Happy New Year! Welcome back to school. What book are you reading? I just finished
The Leader In Me by Steven Covey. The focus of the book is how elementary school
students can be leaders in their school community. One of the many ways students do
this is by completing daily learning journals reflecting on their specific goals as well as
graphing their testing data each week. I strongly encourage you to talk to your child
about starting a learning journal at home.
Have you heard the acronym P.B.I.S? It stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Systems. We are in the middle of providing the staff at D.C.S with one full year of professional development to prepare for full implementation in the 2011-2010 academic school
year. I could not be more proud of our teachers and support staff modeling as lifelong
learners for our students as we are researching best practice around the nation and customizing it for our school.
Morning Program continues to move our children, staff and families forward in helping to
shape our school culture and climate. This month we are focusing on “Integrity” Please
talk to your child about what it takes to build integrity, especially in the group setting with
his/her peers.

Reader’s Inc.-Delaware Reads 1001 Books has officially started. We have already had
several parents sign-out their first bags. Pre-K, K, 1st, and 2nd grade students will be getting a detailed letter further explaining the importance of early child literacy at home.
Finally, special thanks to Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. McGovern for putting together some outstanding caroling and performances last month.

A los Amigos y Familias de la comunidad de “Delaware”,
¡Feliz año nuevo! Bienvenido de regreso a la escuela. ¿Qué libro está leyendo? Acabo de terminar The
Leader in Me escrito por Steven Covey. El objetivo del libro es ver como los estudiantes de la escuela primaria pueden ser líderes en su comunidad escolar. Una de las formas que muchos estudiantes hacen esto
es completando diariamente libretas de reflexión sobre sus objetivos específicos, así como gráficos de sus
notas/puntaciones obtenidas cada semana en las pruebas escolares. Yo os sugiero que hable con su hijo/a
sobre como iniciar un diario de aprendizaje en el hogar.
Han escuchado el acrónimo P.B.I.S.? Significa sistemas de intervención de comportamiento positivo. Estamos en medio de proveer un año completo (2010-2011) de conferencias al personal escolar en preparación
para la plena aplicación de intervención positiva. No puedo estar más orgulloso de nuestros profesores cual
son modelos para nuestros estudiantes ya que siempre están dispuestos a continuar su propio aprendizaje.
Juntos estamos investigando mejores prácticas nacionales en el área del comportamiento cual serán personalizadas para nuestra escuela.
Programa de la Mañana sigue ayudando a nuestros hijo/as, el personal y a las familias a avanzar en formación cultural y el clima positivo de la escuela. Este mes enfocamos en el tema de “la integridad”. Por
favor hable con su hijo/a sobre lo que se necesita para construir integridad, especialmente en con sus compañeros.
Reader’s Inc.-Delaware Lee 1001 libros comenzó oficialmente. Ya tuvimos varios padres quien buscaron
sus primeras bolsas de libros. Los estudiantes del jardín infantil (Pre-k y K) primer y segundo cursos van a
recibir una carta detallando y explicando más la importancia de la lectura o alfabetización temprana de niños
en la casa.
Por último, un agradecimiento especial a la Sra. Stevens y la Sra. McGovern por ser los líderes de la parranda y las actividades musicales del mes pasado.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! It is very hard to believe that 2011 is here already. Hope everyone had a good
vacation. Hope everyone is healthy and practicing healthy behaviors which include the following:
Remember to wash hands often...that means especially before eating, after using the bathroom and before coming
to school and before going to bed at night. Remember to use soap and warm water and scrub, scrub, scrub. Singing "happy
birthday" twice through (while scrubbing your hands, fingers and wrists) is about the length of time to wash (approx. 20 seconds). Be sure to rinse with warm water and dry with a towel or paper towel and to use the paper towel to turn off the faucet
and open the door. This is the best method to help you stay healthy. Also if you have a cold/cough be sure to cough or
sneeze into the bend of your elbow or shoulder and turn away from people that you may be with. Of course, tissue is best to
use if you have it. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss after meals and before going to bed at night. Eating fruits (apples)
are also very good for dental health.
Please be sure if your child is returning to school after being ill that he/she is fever free for 24 hours without
the aid of any medication (Tylenol, Motrin, etc.). If your child has vomited or has had diarrhea, again, please be sure that you
keep your child at home until it is gone (at least 12 - 24 hrs.)
Please be sure your child is up to date with all her/his immunizations including a flu shot. The pediatrician
will be able to tell you what immunizations are required for school and I am always available if you have any questions.
Temperatures vary so it is best to dress in layers for school. Hats, gloves and boots are very important items to
wear during the winter months.
Pre K, Kindergarton, Second and Fourth grade parents/guardians, please remember your child is required
to have a physical upon entering school. Pre K parents/guardians, your child's vision will be checked by the Northeast Association of the Blind on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. If you have not already done so, please
send in the consent form that was given to you by your child's teacher. If we do not receive a permission your child cannot
participate in this screening.
Please remember if your child needs to have medication in school we must have the MD order, parent permit and medication in the pharmacy container from the pharmacy. If your child needs an inhaler for school it will be returned
to you at the end of the school year. The same process is followed with each new school year.

! Feliz año nuevo ¡Es difícil creer que el año 2011 ya está aquí. Espero que todos hayan tenido una buena vacación.
Espero que todos estén saludables y que estén practicando comportamientos saludables que incluye lo siguiente:
Recuérdese de lavarse las manos con frecuencia como una regla para todos, especialmente: antes de comer,
después de ir al baño, antes de venir a la escuela, y en la noche antes de irse a dormir. Recuérdese de lavarse las manos
con agua tibia y utilizar jabón. Lávate las manos enérgicamente entre sí y no te dejes ningún rincón sin frotar: frótate los
lados de ambas manos, las muñecas, entre los dedos y alrededor de las uñas. Lávatelas durante unos 20 segundos —
aproximadamente lo que se tarda en cantar el “Cumpleaños feliz”, dos veces. Enjuágate las manos con agua tibia y
sécatelas bien con una toalla limpia y seca. Usa una toalla para cerrar el grifo y para abrir la puerta.
Si tienes gripe/resfriado o tos, después de soplarse la nariz, toser o estornudar, asegúrate de toser o estornudar en
tu codo o hombro, y aléjate de las personas con quien estas. Una peñuela de papel es lo mejor que puedes usar si los
tienes. Asegúrate de cepillarte los dientes y usar hilo dental después de comer y antes de irte a dormir. Comiendo frutas
(manzanas) también son maneras de mantener una buena salud dental.
Por favor de asegurarse de que si su hijo/a está regresando a la escuela después de una enfermedad, que él/ella
este sin fiebre por 24 horas sin la ayuda de medicamento (Tylenol, Motrin, etc.) Si su hijo/a esta vomitado o tiene diarrea,
asegúrese de mantenerlos en la casa hasta que se le pase (por lo menos 12 a 24 horas).
Asegúrese que su hijo/a tenga todas sus vacunas más recientes incluyendo la vacuna de la influenza. El pediatra le
puede informar sobre qué vacunas son necesarias para la escuela y yo siempre estoy disponible si usted tiene preguntas.
La temperatura varía y es mejor vestirse en capas para la escuela. Gorros, guantes, y botas son muy importantes
de utilizar durante los meses de invierno.
Pre K, Jardín Infantil, Segundo, y Cuarto Grado- padres y apoderados, por favor de recordarse que su hijo/a
necesita un físico al comienzo del año escolar. Los estudiantes de Pre K tendrán su vista revisada por la Asociación
Northeast de los Ciegos, el jueves, 6 de enero del 2011, entre las 9:30 y 11:30 a.m. Si usted no lo ha hecho, por favor de
regresar el permiso que le entrego la maestra de su hijo/a. Sin el permiso, su hijo/a no podrá participar en este examen.
Por favor de recordarse de que si su hijo/a necesita medicamento en la escuela, tenemos que tener un orden MD,
el permiso del padre, y la medicina en el recipiente de la farmacia. Si su hijo/a necesita un inhalador para la escuela, se le
regresara a usted al fin del año escolar. Este proceso es igual cada año escolar.

In the Classroom
First Grade - Dual Language
Ms. Avila
The month of November and December were very exciting months for first grade. In November we celebrated
Thanksgiving by having a Thanksgiving Feast. We wore Indian and Pilgrim hats, came together and gave
thanks for all the wonderful things that we have. The students gave thanks for their friends, parents, homes,
food, clothes and teacher! Thank you to all the parents that
sent in a dish and/or came in to help and enjoy our feast. In
December, the first grade students began writing realistic
fiction stories, can wait to read them! On Thursday, December 16 all the first grade classes (Ms. Avila, Mrs. Loomis and
Mrs. Lafountain) performed a holiday song during morning
program. They were fabulous! Ms. Avila’s first grade class
would like to wish you all a Happy Holiday season and a
Happy New Year!!
El mes de noviembre y diciembre fueron muy excitantes
para la clase de primer grado. En noviembre celebramos
en Día de Acción de Gracias y tuvimos una celebración de
acción de gracias. Nos pusimos gorros de indios y peregrinos, nos reunimos y dimos gracias por todas las cosas maravillosas que tenemos. ¡Los estudiantes dieron gracias por sus amigos, padres, casas, alimentos, ropa y profesor! Muchas gracias a todos los padres que dieron un plato o llegaron a ayudar y disfrutar de nuestra fiesta.
En diciembre, los estudiantes de primer grado comenzaron a escribir historias de ficción realista, no puedo
esperar a leerlos! El jueves, 16 de diciembre todas las clases de primer grado (Srta. Ávila, Sra. Loomis y la
Sra. Lafountain) cantaron una canción de las fiestas feriadas durante el Programa de Mañana. Estuvieron
fabulosos! ¡¡¡La clase de primer grado de la Srta. Avila le gustaría desearle una felices fiestas y un próspero
año nuevo!!!

In the Classroom
Spanish as a Second Language (SSL): All students prepared to simulate the very traditional and popular
festive experience that still takes place in Puerto Rico during the holiday season, a parranda.
On Monday, 12/20/2010, students brought a parranda to their homeroom and a classroom outside of the Dual
Language Program. They were very excited to share some of the information they had learned and to serenade familiar and new faces! Parents were invited to join their child’s group in dancing and singing! At the end
of a typical parranda, people who participated (parranderos) were offered an “asopao” which is soup/stew. At
the end of each parranda in school, we offered our student parranderos hot chocolate.
Español como segundo idioma (SSL): Todos los estudiantes se prepararon para simular la experiencia festiva muy tradicional y popular que aún se lleva a cabo en Puerto Rico durante la temporada de fiestas, una
parranda. El lunes, 20/12/2010, los estudiantes le llevaron una parranda a sus salones, incluyendo uno fuera
del programa bilingüe. ¡Estaban muy emocionados compartiendo la información que aprendieron y llevándoles
una serenata a sus viejos y nuevos amigos. ¡Los padres/apoderados fueron invitados a unirse al grupo de su
hijo/a bailando y cantando! Al final de una parranda típica, se le ofrece un “asopao”, que es una sopa, a las
personas que han participado (parranderos). Al final de cada parranda en la escuela, les ofrecimos chocolate
caliente a nuestros estudiantes parranderos.

Ask the Reading Teachers
“I’m thinking of giving my child prizes for every book she reads. Won’t that motivate my child to read
more?”
We want children to love reading. Giving prizes might motivate your child to read more at first, but it’s so important that they find enjoyment in reading for its own sake, and prizes can’t guarantee that. When we offer kids
pizza, stickers, or other prizes for reading a certain number of books, we can actually send a message that reading is something unpleasant so we have to resort to prizes to get them to read. Children should be motivated to
read because they enjoy books and reading, not because they might get a prize if they read. Also, when kids are
counting the number of books they read in a race to see who can read the most, they often choose books that are
way below the difficulty of what they should be reading. They sacrifice the quality for quantity.
When you take your child to the library or a bookstore, spend some time finding books your child enjoys.
Ask what your child wants to learn more about or what kind of books they like to read. Make a special time each
evening for you and your child to sit down and read together. Our goal is to have children get intrinsic pleasure
from reading rather than only reading for extrinsic rewards. A great deal of research shows that incentive programs may actually be detrimental and cause children to like reading even less.

más?"
Queremos que a los/as niños/as les guste leer. Dándole premios podría motivarlos/las a leer más al principio, pero es muy importante que lean porque lo disfrutan y los premios no pueden garantizar eso. Cuando ofrecemos pizza, pegatinas u otros premios a los/as niños/as por leer un cierto número de libros, realmente podríamos estar enviando un mensaje de que la lectura es algo desagradable y por tanto tenemos que recurrir a los
premios para que lean. Los niños/as deben estar motivados a leer porque gozan de los libros y la lectura y no
porque podría obtener un premio si leen. También, cuando los niños/as están contando el número de libros que
leen para ver quién puede leer más, a menudo eligen libros que están muy por debajo de la dificultad de lo que
debe leer. Sacrifican la calidad por la cantidad.
Cuando usted lleva a su niño/a a la biblioteca o a una tienda de libros, pase algún tiempo encontrando
libros que su niño/a disfruta. Pregúntele lo que quiere aprender o qué tipo de libros le gusta leer. Saque un tiempo especial cada noche para sentarse a leer junto con su niño/a. Nuestro objetivo es que los/as niños/as sientan
placer intrínseco leyendo en lugar de sólo leer para las recompensas extrínsecas. Una gran cantidad de estudios
muestran que los programas de incentivo realmente pueden ser perjudicial y causar que a los/as niños/as les
guste leer menos.

Enrichment Programs
D.E.A.R
We take time, once a week, to incorporate D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) in our school. It is a time when
we get to have quiet time to enjoy our favorite book.

Since the beginning of the school year, different students from fourth and fifth grades have taken the responsibility, on a voluntary basis, of helping our school community get started every day. Under the direction of Mrs.
Wislous, the students lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and inform us of the day’s lunch menu, in English and
Spanish. They also report on current events happening at DCS. They do a fantastic job. Don’t be surprised if one
of them lands a job on a radio station in the Capital Region!

Desde el comienzo del año escolar, diferentes estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado han asumido la responsabilidad, voluntariamente, de ayudar a nuestra comunidad escolar a comenzar cada día. Bajo la dirección de la Sra.
Wislous, los estudiantes nos guían en la Promesa de la Alianza e informan del menú para el almuerzo del día,
en español e inglés. Ellos también nos informan sobre los eventos que ocurren en DCS. Hacen un trabajo fantástico. ¡No se sorprenda si uno de ellos termina trabajando en una estación de radio en la región de la capital!

The DCS’ Chorus brings smiles to the school community
Mrs. McGovern and the DCS chorus delighted us with some holiday caroling as they made their way through
our hallways.

La Sra. McGovern y el coro DCS nos deleitó con algunos villancicos festivos según hicieron su camino a través
de nuestros pasillos.
Spelling Bee
We had our School-wide Spelling Bee on Friday, December 17th. There were 9 students who participated from
grades 4th and 5th. The students who participated were: Keyarra Daniels, Ivannah Kornegay, Jeffrey Lembo,
Elijaha Fallen, Uni McCall, Steven Arias, Elikhad Yahudah-Edwards, Rahsiy Richards and Janelcy Popo. The
winner was Jeffrey Lembo from Miss Zielinski’s 4th grade and with runner up is Rahsiy Richards from Ms. Hans
5th grade class. The District Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Hacket Middle School.
Competencia de Ortografía
Tuvimos nuestra Competencia del Ortografía de DCS viernes el 17 de diciembre. Hubo 9 estudiantes que participaron de los grados 4 y 5. Los estudiantes que participaron fueron: Keyarra Daniels, Ivannah Kornegay,

Teachers as Learners
Many teachers had a unique opportunity in the month of November to come together to share and continue to
learn strategies that enhance the learning environment in the classrooms. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lyons,
Mrs. Militello, Mrs. Castle, Ms. Avila, Ms. Iorio, and Mrs. Wislous a number of ideas were presented to the
teachers and time was given to develop teaching tools to use in their classrooms.

Muchos/as maestros/as tuvieron una oportunidad única de reunirse en el mes de noviembre para compartir y
continuar aprendiendo estrategias que ayudan a mejorar el proceso de aprendizaje en sus salones. Bajo la dirección de la Sra. Lyons, Sra. Militello, Sra. Castle, la Srta. Ávila, Srta. Iorio y la Sra. Wislous una serie de ideas

Greetings from the Music Department!
We had a wonderful display of Delaware Community School’s musical talent on December 7th! The students in
the Band, Orchestra and Chorus performed for their peer and families in our gymnasium. They worked really
hard since the beginning of the school year and they did a fantastic job! We are all very proud of their hard work
and accomplishments. WE can’t wait to see their performance in the Spring time!

¡Tuvimos una maravillosa muestra de talento musical de la Escuela de la Comunidad de “Delaware” el 7 de
diciembre! Los estudiantes en la banda, la orquesta y el coro presentaron un concierto para sus compañeros y
familiares en nuestro gimnasio. ¡Ellos trabajaron realmente fuerte desde el comienzo del año escolar e hicieron
un trabajo fantástico! Estamos muy orgullosos de sus esfuerzos y logros. ¡Apenas podemos esperar a ver su
desempeño en el concierto en la primavera!

After School Physical Education Program
Delaware Community School will be offering an After School Physical Education Program for 4th and 5th grade
students on Tuesday Afternoons from 3:45-4:45. The program begins on January 11th and is open to the first 20
students who return their permission slips to Mr. Kearnan.
*Permission slips will be handed out in P.E. classes during the week of January 3rd
Give a Child a Gift
On December 4th and 5th, the "Give a Child a Gift" Committee wrapped gifts at Barnes and Noble (Colonie Center
Mall) to raise money to purchase holiday gifts for several students at Delaware Community School. We are very
happy to report that we were able to raise enough money to purchase books for them.
A big thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Castle, Ms. Kelly, Ms. Avila, Mrs. Spilman, Ms. Zielenski, Mrs. Daniels,
Ms. Young, Mrs. Short, Mrs. Wislous, Mr. Osorio, Mrs. DeNyse and Mrs. Valentine for donating their time to this
worthy cause.
El 4 y 5 de diciembre, el comité de "Give a Child a Gift" envolvió regalos en “Barnes and Noble” (en el centro comercial de Colonie ) para recaudar fondos para comprar regalos a varios estudiantes de la escuela de comunidad
de “Delaware” durante los días festivos. Nos complace informar que pudimos recaudar suficiente dinero para comprarles libros.
