Dear Sisters and Brothers,
The month of September is a time of
transition especially for families with
children. It is a time when some young
people leave home for the first time to
go to college, little ones start school for
the first time, and parents experience a
time of letting go. It is an opportune
time to focus on Bishop Ricken’s message during this second year of “Teach My People to
Pray” with a concentration on the home as a school of
prayer and love.
The Bishop wrote a letter to all of us on Pentecost Sunday regarding this focus in which he speaks of the home
as the domestic church. During the period between July
2015-July 2016, Bishop is asking us to foster prayer in the
home. A family becomes holy by praying together,
sharing faith, and loving one another. A family comes in
various forms. “Wherever two or three are gathered in
my name, there am I in the midst of them.” This beautiful
Scripture passage is a gentle reminder for all of us.
Regional meetings are being held throughout the
Diocese to assist parishes in supporting and nurturing the
families. During these meetings, the Bishop’s top 10
ways to build a household of prayer were shared:
1)Reflect on the Sunday Scriptures. 2) Attend the
Sunday Mass as a family. 3) Teach children the basic
prayers–Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary,
Glory Be. 4) Pray with and over those who live with
you. 5) Put religious symbols, statues, and images in
your home. 6) Volunteer together by serving those in
need. 7) Attend the Sacrament of Reconciliation
regularly. 8) Manage your schedules “to keep holy the
Lord’s Day” so that Sunday becomes a day to
strengthen and deepen your faith. 9) Speak of God
and Jesus with joy and certainty. 10) Celebrate holy
days with Mass and a special meal.
Parents as the primary educators are called especially to
set an example for their children. It may be impossible to
do all 10 items. As a family choose one or two items
from the list and concentrate on growing in love and faith
together.

promised to those who love him?”

What is more important—being rich in faith
or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that
possessions are most important. God teaches a
different lesson. When we are rich in faith we know
that material things really do not matter and we are
more willing to share what we have.
Lord, we pray by the example of
St. Joseph, to do the work you provide
us and earn the reward you promise,
Amen.

La colecta 2015, Formando Discípulos de Cristo, está ayudando a miles de personas con su apoyo a los muchos
ministerios y programas de la diócesis. Sinceramente se le
