Second Sunday of Easter “Divine Mercy Sunday”
April 3, 2016
Pastor’s Corner
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY is another name or a title given by the Holy See
to the Second Sunday of Easter. This was first approved by the Holy See in 1995 for
the use of the Church in Poland. Subsequently, upon request, the Church in Russia and
the Church in the Philippines received a similar provision. Then, acceding to the wishes of the Christian faithful from all over the world, on April 30, 2000, Pope St. John
Paul II, declared that this “Second Sunday of Easter…” from now on throughout the
Church will also be called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” The Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in its decree issued on May 5, 2000
formalized this declaration and by its inclusion in the Roman Missal made it binding
throughout the universal Church.
What was Pope St. John Paul II’s and the Congregation’s reason for acceding to the wishes of the faithful and
giving the Second Sunday of Easter an addition designation “Divine Mercy Sunday?” The Christian faithful, according to
the decree, wished to praise the “merciful and gracious Lord (Ps.111:4), who, out of great love with which He loved us
(Eph.2:4) and out of unspeakable goodness, gave us His Only-begotten Son as our Redeemer, so that through the Death and
Resurrection of this Son He might open the way to eternal life for the human race, and that the adopted children who receive
His mercy within His temple might lift up His praise to the ends of the earth.” They also wished to “praise that Divine Mercy
in divine worship, particularly in the celebration of the Paschal Mystery, in which God’s loving kindness especially shines
forth.” By giving this additional designation to the last day of the Octave of Easter, the Pope St. John Paul II and the Congregation for the Divine Worship fulfilled the wishes of the Christian faithful, while at the same time safeguarding the true meaning
and import of Easter.
The original designation, Second Sunday of Easter, continues to proclaim, with all its splendor the Paschal Mystery of
Christ’s dying and rising, His victory over sin and death, and His gift of new and everlasting life. The added designation, Divine Mercy Sunday, points to the inscrutable mystery of God, the mystery of Divine Mercy. It unveils the truth that “the Paschal Mystery is the culmination of this revealing and effecting of Divine Mercy, and that the paschal Christ is the definitive incarnation of Mercy, its living sign….and its inexhaustible source” (John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia, 8,7).
Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, in his celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday on April 23, 2006, attested, not only to the
key significance of this Sunday’s celebration, but also to the unity of the Second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday
when he said: “On this Second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, may God’s blessing of reconciliation and peace be
with you all.” Summarizing Pope St. John Paul II’s understanding of the “mystery of God’s merciful love,” which was at the
“center of his Pontificate” and, in some way “summed up his Magisterium,” Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI underscored the importance of this message with unmistakable clarity: “the cult of Divine Mercy is not a secondary devotion but an integral dimension of a Christian’s faith and prayer.” (Marians of the Immaculate Conception 2007) not a secondary devotion but an
integral dimension of a Christian’s faith and prayer.” (Marians of the Immaculate Conception 2007)

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary Announced that in order “to ensure that the faithful would
observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence…so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of consolation of the Holy Spirit.
In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God’s pardon, they in
turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters.”
The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions: 1.) sacramental confession; 2.)Eucharistic Communion; 3.) Prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff, to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy
Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part
in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful
Jesus, I trust in you!). (USCCB Committee or the Liturgy)

Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like
your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12,
13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a
holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard
among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

You taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us
your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being
enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his
betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you
spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be
clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved,
and forgiven by God. Send Your Spirit And Consecrate Every One Of Us With Its
Anointing. So The Jubilee of Mercy May Be A Year Of Grace From The Lord.
And Your Church.
With Renewed Enthusiasm, May We Bring Your Good News To The Poor. Proclaim Liberty To Captives And The Oppressed, And Restore Sight To The Blind.
We Ask This Through The Intercession Of Mary, o Mercy, and You who lives
and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever Amen.
“A Time to Heal, to Help, to Forgive."
On a Sad Note: Former parishioner Bob Roy, 86 passed away from natural causes on March 18, 2016. There were no local services. Bob was laid to rest with his
wife in Massachusetts. Bob and his wife were parishioners when Fr. Don Coleman was pastor here. Their picture is seen in one of the older directories. They
had 2 children, Kathy and Tim. Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus
(4th. Degree Knight). After retiring, Bob volunteered his time tirelessly to
St. Stephen, the church he loved. Please keep Bob & Helen in your prayers.

2°Domingo de Pascua ~ “Domingo de la Divina Misericordia”
Abril 3, 2016
Posteriormente, a

con amor a esta porción de tu viña. Bendice la Diócesis de San Diego Bendito sea el Señor, porque él ha escuchado el sonido de mi escrito: "el Señor es mi fortaleza y mi escudo. En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda; a continuación, mi corazón exultante y con mi hijo le doy fuerza mi escudo . En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda;

buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;
siglos. Amén.
