Del Padre Michael Shanahan, nuestro Párroco
On this First Sunday of Lent it is helpful to remember the three main aspects that characterize this time of
repentance in the Church: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These three practices are intended to lead us on
the journey to knowing the Lord better in our lives. At
the same time this is clearly a time of transition in our
universal Church.
Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation
as Pope on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes. It was strange that we were already
scheduled to come together as a community of
faith for a healing Mass on the same day that the
Holy Father’s announcement. Pope Benedict XVI
concluded after significant prayer and reflection
that his strength and age no longer allowed him to continue his ministry over the universal Church. There has
not been a resignation of a Pope in more than 600 years
in the Church. It has been made clear that this decision
is not due to any particular illness but rather to a decline of strength. In resigning, the Holy Father referred to
the rapid changes of modern life and the deep questions that
we experience as people of faith. His resignation came as
a surprise to the entire world. In the end, it calls us to
prayer again, particularly as we enter into Lent.
In today’s Gospel, we take a first hand look at the
temptations faced by Jesus in the desert. Our prayer
may be that we can understand the implications of this
Gospel for our own lives. How are you tempted to
abandon trust in God and to look for strength and
power from non godly sources? In entering the desert,
Jesus shows us the importance of choosing a path of
dispossession and insecurity. The adversary offers us
control in life but Jesus points the way to complete surrender and dependence on God’s grace in our lives.
The tempter offers the glory of being popular and cherished by all but Jesus points the way of vulnerability
and the cross. Many of us don’t have the choice of high
office or personal wealth as the way to power over others. But we can slip into cynicism and hopelessness
when faced with life’s challenges. Jesus points to another way of living. Although this is the same message
we hear at Lent every year, we are the ones who are
facing different circumstances each year. This Lent is
new every year.
Again, I invite you to consider participating in our
Lenten Missions this year. Fr. Carlos Monsalve will
speak each Friday evening in Spanish at 7:30 p.m.
Also Fr. Ed O’Shea will offer a bi-lingual mission entitled: “Holy Gifts for Holy People. Welcome to the Table of the Lord.” May this Lenten Season be spirit
filled for all of us.
En este Primer Domingo de Cuaresma recordemos los
tres aspectos principales en este tiempo de arrepentimiento en la Iglesia: oración, ayuno y actos de caridad.
Estas practices nos guían en la jornada para conocer major a Dios en nuestras vidas. Al mismo tiempo, es claramente un tiempo de transición en la Iglesia Universal.
El Papa Benedicto XVI oficialmente resignó
como Papa el 11 de Febrero, día de la Fiesta de
Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Es extraño que ya
estábamos comprometidos a reunirnos como comunidad de fe para una misa de sanación en el mismo día
que el Santo Padre hizo el anuncio de su renuncia.
El Papa Benedicto XVI concluyó después de una
piadosa oración y reflexión que su salud y edad ya no
le permitían continuar su ministerio sobre la Iglesia
Universal. No ha habido una renuncia papal en más de
600 años en la Iglesia. Se ha hecho bien claro que esta
decision no se debe a una enfermedad particular sino en la
disminución de su salud. Al renunciar, el Santo Padre se
refirió a los rápidos cambios de la vida moderna y a las
profundas preguntas que encaramos como personas de fe.
Su renuncia vino como sorpresa total para el mundo entero. Al final, se nos llama a la oración de Nuevo, particularmente ahora que entramos a la Cuaresma.
En el Evangelio de hoy examinamos las tentaciones
que Jesús enfrentó en el desierto. Nuestra súplica es que
podamos comprender las implicaciones de este Evangelio
en nuestras propias vidas. ¿Cómo son tentados ustedes a
abandonar su confianza en Dios y a buscar fuerza y poder
en recursos materiales? Cuando se internó en el desierto
Jesús nos mostró la importancia de escoger un camino de
desposeimiento e inseguridad. El adversario nos ofrece
control en la vida pero Jesús señala el camino para completar la rendición y dependencia en la gracia de Dios en
nuestras vidas. El tentador ofrece la gloria de ser popular
y adorado por todos, pero Jesús señala el camino de vulnerabilidad y la cruz. La mayoría de nosotros no tenemos
la opción de una alta posición o fortuna personal para
tener poder sobre otros. Y podemos caer en sentimientos
de cinicismo y desesperanza cuando hacemos frente los
desafíos de la vida. Jesús nos anima a otro modo de vida.
Aunque este es el mismo mensaje que escuchamos en la
Cuaresma cada año, somos nosotros los que encaramos
diferentes circunstancias cada año. Esta Cuaresma es
nueva cada año.
Otra vez más los invito a que consideren su participación en las misiones de la Cuaresma de este año. El
Padre Carlos Monsalve hablará todos los viernes a las
7:30 p.m. y el Padre Ed O’Shea ofrecerá una misión bilingue titulada: “Santos Dones para el Pueblo Santo. Bienvenidos a la Mesa del Señor.”
Que esta temporada de la Cuaresma nos llene del
Santo Espíritu para todos.
