Science, Professor of Physics and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He supervised
7 Master theses and 13 PhD theses at UB, at Boston University and UFRGS. He is PI
in European, Spanish and Catalan projects, with cumulative funds for more than 2
millions e. He organized 15 international conferences and chaired 8 in the last 9 years,
on subject including Physical Biology and Molecular Biophysics. He is editor of two
and referee for 34 international journals —including PNAS, PlosOne, PRL, JCP—and for
12 international grant agencies (NSF-US, EPSRC-UK, SNSF-CH, NRF-SG ...).
His research focuses on complex liquids and the role of water in nanoscopic and
biological systems. He uses theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, often
collaborating with experimental groups.
He made 81 peer-reviewed publications, including book chapters, with 64 papers
in international scientific journals, and gave 92 Invited Talks. He edited “Aspects of
Physical Biology: Biological Water, Protein Solutions, Transport and Replication”
(Springer 2008) and published in high-impact journals such as Nature, PNAS, PRL
and Sci Rep with three of his papers listed among the Highly Cited Papers in Physics,
and two in the Core Papers in Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition ... Supercooled Water
of the last years2 . He was cited more than 2800 times with H-index 31 on Google

Research Activities
Research Topics
1992 - 1998: Clusters in spin glasses
Theoretical study of noble metal alloys with magnetic impurities, that
turns out to be the paradigm of slow systems as consequence of the
abundance of metastable states.
Research on:
a: Efficient Cluster Monte Carlo dynamics.
b: Invasion Percolation (Self Organized Criticality) Monte Carlo dynamics.
Research articles in colaboration with: V. Cataudella (6), R.
Chirone (1), A. Coniglio (6), M. Nicodemi (4), P. Salatino (1), A. Scala
(4) (Università “Federico II”, Napoli).
Production: 4 Peer-Reviewed Research Articles (PRL, PRE) + 3
Conference Proceedings.
1996 - 2000: Frustrated Percolation and Glass Transition
Theoretical approach with Monte Carlo methods and Frustrated Percolation to the dynamics and thermodynamics aspects of the Glass
Transition.
a: Geometrical characterization of the Frustrated Percolation.
b: Study of the precursor phenomena of the Glass Transition.
c: Analysis of the Potts Spin Glass and role of the Griffiths’ Temperature.
Research articles in colaboration with: A. Coniglio (5), A. de
Candia (2), A. Fierro (2) (Università “Federico II”, Napoli).
Production: 7 Peer-Reviewed Research Articles (PRE, JPA) (with 2
single-author papers).
1998 - 2005: Solid State Complex Materials
We consider: (1) Superconducting Josephson’s Junctions and the study
28
Curriculum Vitae – Giancarlo Franzese
of the proximity effect under the effect of a magnetic field at low temperature, and analysis of the induced next-nearest-neighbors frustration.
We found a new reentrant Kosterliz - Thouless - Berezinskii phase transition. (2) Kondo effect in metal nanoparticles, with a Quantum Monte
Carlo study of the parity effect due to the electrons’ discrete energy
levels in a metal nanoparticle. We studied how the Kondo effect, i.e.
the magnetic susceptibility saturation of an impurity, changes under
these conditions. (3) Elastomagnetic systems, with a theoretical and
experimental study of the concentration effects in the linear response
of new compounds of magnetic microparticles dispersed in silicon. Our
goal was to optimize the production and the application of these new
compounds.
Research articles in colaboration with: G. Ausanio (1), V. Cataudella (2) L. De Arcangelis (1), R. Fazio (3) V. Iannotti (1), S.E. Korshunov (2), L. Lanotte (1), C. Luponio Jr. (1), R. Raimondi (1)
(Landau Institute Moscow, or Un. Napoli, or Un. Catania - S.N. Pisa
- SISSA Trieste, or Un. Roma III).
Production: 4 Peer-Reviewed Research Articles (PRB, EPL).
2000 - ongoing: Phase diagram of water and other anomalous liquids
Water, silica and other liquids establish a dynamic bond-network that
is related to their anomalies. I developed a model and I studied its
phase diagram with analytic and Monte Carlo methods, clarifying that
the bond correlation implies the coexistence between two liquids with
different densities and the existence of a liquid-liquid critical point.

(8 as first author; 1 as single author; 12 as leading author).
2000 - ongoing: Liquid-liquid phase transitions and liquids without anomalies
With analytic and molecular dynamics simulations techniques, we study
29

the possibility of a liquid-liquid phase transition in systems such as protein solutions, liquid metals or colloids, that do not necessarily display
density anomalies.
Research articles in colaboration with: S. V. Buldyrev (7), N.

2002 - ongoing: Glass Transition and Energy Landscape
We study the Glass Transition in supercooled liquids, by using the
Mode Coupling theory and the energy landscape paradigm. We analyze
the case of water and, for disordered spin systems, the effect of entropy
barriers.
Research articles in colaboration with: S. V. Buldyrev (3), N.

Citation indices: H index = 29, V index = 2.12 (> 1 =
success), M index = 1.38
The Hirsch’s citation index H (i.e. the number of publications with more
citations than their ranking in the list of most cited publications) is H=29 10 .
The Vaidya’s V index is V=2.11. V>1 indicates a successful researcher 11 .
The V index is calculated on the basis of the H index as follows.
The Academic Age (number of years doing reserach) is NY =21.
The Hirsc’s M index is M=H/NY =1.38 12 .
Number of hours devoted to teaching [see Fig.1 pag. 6] and administration
NT = 1075 × 2 + NY × (365 − 30)/7 × 5 × 2 = 12200
The Proportion of time devoted to research (average over Academic Age)
is P=(NY × 1650 − NT )/(NY × 1650)=0.65
The Vaidya’s V index is V=H/(NY × P )=2.12
Personal Impact Factor ' 2 × PRL Impact Factor
Editorial conventions: in the fields of Physics of Molecular Liquids, Biological Physics, Statistical Physics of Nanosystems and Numerical Simulations,
authors are not conventionally listed in alphabetical order but on the basis of
their contribution. First and second authors: main researchers that have
carried out the body of the research and often act as corresponding authors.
Last author: leading author coordinating the research and responsible for
the main scientific ideas.
Total number of citations NC =2514.
Total number of publications (including preprints on cond-mat archive that
are counted in Google Scholar) NP =93.
Average number of citations per article NC /NP =27.
Number of publications being the first or second author N1 =51.
Number of publications as the last author N∞ =25.

Figure 2: Source: Top: scholar.google.com (14/10/2014); Bottom: ISI Web
of Science (14/10/2014).
Total number of coauthors NA =369.
Average number of citations per author NC /NA =6.81.
Personal Contribution PC=[N1 /NP + NP /NA + N∞ /(4NP )]/[1 + NP /NA +
1/4]= 57.8%: the Personal contribution corresponds to the % of the total
impact of publications. The Personal contribution is calculated assigning to
each article a score 1 + 1/(NA /NP ) + 1/4, divided as folows: 1 for the 1st
or 2nd author, 1/4 for the last author, 1/(NA /NP ) for any author (including
the 1st and the last).
Personal Impact Factor PIF=NC /NP ×PC=15.62.
The PIF should be compare with a reference IF in the field, such as the
Physical Review Letters IF=7.73.
Hence, my Personal Impact Factor is approximately 2 time the Physical
Review Letters Impact Factor (PIF/IFPRL =2.02).
