Navidad Boricua a Froebel!

Brief History of Christmas
by Yamilka
The original meaning of Christmas is a special church
service, or mass, to celebrate the birth of Christ. The
stories of the Nativity, or the events surrounding the
birth of Jesus, are particularly important in religious celebrations of Christmas. However, many traditions that are
around today have their roots in pre-Christian winter
festivals. These include the importance of candles and
decorations made from evergreen bushes and tree, symbolizing everlasting light and life.
In Roman times, a mid-winter festival was held. This
was a relaxing time with a lot of parties and merry making. It was also common to give other people small gifts,
such as dolls for children and candles for adults. This
festival culminated with the celebration of the winter
solstice, which fell on December 25 in the Roman calendar. In Scandinavia, a festival called Yule and lasting up
to twelve days was held in late December and early
January. In this time people burnt logs and held parties.
These customs have influences how Christmas Day is
celebrated today in the United States. People celebrate
Christmas Day in many ways. In the days or even weeks
before Christmas Day, many people decorate their
homes and gardens with lights, Christmas trees and
much more. It is common to organize a special meal,
often consisting of turkey and a lot of other festive foods,
for family or friends and exchange gifts with them. Children, in particular, often receive a lot of gifts from their
parents and other relatives and the mythical figure Santa
Claus. This has led to Christmas Day becoming an increasingly commercialized holiday, with a lot of families
spending a large part of their income on gifts and food.

Meet! Mrs. Ivelisse Acevedo
By Nayalis Ro sa, Pa tri cia Fern ández & Gabrie la Qui les
Meet Ivelisse Acevedo Villanueva, you can
know her as the social worker or the librarian. She always lived in Aguada, Puerto
Rico. Mrs. Acevedo has her master's degree
in social working and a specialty in the
clinic area. She always wanted to be a social worker because her dad used to be a
social worker for about 30 years and her
oldest sister is also a social worker. It looks
like it runs from the blood!
Mrs. Acevedo had worked for 10 years as a
social worker and has been working at
Froebel for 7 years. She started working
when she was only 23 years old now she's
33 years old.
Mrs. Acevedo heard about Froebel by a
very good friend that even called her so
that Mrs. Acevedo could have the interview.
Mrs. Acevedo has two adorable children.
During her free time she likes to spend time
with her family, go out, and go to the mall.
She told us that when she started working
in Froebel the club was already established.
Before it became the Civic Club it was
known as the Counselor's Club. The kids of
this club prepares information to give presentations to different grade levels. Mrs.
Acevedo would never change anything of
her club because she likes it a lot.
She tells her kids at the club "To be successful you have to be disciplined, respect,
and focus in the good values." What an
excellent message for all to take in.
Mrs. Acevedo poses proudly at her
Club/Library/ Office.

Basketball News
By Mr. Soto
Three of Froebel Bilingual School's students were instrumental in San Sebastian's victory over Aguadilla in the PRIBO
National Basketball Tournament. Jan Carlos Lopez (forward),
Pedro Juarbe (center), and Hector (Tito) Nieves (point guard)
helped their team's effort to win the 2014 PRIBO (15 year old
category) championship, with no losses.
The tournament that included teams from all over Puerto Rico
took place between September 22 and November 9, 2014.
Under the leadership of Froebel Bilingual School's Efra Velez,
Pepino's team delivered a crushing defeat to Aguadilla's team
(48-39 points) in the tournament's final at the Raymond Dalmau Coliseum.
Froebel's charismatic Jan Carlos Lopez was the most valuable
player. Congratulations to our players and their coach in this
great victory.

According to a recent press conference
held by Marvel on October 28 of 2014,
there’s a bunch of great Marvel movies
coming up for the next 5 years. Next Summer (2015), there will be two Marvel movies, first is the new Avengers movie coming out on May, The Avengers: Age of
Ultron. The movie is about the Avengers
trying to stop the villainous Ultron for enacting his terrible plans. Ultron was a result of a Tony Stark’s peace-keeping program that went wrong. But you probably
knew all that, what you didn’t see coming
was the new Ant-Man movie coming on
July. The Ant-Man is armed with a supersuit and the astonishing ability to shrink in
scale but increase in strength.
There’s also a new Captain America movie
coming out in May of 2016, Captain
America: Civil War; cool, huh?
Something that a lot of people have been
talking about is the new movie: Doctor
Strange, coming out on November of
2016 and the new Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to be released on 2017. The first
movie of the Guardians of the Galaxy was
very good indeed, so if the first one was
good, the second one must be good too.
In 2017, the new Thor movie is coming
Page 4
out: Thor: Ragnarok, when Asgard is
threatened with Ragnarok, Thor must confront the gods. And yes, Loki will be back.
A character from Marvel that you probably
haven’t heard of is The Black Panther,
this movie is coming out on November of
2017.
Here’s something really, really cool that
you never saw coming, the third Avengers
movie!!!, The Avengers: Infinity War.
This third Avenger story will be so huge
that Marvel had to split it in two movies –
the first of which hits the theatres during
Summer of 2018 and part two on the following year, Summer of 2019. Also coming
in the Summer of 2018 is the anticipated
Captain Marvel film which will center on
Marvel character Carol Danvers, her powers include flight, a lot of strength, durability, and the ability to shoot energy
boosts from her hands. Marvel is also
bringing Inhumans into the mix of 2018.
The film will introduce dozens of characters all of whom have special powers. A
very exiting movie lineup coming from
Marvel from now until 2019.
