The Raymond Reminder - Fullerton School District
The Raymond Reminder Brought to you by Raymond’s PTA, Principal, Teachers and Students February 2015 “Run for Raymond” is Tomorrow (Feb 12) The 3rd Annual “Run for Raymond” jog-a-thon is tomorrow during the school day!!! Parents, come on out to help or cheer! Also, make sure your children wear appropriate clothing to jog! It’s really hard to run with pants falling down or slip-on flats sliding off. Good luck students and most of all, have a fun time running with your friends and teachers! Don’t forget your pledge cards! School Safety is our number 1 priority! As part of Raymond’s Safety Plan, we continue to practice Fire, Earthquake and Lock Down drills in order to be properly prepared to ensure student safety and well being for all. Every single time we have a drill, the children and staff practice and after the drill the staff debriefs and adjusts our drills for the next scheduled practice drill. The drills are held at different times of the day to allow practice opportunities in different scenarios of the day. Parents thank you for coming to the office to sign in prior to walking onto our campus. If you see someone on campus without a visitor badge or a staff badge, please report this to the office as soon as possible. Sprucing up the garden! We are all working together to keep our school safe so IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING! Our office welcomes your vigilant reporting. -Mrs. Felicitaciones, Steven! Adventures in Science Each year, in a partnership between the Fullerton School District, the Southern California College of Optometry and Raytheon, one boy from each FSD elementary and junior high school is selected to attend their Adventures in Science full day program. This year, Justen Rawlins from Mr. Jacobs’ class was selected to participate in the event which was held on Friday, January 30th at both Raytheon and the SoCal College of Optometry, recently renamed Marshall B. Ketchum University. It’s a fun and interesting “peek” into science-related careers while they work with scientists, engineers and doctors for the day! In order to be considered to attend, several sixth graders wrote essays on why they like to learn about science. Justin’s favorite part was holding a real cow eyeball! It’s not very often that opportunity comes around! He also saw a friend from another school at the event. Congratulations Justen! Next month, it’s the girls turn! After working on classroom science investigations for the last two months, fifth graders were invited to present their projects to students from six other elementary schools from around Orange County. Raymond fifth graders presented two different projects that centered around water. Students working with Ms. Porter designed and built water filters to determine which filter design would remove the most contaminates from polluted water. Students working with Ms. Watts compared water usage and plant growth of an aquaponic system (raising fish and plants) with that of a traditional soil-based farming system. Both projects provided a lot of hands-on science fun and interesting results. Ask any fifth grader about their project. They are experts! -Mrs. KINDE RGART E N NE WS Raymond’s Kindergarten students are working hard on their foundation! Money from last year and this year’s Student Council efforts will be used to purchase two new microphones and receivers for the MP Room and new umbrellas for our round tables! Keep saving boxtops! The Raymond Reminder Past Events Save the Garden! Have you noticed the garden lately? On a Saturday in December, Raymond parents, teachers and principal joined together to “Save our Garden”. After hearing it was in danger of being removed due to lack of maintenance and participation, the PTA got busy. Hours were spent talking, laughing and weeding, weeding, weeding.....and trimming. Come by Saturday, Feb. 21 during Saturday School, to do some more! Bring some plants! Thank you to the few Raymond families who helped out in December! Family Art Night Friday, January 30th was Family Art Night in the MP Room at Raymond and the families who attended had a great time! The Prince’s and their helpers put on a fun-filled evening with lots of art activities to try. Activities this year included the always popular “Clay Station” (there’s something about kids and squishing clay!) and the “Collage Station” as well as several new areas of art to try. One station gave creators a chance to make an iPod, iPhone or iPad stand out of wood. Another included Fullerton shop owner, Sally Lynch from Create From Scrap, who did an awesome job working with the kids in the area of print making. Also new to Raymond’s Family Art Night was Enrique, from Comic Book University, who had the kids making crazy comic characters. This is Kristy and Brian Prince’s last year of hosting the Family Art Night for Raymond. One of Kristy’s favorite parts of the event is seeing older kids who are now in Junior High, come back and still enjoy the activities. Another highlight is watching both parents and their children doing and creating art together. Thank you Kristy and Brian for your hard work and creativity in pulling this night together for several years at Raymond! BRANDON MUNOZ KRISTY PRINCE PA U L S A R G E N T LAUREN OLDFIELD ALL THE ARTS J O H N AT H A N S T. Las familias que atendieron la pasaron muy bien! 8
