The district of San Andrés (Sant Andreu district in Catalan) is the ninth (IX) of the ten districts into which Barcelona administratively. Its population is estimated at about 150 000 inhabitants, of whom 55,000 are in the old town of San Andrés. San Andres is the third district in extent, with an area of 653 hectares. Located in the north of the city, is limited by the river Besòs, making border between Barcelona, San Adrián and Santa Coloma, and the districts of nine neighborhoods, Horta-Guinardó and San Martín. The first written of Sant Andreu del Palomar is in the year 992, in a document which is recorded in a place called Palomar. Not until 1034 that the names appear together St. Andrew, patron of the parish, and Palomar. The town’s main wealth was agriculture irrigated by the water from the tenth century, the Rec Comtal reached him on his way between Montcada and Barcelona. Over the years it spread urbanization in small streets around the Rue Grande, main shaft and old Roman road. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, during the industrialization, already in Sant Andreu important companies requiring large areas precluded its location in the heart of Barcelona: Fabra i Coats, The Machinist, National Manufacturing Dyes ... yes like a lot of small businesses and shops. The economic dynamism of the neighborhood has been accompanied, as always, an important cultural activity that remains strong today. In the coming years the neighborhood will live great changes already underway. The environment management station AVE create extensive residential and tertiary spaces on either side of the railway line, and will connect neighborhoods and districts separated by the train for decades, through the large 3.5 km linear park that will be the new axis backbone of the entire area. Furthermore, the recovery of the ancient town of Sant Andreu barracks in Torres i Bages ride, will lead the development of a new residential complex of 2,000 homes, 40% of which will be protective, and numerous local facilities and citizens. The origins of the old factory, dating back to 1838, when Ferran Puig and Gibert built the popularly known factoruy Vapor del Fil. In 1903, after many changes in the structure of the company and the merger with British J and P Coats Ltd., one of the first foreign capital investors in the country, the company which will be called Compañía Anónima de Filaturas Fabra y Coats sees the light. Throughout most of the twentieth century it gave life and work for many people. The industrial complex of Fabra i Coats corresponds to a spinning (yarn and fabric factory) of the XIX century and it was part of the old town of Sant Andreu del Palomar (now District 9 - District Sant Andreu). The warehouse where the creation factory and the Center for Contemporary Art are located was built between 1910 and 1920 and has a structure of brick, with pillars and beams of laminated profiles and two attached towers containing the building communication nodes. In 1970 began the closures of facilities and laying off workers. The promoters of this project are the City Council and the Association of Bidó de Nous Barris. The City Council purchased the site of Fabra i Coats factory in December 2005. In the process of open participation in 2006 it was planned to allocate the central nave of the equipment enclosure to a national and international reference, and in 2008 the City Council decided to convert it into a creation factory. The project, also choose to convert the other buildings in a neighbourhood spaces as a nursery, a medical centre, spaces for neighbourhood associations and friends from Fabra i Coats ... thus the Fabra i Coats precinct returns to its space in the Neighbourhood Sant Andreu, providing employment and place of cultural and social exchange. 7 UBICACIÓN | LOCATION El espacio para el Festival eme3 será • eme3_plaza 1500 m2 • eme3 share-it : 800 m2 • eme3_debate and talks : 1000 m2 The space for the eme3 Festival will be • eme3_plaza 1500 sqm • eme3 share-it: 800 sqm • eme3_debate and talks: 1000 smq Gran parte del espacio exterior del recinto esta en desuso, por ese motivo este año hemos querido apoyar este lugar emblemático, haciendo la llamada a proyectos 2013 para activar el espacio público exterior eme3_plaza y transformarlo para que el barrio y la ciudad puedan compartir este verano un sinfín de actividades. Much of the space outside the Fabra i Coats is obsolete, that is why this year we wanted to support this project, making the call for projects 2013 to activate the outdoor space and transform eme3_plaza for the Sant Andreu neighbourhood and the city to share this summer multiple activities and events. The idea is to invent and build a flexible space, which is removable to store when not in use, throughout the summer, so the associations and groups can use and schedule events of different types, creating an urban garden, open air cinema, performances, dance, theater, etc.
