drew Denton in the parish office for more details.
In preparation for the 2016-2017 school year, we are also seeking additional
catechists for our faith formation programs. If you would like to help others
understand and live their faith more fully – whether young children, teenagers, or
adults – please let us know! Contact Drew Denton or Alicia Guerrero for more
information on how to get involved.
ADULT VOLUNTEERS FOR LIFE TEEN AND EDGE
This fall we will inaugurate the Life Teen (high school) and
The EDGE (middle school) ministries at IHM! We are
seeking for adults (18 years and older) to join us in this
exciting journey. Both groups will meet on Sunday evenings
right after the 5:00 p.m. Mass, from 6:15-7:30 p.m.
JUNE 26-30
MISSION POSSIBLE 2016
All rising 9th-12th graders are invited to accept the
challenge to serve this summer at Mission Possible! This is
a 5 day in-town mission trip that we do with the youth at St.
Oliver Plunkett Church in Snellville. The cost to attend is
$75 per teen. Come share your time and talent to help others
this summer.
Registration
forms
are
available
online
at
www.ihmatlanta.org/youth-ministry. Please contact Kathy
for more information.
ADULT CHAPERONES NEEDED!
A big part of having a successful Mission Possible,
is the help provided by the adults with transportation
and supervising work sites. Adults are NOT required
to stay overnight— FYI, the average work shifts are
from 8am-2pm, but once your group is done, you
may return home or better yet, stay with us for
dinner and evening activities! All chaperones must
complete the required volunteer forms and must be
background checked prior to participating. If you are
21 and over, and would like to participate in Mission
Possible this summer, please contact Kathy Guerrero
for more details.
You do not need any previous experience in youth ministry.
However, the only requirement is that all volunteers are
Safe Environment approved and have a background check
prior to becoming a volunteer. There is no age limit to
volunteer, but you must be at least a high school graduate. If
you are interested in working with the youth starting in
September, please contact Kathy Guerrero for more
information.
LIFE TEEN BAND
Calling all young musicians! Life Teen is coming soon this
fall and we are seeking teens that are interested in joining
the new Life Teen Band to play in the Sunday 5:00 p.m.
Life Teen Mass. Whether you play an instrument or sing,
this is your opportunity to come share your talents at IHM.
Other ministry positions needed for the Life Teen Mass
include: Altar Servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, Lectors, and Ministers of Hospitality.
To sign up, just take a minute and complete the online form
at www.ihmatlanta.org/lifeteenband. If you have any
questions, please contact Jeff Bush, Director of Liturgy &
Music at [email protected] or Kathy Guerrero, Youth

primer paso crucial.
