“God Provides!”
Dear Friends,
subtly reminded him that God was (and is) in charge. “Give it to the people
to eat.” “Have the people recline.” They both did, albeit reluctantly, and both
were amazed that when they shared what they had, God made it enough.
The humanness, the wisdom, the candor and
the accuracy of the Psalmist have always struck me.
If you ever have time to pick up the Bible, I suggest
praying with the Psalms. Songs of praise and thanks,
and sorrow and petition, the Psalms echo the feelings
of the human heart. Today’s Psalm reminds us of God’s
beneficence and providence. The readings and Gospel
that accompany it challenge us to put our trust in the Lord’s goodness and to
live our lives as true disciples.
The boy in the Gospel could have done many things when Phillip
approached him for his bread and fish. He could have agreed with Phillip
and the others about the impracticality of sharing so little with so many and
refused to share the little he had. He could have offered one or two loaves
and kept the rest for his family. He didn’t. He gave all that he had and God
made it enough. I think we sometimes might have thoughts of holding back,
of not giving our time, talent and treasure to the extent that we really can.
The boy gives us a great model. He gave, without counting the cost. With his
generous, fearless help, the hand of the Lord fed the crowd. When we give
generously and fearlessly of ourselves, God will do the same.
“The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.” We sing that refrain
five times between the first and second reading today. Do we really believe
what we are singing? Do we really trust in the providence of God? If we
do, and when we do we are able to live more joyful, generous lives. When
we allow fear and uncertainty to rule, we hold tightly to what we have and
hesitate to let go and share. I often think of the prayer my mother said daily
when she was ill. It helped her to put her trust in the providence of God. She
told us a thousand times as we were growing up, and she needed to put her
faith in it in a special way during her illness: “GOD PROVIDES!” The prayer
is really a reminder from Saint Francis De Sales. I have shared it with you
before, but it bears sharing again.
Humility and generosity make this happen. When we let go of our
selfish agendas, and whatever euphemisms we use for them, and truly empty
ourselves and abandon ourselves to the will of God, we can be generous of
spirit and in life. When we get stuck in selfishness and fear, when we allow
willfulness to rule, it is then that we are unable to cooperate with God’s
loving plan. This is more than philosophy. It can be practiced daily and in
the life of the parish and the Church. We need to be concerned with the
good of ALL, not a particular group within the parish or within the Church
Universal.
Do not look forward to what might happen tomorrow...
The same everlasting Father who cares for you today
will take care of you tomorrow
and every day.
Either He will shield you from suffering
or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace then and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.
Finally, let’s allow the words of Saint Paul to impel our actions this
week. “I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you
have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another
through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.” We
can ask ourselves “Am I humble?” “Am I gentle?” “Am I a patient?” “Am I
loving?” “Am I peaceful?” Hopefully we can answer all the questions with a
resounding YES!
When we rid ourselves of anxiety, when we really do not allow anything
to weigh us down with worry, we live more liberated lives. We become free.
When we are free we can live more generously, sharing what we have with
those who need it.

In the sharing bread stories we have in the first reading and Gospel,
fear might have entered in. The man bringing bread to Elisha, and Phillip
counting the loaves the young boy possessed, both doubted and were
certainly untrusting of the promise and providence of God. They needed a
little encouragement. Elisha told the man and Jesus encouraged Phillip and
P.S. We leave on pilgrimage to Lourdes next Sunday. The 11:30am Mass
will be a bilingual departure Mass for the pilgrims and their families. As

Join the Peace and Justice, Paz y Justicia Commission for an evening
of service at Catholic Charities Tuesday night supper on July 28th.
Typically 130 hungry guests are served during Tuesday night
supper. This is a great opportunity to live out our gospel call in a
meaningful way.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
Registration forms and tuition information for our Religious Education
program are available in both the rectory office and on our website at
www.stjohnberchmans.org. Classes take place on Saturday mornings
from 9am-10:30am and will begin on Saturday, September 12th. If you
have any questions about the SJB Religious Education Program please
contact the rectory office. The registration fee will be waived if the forms
are returned before the first day of classes.

Following the meal the SJB Peace and Justice, Paz y Justicia
commission will share a meal together and reflect on the experience.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME CATHOLIC?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey for adults
who would like to be baptized, receive first Holy Communion and be
confirmed. The RCIA process can also help you complete the necessary
steps to become a member of the Catholic Church if you were baptized
in another Christian denomination.
On August 15th, the Catholic Church celebrates the
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will honor this feast
with a special bilingual Mass at 9:00am on SATURDAY,
AUGUST 14TH. Please join us.
The SJB RCIA program will meet from late September through April,
and the sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil on March 26, 2016.
The process of RCIA is a journey of faith, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a
time to tell stories, ask questions, meet new friends and explore prayer
and scripture.
If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA, if you know of
anyone who might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing to
help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact the parish office.
Parish Staffing Update
Beginning next week, Shelagh Donoghue will join our parish
staff as the Director of Faith Formation and Education. Shelagh
will be responsible for Religious Education, the RCIA program,
Sacramental Prep and other adult formation and evangelization
opportunities.
Also next week, parishioner Patricia Danielak will join the school
staff as Assistant Principal. Amanda Sullivan will remain at the
school and take on the new role of Director of Admissions.
When you see Amanda in the coming weeks, be sure to
congratulate her on her new position. When you have an
opportunity to meet Shelagh and Patricia, be sure to welcome
them to their new roles and offer whatever assistance you can.
We are grateful for the dedication of all three.

¡Dios Proporciona!
Queridos Amigos,
ánimo. Eliseo le dijo al hombre y Jesús animó a Felipe y le recordó sutilmente que
Dios estaba (y está) a cargo. “Dáselos a la gente para que coman.” “Que la gente
descanse.” Ambos lo hicieron, aunque de mala gana, y ambos se sorprendieron de
que cuando compartían lo que tenían, Dios hacia que alcanzara para todos.
La humanidad, la sabiduría, la sinceridad y la
exactitud del salmista siempre me llaman la atención. Si
alguna vez tiene tiempo para leer la Biblia, le sugiero orar
con los salmos. Los cantos de alabanza y agradecimiento, de
dolor y petición, los Salmos hacen eco de los sentimientos
del corazón humano. El Salmo de hoy nos recuerda la
beneficencia y la providencia de Dios. Las lecturas y el
Evangelio que lo acompañan nos desafían a poner nuestra
confianza en la bondad del Señor y a vivir nuestras vidas como verdaderos
discípulos.
El muchacho en el Evangelio podría haber hecho muchas cosas cuando
Felipe se acercó a él pidiéndole su pan y pescado. Él pudo coincidir con Felipe y
los demás acerca de la inconveniencia de compartir lo poco con tantos y negarse
a compartir lo poco que tenía. Él podría haber ofrecido uno o dos panes y guardar
el resto para su familia. Él no lo hizo. Él dio todo lo que tenía y Dios hizo lo
suficiente. Pienso que puede ser que tengamos a veces pensamientos de avaricia,
de no dar nuestro talento, tiempo y dinero hasta el punto en que realmente
podemos. El muchacho nos da un gran ejemplo. El dio, sin importar el costo. Con
su generosa ayuda sin miedo, la mano del Señor alimentó a la multitud. Cuando
damos generosamente y sin miedo de nosotros mismos, Dios hará lo mismo.
“Abres tú la mano, Señor, y nos sacias de favores.” Cantamos esa frase cinco veces
entre la primera y la segunda lectura de hoy. ¿Realmente creemos lo que estamos
cantando? ¿Realmente confiamos en la providencia de Dios? Si lo hacemos, y
cuando lo hacemos podemos vivir vidas generosas y alegres. Cuando permitimos
que el miedo y la incertidumbre gobiernen, nos apegamos firmemente a lo que
tenemos y dudamos en deshacernos de ello y no compartimos. A menudo pienso
en la oración que mi madre decía todos los días cuando estaba enferma. Le ayudó
a poner su confianza en la providencia de Dios. Ella nos decía una y mil veces
cuando estábamos creciendo, necesitaba poner su fe en Él de una manera especial
durante su enfermedad: “¡DIOS PROPORCIONA!” La oración es realmente un
recordatorio de San Francis de Sales. Lo he compartido con usted anteriormente,
pero vale la pena compartir de nuevo.
La humildad y la generosidad hacen que esto suceda. Cuando nos
desprendemos de nuestras agendas egoístas, y cualesquiera que sean los
eufemismos que utilizamos para estas, y verdaderamente las abandonamos y nos
ponemos a la voluntad de Dios, podemos ser generosos de espíritu y vida. Cuando
nos quedamos atrapados en el egoísmo y el miedo, cuando permitimos que la
voluntad gobierne, es entonces que no podemos cooperar con el plan amoroso
de Dios. Esto es más que filosofía. Puede ser practicado diariamente y en la vida
de la parroquia y de la Iglesia.Tenemos que estar preocupados por el bienestar de
todos, no de un grupo particular dentro de la parroquia o de la Iglesia Universal.
Finalmente, permitamos que las palabras de San Pablo impulsen nuestras
acciones esta semana. “Yo, prisionero por la causa del Señor, los exhorto a que lleven
una vida digna del llamamiento que han recibido. Sean siempre humildes y amables, sean
comprensivos y sopórtense mutuamente con amor; esfuércense en mantenerse unidos en
el espíritu con el vinculo de la paz.” Podemos preguntarnos “¿Soy humilde?” “¿Soy
gentil?” “¿Soy paciente?” “¿Estoy amando?” “¿Estoy en paz?” Espero que podamos
responder a todas las preguntas con un rotundo ¡SÍ!
No temas lo que pueda pasar mañana;
el mismo Padre comprehensivo
quien te cuida y vela hoy
Te cuidará entonces y en cada día.
O te protegerá de sufrimiento
o te dará la fuerza infalible para soportarlo.
Estad en paz,y deja de lado todo
pensamiento e imaginaciones ansiosas.
Paz,
Cuando nos deshacemos de la ansiedad, cuando realmente no permitimos
que la preocupación nos agobie, vivimos vidas más liberadas. Llegamos a ser
libres. Cuando somos libres podemos vivir generosamente, compartiendo lo que
tenemos con aquellos que lo necesitan.

desconfiaban de la promesa y providencia de Dios. Ellos necesitaban un poco de
