THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING
Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs,
and so they endure from generation to generation.
The Russians have a
surprisingly bold one that fits
this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread
is the beginning of
everything.”
Judging from the first
reading, Elijah might have
felt that it was too late for
bread—too late for life itself.
This great prophet was at the
end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but
two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The
other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food
from the angels is bread for his journey. On the
strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to
the mountain of God.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just
as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself.
He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the
bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of
everything.

EL COMIENZO DE TODO
Todo el mundo reconoce la verdad de los buenos
proverbios, y por eso perduran de generación en
generación. Los rusos tienen uno
sorprendentemente audaz que le pega
al Evangelio de este domingo: “El pan
es el comienzo de todo”.
De acuerdo a la primera
lectura, puede ser que Elías sintiera
que era demasiado tarde para ser pan –
demasiado tarde para la vida misma.
Este gran profeta estaba ya al final de
sus fuerzas y de su aguante. Entonces
no uno, sino dos ángeles lo visitan. Uno le ofrece
comida y bebida. El otro le da unas sorprendentes
instrucciones. Para Elías esta comida de los ángeles
es pan para su camino. Fortalecido por este regalo
celestial de comida, él sigue su camino a la montaña
de Dios.
En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús se ofrece a sí
mismo, no sólo como pan para el camino, sino como
pan para la vida misma. Él da su carne para dar vida al
mundo. “Yo soy el pan de vida” (Juan 6:48). Él es el
comienzo de todo.

Our Lady of Guadalupe “The Silver Rose” to visit St. Mary’s
484 years ago in 1531 Our Lady began a series of apparitions to a peasant named Juan
Diego now named Saint Juan Diego. She appeared as our Lady of the Americas. Juan Diego was
instructed to go to the hill of Tepeyac and gather castilian roses and present them to the
archbishop as proof. When Juan Diego unfurled his tilma or cloak, before the archbishop the
roses fell to the floor and on the fabric was the miraculous image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
This is the only image of Our Lady like this in the world. As a result of this miracle millions of
conversions have taken place. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the
most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.
To commemorate this miraculous event silver smiths in Mexico have made 5 silver
roses, they are kept at the shrine in Mexico City beneath the image. Each year in July three of
the roses travel to Canada and the United States where they make stops at missions,
monasteries and churches. One of the roses will be coming through Washington, Oregon, and
into California and to St. Mary’s Church in Palmdale before being returned to the Basilica. The
Knights of Columbus from Canada, The United States and Mexico handle the arrangements.
This is a wonderful occasion for our parish to come together and give thanks to Our Lady for her many
apparitions over the years as she leads us to hers son. We are all encouraged to come and see the rose on her journey
through the Americas. Let us pray for peace in the world, the conversion of our own families, for vocations to the
priesthood and for rain to end California’s drought.
The Silver Rose will be at our Lady of the Desert Mission in Littlerock on Saturday evening
August 22 from 7p.m to 9p.m. and at St. Mary’s all day Sunday August 23rd. On Monday she will continue
her journey back to the Basilica in Mexico City.
“LA ROSA DE PLATA” DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE,
VISITA SANTA MARIA
Hace 484 años, en 1531, Nuestra Señora comenzó una serie de apariciones, a un
indio humilde llamado Juan Diego. Ella se apareció como Nuestra Señora de las
Américas. Juan Diego fue instruido por ella para ir a la cima del Tepeyac y recoger
rosas de castilla para presentarlas al Obispo como prueba. Cuando Juan Diego desplegó
su tilma delante del Obispo, las rosas cayeron al piso y en la tela apareció la milagrosa
imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Esta es la única imagen de Nuestra Señora como
aparece en el mundo. Como resultado de este milagro ocurrieron millones de
conversiones en el mundo. La Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la ciudad de
México es el lugar más visitado por peregrinos católicos en todo el mundo.
Para conmemorar este evento milagroso, en México se diseñaron 5 rosas de
plata que se conservan en la ciudad de México, cerca de la Imagen. Cada año en julio, tres de las rosas viajan a
Canadá y los Estados Unidos, donde hacen paradas en misiones e Iglesias. Una de esas rosas hará el recorrido
desde Washington, Oregón y por California y ahora por Palmdale, antes de regresar a la Basílica. Los
Caballeros de Colón de Canadá, Estados Unidos y México han hecho los arreglos para este evento.
Esta es una maravillosa ocasión para nuestra Parroquia de reunirnos y dar gracias a Nuestra Señora por
sus muchas apariciones a través de los años, para llevarnos hacia su Hijo. Todos estamos invitados a venir y
ver la rosa en su jornada por Las Américas. Oremos por la paz en el mundo, la conversión de nuestras
familias, por vocaciones al Sacerdocio y por la lluvia en California, que termine con la sequía que estamos
sufriendo.
La Rosa de Plata estará en la Misión de Nuestra Señora del Desierto, en Littlerock
el Sábado 22 de Agosto, por la tarde, de 7 P.M. a 9 P.M. y en Santa María el Domingo 23
de Agosto. El lunes continuará su jornada de regreso a la Basílica en la Ciudad de México.

Pool safety is about more than swimming
Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat
during the summer. Parents should teach their children about
swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching closely
to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about
when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the
restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when
they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is
okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any

The RCIA is the Catholic Church’s was of extending an invitation to those who wish to know more about the Catholic
Church.
RCIA is for…

communion in the Catholic Church.

those baptized Catholics who wish to complete their Sacraments
of initiation, Confirmation and Eucharist.
The first step in the process of RCIA is to attend an Inquiry class.
2015-2016 classes will begin on Sunday September 13, 2015 from
9:00am to 10:15am in the Holy Family Room (behind the church
adjacent to the hall). There is no need to pre-register. Information will
be collected and provided at this first meeting. We meet every Sunday
(exception holidays) and on some Tuesday evenings.

VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children™ Program
VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training
that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child abuse; how perpetrators
operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young people.

All clergy, paid parish/school personnel and volunteers who work regularly in a supervisory role with children or youth
must be fingerprinted. In the Parish we all work near children—All Saint Mary’s volunteers must be fingerprinted.
