Parish Social Ministry We have been hearing about faith for the last couple of weeks and that Parish Social Ministry states that our response should flow clearly from our faith. We, as a community, are called to witness God’s love and presence in our lives by standing up for the poor, the sick, and the lame as we help meet their physical and spiritual needs. How can we do that? Are we willing to group with other members of our community to create solutions? Pope Francis clearly told the youth of our world not to sit and wait but to become active participants in creating change. Are you willing to take that step? We will shortly introduce two programs created by the US Catholic Bishops and by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development that will help us learn and take action. Stay tune and check the bulletin for more information in the near future. Viviendo nuestra fe….. LITURGICAL MINISTERS……. The Archdiocese has let us know that we have many liturgical ministers that have not fulfilled the Virtus requirements, that have never taken the first course, have never taken the update, or that now need to take the first course again because they never took the update on time. If they want to be a volunteer in any parish in this Archdiocese they must take Virtus. Please speak to your ministry coordinator and get some information about what course you need and how to register for that course. If you do not participate in Virtus, YOU WILL NOT BE SCHEDULED TO DO YOUR MINISTRY. Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, “Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur. As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. Moses’hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Responsorial Psalm PS 121 R. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth Second Reading 2 TM 3:14-4:2 Beloved: Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. Gospel LK 18:1-8 Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’” The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” You can visit these offices for parish information, to pick up forms, or to drop off materials. Please use the ramp on the east side to access these offices until we have constructed a walkway leading to the steps. We will also continue to use the existing parish offices for these purposes, as well as for other business and for appointments. Our Faith Formation team is now also located in the new offices. For all matters relating to CCE or sacrament preparation, please come to the new offices. The old Faith Formation offices in the PLC will be converted to a meeting room which will be available to parish organizations. We are going through some computer software changes and we ask to you be patient with us as we adapt to the changes. The Archdiocese has adopted a new accounting system which went into operation on October 1 st and the parish has moved to compatible software for parish management. These changes are all positive, but they do take some getting used to. One element of the new parish management system is an improved system of registration which we will be using for a parish census in 2017. If you are already registered, we will be asking you to update your information. If you have not yet registered, this new system makes it easy to do so. We want to know that you are part of our parish family. We will be giving much more information about the new system in the coming months, but if you would like to get a jump on things, you can use the ConnectNow link on the parish website or go to https://connectnow.parishsoft.com/galveston/Register.aspx. Finally, a reminder: If you (or your group) would like to conduct a fund-raiser of any kind – a collection, a sale, a raffle, etc. - on parish property, you must have my approval, the approval of the pastor. This is to ensure that everything is in compliance with state law and Archdiocesan regulations and to avoid conflicts with other parish activities. May our Blessed Mother intercede for us in this month of the Rosary. Fr. P. Joe 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Pius V Catholic Church October 16, 2016 November is just around the corner and the Mass schedule for All Saints and All Souls days will change. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship Formando la conciencia para ser ciudadanos fieles In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. As Catholics, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to any political party or interest group. In today’s environment, Catholics may feel politically disenfranchised, sensing that no party and few candidates fully share our comprehensive commitment to human life and dignity. This should not discourage us. On the contrary, it makes our obligation to act all the more urgent. Catholic lay women and men need to act on the Church’s moral principles and become more involved: running for office, working within political parties, and communicating concerns to elected officials. Even those who cannot vote should raise their voices on matters that affect their lives and the common good. Faithful citizenship is an ongoing responsibility, not just an election year duty. Have a Really great day! 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
