Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

Daily Reflections for Advent & Christmas
—Waiting in Joyful Hope
Meditation: How do you assess people’s worth? How does your judgment affect the
way you treat them?
Prayer: O God, who alone sees the depths of the human heart, free us from the burden of judging others by false standards and grant us the grace to see and treat
everyone as your chosen child.

Year of Mercy
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Fourth Sunday of Advent
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year
be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of
mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our
midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such
an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed
mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain,
to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism
and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our
Christmas season this Jubilee Year.

CHRIST CATHEDRAL
DRAMA SERIES
ST. MAXIMILIAN
JANUARY 22-24, 2016
Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz tells the gripping story of the Polish priest
whose legendary actions offer a profound example of Christ-like courage in the face of evil.
In 1941, Father Maximilian Kolbe was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the infamous
Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. There he was forced into slave labor, tortured, and finally
came forward to offer his life for another prisoner, a married man condemned to death.
Saint Maximilian’s story is dramatic, his message is inspiring, and the production is simple yet
spectacular. In an amazing tour-de-force performance, Leonardo Difilippis creates a face-toface encounter with a saint who proved by his life that “hate is not creative; only love is creative.”
This performance comes to the Freed Theater at Christ Cathedral January 22-24, 2016. For

A pesar
misericordia a nuestros prójimos, debe marcar especialmente
profeta Miqueas hubiera podido hacerlo primero.
